A few of my most recent thrift finds
Ok so the lotr special editions (mint condition btw, all the papers were in them and not a scratch in sight) were at a goodwill that my friend and I went to and low and behold it was 50% pink tags that week so I got all 3 as a set for $10. The twilight extended edition DVDs were $1 that I found at my local thrift store. I love how large my collection is growing!! I LOVE dvd thrifting!! (I apologize if this is against the rules pls remove if it is)
DVDs on eBay
When one of the DVD results of the movie you are looking for in question displays "Located in the United States" despite being an NTSC ALL (Region 0) disc (like the one in the link above for example), does this mean that it is still an NTSC DVD movie created and made in the US/Japan all the same capable of working and playing anywhere else around the world?
An especially decent day at Disc Replay… the best is the very old school D&D dvd game… all for 2 for 1…
Ridiculous haul today that cost in total £8.50, the Godfather collection was £2.50 and the Kingdom of Heaven Directors cut £2, the rest were 5 DVDS for a £1 (X4). I need to back off from thrifting as space is now at a serious premium but I just love dropping on movies like this 😋
Let's Get Physical
My good friend decided that we need a webpage dedicated to requesting titles that were never released on Blu-Ray/4K or in a specific region. He plans on using this data to submit to distributors to see if he can get traction on them. Let's help him out:
tv series thrifting hunt

How can I start
I live in the Eu, specifically in Greece, I am interested on staring a DVD collection because I am frustrated when a piece of media that I love is pulled off a platform. Any advice where to start collecting DVDs or DVDs in Greek, the store's that I knew that sold DVDs have shut down
Goodbye streaming!
I decided to stop using streaming when I graduated high school a couple of weeks ago, they kept taking off my favorite movies for seemingly no reason to do so (ahem tubi taking off ALL the carries plus charlie bartlett) so I decided instead of streaming ill buy dvds and watch them,if im gonna pay for a movie I wanna be sure I actually own it,granted I still do use things such as youtube for videos or tiktok when im bored,I wont pretend ive completely closed up internet.ive only used streaming for one day and it was an hour or two to watch south park due to the fact that I dont have any south park dvds or such, south park was hated in my house and I wasnt allowed to watch it growing up haha.i personally think dvds are a gift from the man made earth although some of them can get expensive.
What on earth were Warner Bros smoking when they pressed this DVD?
In 2005, was actually released Feb '06, Warner Home Video in Australia finally released a DVD of all-time festive classic "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989).
But it was a 4:3 transfer!
Not only that, it was full scale, like 1.33:1!?
[Specs: NTSC - which was also weird as it's usually PAL here, Region 4, Australia, Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo, Colour, 97min, 4:3 Transfer / Regular / 1.85:1 - which is an error or maybe they mean its original aspect / "This film has been modified from its original version, it has been formatted to fit your screen", Special Features: Audio commentary with Randy Quaid and Beverly D'Angelo].
The peak of DVDs had already just passed, yet they still couldn't even find a way to give us a matted or 16:9 widescreen print of this not even mega blockbuster? After hundreds or thousands of movie releases over the 8 years prior!
So was this actually open matte, as shot? Or did they still pan & scan it? Apparently, as per VHS tapes, this movie you could indeed see extra vertical footage with the odd boom mic or dead space and edges of stuff not meant to be seen, as per trivia/goof webpages.
But yeah so bizarre. And just months or 1 year later they did release a 1.85:1 and 16.9 print, as part of a double peak with "Vegas Vacation". Like WTF. And a BluRay shortly after. Perhaps the source was different, obviously by mid-late 2000s a digital re-master and HD would've been required for TV broadcasters, HD DVD, BluRay, etc. So this DVD must've been from an older VHS or Laserdisc master? Wonder if they'll do a 4K restoration.
Dvd Covers?
I bought a lot of about 4000 dvds and some bluray from someone who previously owned a video rental store, so most of the dvds are in these clear plastic rental cases with numbers on them. The numbers have been helping in terms of trying to catalogue all the titles i have since i bought it as a lot with no specific titles known, but should I invest in other cases for the titles I plan to keep or sell? Is this too expensive of a mission or is there something else I should look into for these?
