Marketplace Apartments

I’m considering moving into Marketplace Apartments in downtown and wanted to hear from anyone who currently lives there or has lived there recently. I drove through downtown briefly and it seemed nicer than I expected, but obviously visiting and actually living somewhere are two different things. I'd be moving into a 1 bedroom with my dog and work 100% remote.

A few things I’m curious about:

  • How do you like living at Marketplace overall?
  • How much do utilities usually run monthly for a 1 bedroom? I know water is $50, pet rent is $30, approximately $50 for internet. Concerned about heat, electric, trash / sewer etc.
  • Is the building generally quiet / well managed?
  • How’s the parking situation with free unassigned parking? I am not interested in paying the $60 extra month to have covered parking.
  • For dog owners: where do you usually walk your dog nearby? Do you feel comfortable walking from 8AM - 8PM? I wouldn't be out any later than that when walking my dog.

Would appreciate any honest feedback. Thank you!

is Cafe Rhema struggling?

they keep their outside speakers on 24/7 playing an ad for the cafe, so is he down bad enough to just be blasting Rhema into the ether with hopes that people passing by in Buckham will wander in? what is the business strategy there?

Just curious ;-)

Local book clubs? Or chess clubs?

Hi I’m looking around for anyone interested in started a book club in flint or surrounding areas. Non restrictive, since work and life is a thing but I want to read with like minded people and or make friends locally in these types of circles.

I mostly read everything besides romance novels, and I’m a beginner in chess and want to improve my skills with someone in person who may be able to teach me further.
Not age restricted either but I’m in my mid twenties and hope to find others my age who are interested in these types of things instead of being chronically online (as ironic as this is XD) but I’m open to meeting new people and can hope to find others who may be wanting the same thing.

Thank you!

I’m considering a position at the Huntington Bank location in Downtown Flint. Is that a good area?

As the title says, I'm considering a position at the Huntington Bank location in Downtown Flint (Saginaw St), and I'm curious whether it's a “good” area. My parents and I both live in Grand Blanc, and when I asked my Dad about it, he made it out as if I'd be in Hood town USA

Is the Kettering area safe?

I made a new Reddit account for this because I don’t want people knowing where I live linked to my real one.

Anywho, I’ve lived in flint for nearly 30 years but have moved quite a bit due to schooling and whatnot, had to move back with family to finish college in my early 20s etc. I was living in a place over on the north end against my better judgment after spending most of my life afraid of going outside due to the growing drug problems in my parents neighborhood. My parents are a bit delusional about flint being “safe”, so they didn’t really warn me about how bad the north end would be. Nothing happened to the house I was renting because my roommate was a veteran who was armed and well respected in the neighborhood. But I swore after moving out of that place that I’d be willing to put safety above money if I could afford it, even just barely. I moved to a much nicer area after that, but my current landlord is selling the house so I have to leave.

I have looked at renting a nice house in the area that’s basically across the street from Kettering University. I drove around a bit and the neighborhood does look well kept. The landlord says all the neighbors are very kind people and it’s a safe neighborhood, but he’s a large man. I know it gets sketchier the closer you get to flushing road, but realistically how bad is the area close to Kettering? I want to be able to sit on the porch or take a stroll on a nice day and not have someone follow me to ask me for money, peer into my car windows, dig through my trash, bang on my door in the middle of the night asking for money, or hear random shots or dog fighting (all problems I’ve encountered in the past).

Edit: before anyone says anything nasty about my descriptions, I’m a young woman. It IS scary to be followed home by someone asking for money or to have your door pounded on at night for the same reason. Women spend the majority of their lives on high alert assessing threat levels, so you really won’t know what that fear is like if you’re a dude, thanks. I don’t want to be bothered by that fear in my new neighborhood, and that’s not crazy or offensive to say.

Advice on finding housing?

Hello new friends!

I just graduated from medical school and will be moving to the area for residency this summer. I am looking for a place to live, however I am unfamiliar with the area.

My hospital is near Grand Blanc, and the program is 4 years long. I have found a few decent-looking spots around there, but I much prefer cities to suburbs and just today found a couple promising places in (I think) East Village in Flint. So I'd like to learn more about what's good in Flint proper!

Basically looking for advice on whether East Village is a solid spot, which other neighborhoods I should check out, and whether buying is a good option. Most likely would have to move after residency for my next job depending on what's available and what I decide to do, however I am super tired of renting, and I really want a backyard for my dog and at least in GB there's nothing for rent with a yard.

Highest priorities for me are quiet area, close to a grocery store, max 25-min drive of hospital, walkable area or nearby parks to walk my dog...

Any advice is much appreciated! Looking forward to moving up and getting to know the area!

Condolences to the Tessmer family for their loss, and to the former and present staff of Soggy Bottom. Sucks to have such a vibrant and busy third space close here.

Grand Blanc LDS Church incident – discussion on local awareness and reporting

Has anyone in Genesee County been following the reporting on the Grand Blanc LDS Church incident?

I’ve noticed there’s been a lot of discussion and different versions of coverage circulating, and I’m curious how people locally feel about how it’s been reported and understood.

Not trying to push any specific source—just wondering what people in the area have been hearing and whether local reporting has felt accurate or complete.