IT ARRIVED!!!
Also my bluray player broke so I gotta use the xbox
Weird dvd i bought
I found a rare dvd mickey mouse box at a flea market
It had a black stain and the dvd was scratched. I bought it for 20 bucks. And the seller gave me a free notebook. But when I opened the dvd it had a paper with a text and a drawing of a melty man with a one next to it the dvd also wasn't the actual dvd. It was just a burned dvd with a weird extra chapter with a lot of random audio peases and 1 video of a distorted mickey mouse chained up and a someone speaking a weird speech
update:the seller just called and want me to get his things for free should I accept the offer
Piranha (1978, Horror)
While attempting to track down two teens, a skip tracer (accompanied by her recluse guide) drains a containment pool, inadvertently releasing genetically altered piranha into a stream headed straight for a brand new summer resort.
Fairly decent Roger Corman production (I am a sucker for his movies). There is a funny moment where Dick Miller's character talks about "recycling" other resort's and theme park's attractions for his resort, an obvious in-joke, as Corman was notoriously cheap and reused sets and costumes from previous movies to save a buck. Directed by Joe Dante in one his earliest movies. 🦂🦂½
Was curious of others’ thoughts on my study of DVDs having artificial filters
It seems like 2005 was the most widespread time of utilizing HF-filtering and edge enhancement to reduce compression artifacts from being visible on DVDs coming out during a time that A. HDTVs were flying off shelves and B. there was no HD disc format yet. The biggest drawbacks to this were muted colors due to the HF-filtering and less-detailed details due to the edge enhancement, combined with a haloing effect to some degree. Overall a softer looking image to make clean compression easier to achieve. Without overscan, it is quite easy to see edge enhancement at the corners of an image even if you can’t see it in the details. Children’s titles are played constantly at my households, so Wandaba Style, The Cat Returns, The Incredibles, Swing Girls, Robots, and Madagascar were the noticable offenders in this study. Seeing movie footage in The Incredibles’ bonus features or watching the newer DVD of Cat Returns from GKIDS yields noticeably brighter colors and more detail, even without side-by-side. I know this might be pointless from a critical standpoint as all the animated films I listed can be replaced with clean unfiltered Blu-ray versions that are worth it no matter the DVD image, but I was wondering if anyone had any info or confirmation to pitch into this personal study. I could talk about how Swing Girls’ DTS DVD sounds way better than the near-field mixes on the Blu-ray releases, but that’s for another story.
Duel (1971, Action)
While traveling through the California desert, a meek businessman (Dennis Weaver) passes a semi on the road, igniting a road rage in the semi driver. The semi driver relentlessly plays a deadly game of cat and mouse with the businessman and only one will come out on top.
Thrilling and nerve-wracking all the way to the climax, the suspense is only added to by the fact the viewer (nor Weaver) ever gets to see the semi driver's face.
It also has a great musical score, at times borderline Psycho-esque and other times sounding like sounds you would hear while driving (railroad crossing signals, the THUMP-THUMP of a flat tire, etc.).
Originally a tv movie, this was directed by a young man named Steven Spielberg (I wonder if he ever made a name for himself 😉).
This is actually the European theatrical version, which runs a tad longer with some additional scenes. 🦂🦂🦂¼
DVDs on Panasonic Players
I own a UB820 and recently, I saw an old TV series that I wanted to re-watch but only in DVD. Has anyone experienced if there would be any possible improvements in watching DVD on panasonic bluray players? I am not expecting popping colors but will there be any "upscaling" happening if ever? To add context, I will be watching in a non-OLED 55" TV
My Bloody Valentine (1981, Horror)
20 years ago, the survivor of a mining cave-in terrorized the town of Valentine Bluffs. Now that the town is finally having another Valentine's Day dance, it seems the killer has returned to wreak more havoc.
I really wanted to like this movie, as all I had seen was the remake. But the acting was horrible and the movie itself just seemed "choppy" (no pun intended). This Canadian production tries hard, but the characters just weren't likeable at all, so there was no feeling as they got picked off. I don't even think seeing the unrated version, with some of the gore effects reinserted would make this movie any better. Disappointing. 🦂🦂
