Online Couch Shopping - is it a bad idea?

Hi reddit! For the first time ever, I’m about to buy furniture (a couch) online without testing in person. My budget is lower than $800 so I’ve been browsing Amazon/Wayfair/HomeDepot.

I realize that this budget won’t get me the most comfortable everyday couch, but here is what I’m eyeballing currently: https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/latitude-run-seliana-8071-w-chenille-upholstered-square-arm-sofa-with-accent-pillows-w112163526.html?piid=1757350645 Seliana 80.71" W Chenille Upholstered Square Arm Sofa with Accent Pillows

I’ve read tons of horror stories about wayfair purchases, but have you all purchased from these cheaper sites before? How was your experience?

Thanks so much!

Where does price begin to exceed quality?

I am considering making a purchase from one of mid range retailers (west elm/crate & barrel, etc) and wanted to know if the price is justified by the quality compared with IKEA/Wayfair quality?

I’m sure there is a mark up for brand name, but I’m seeing solid wood construction from mid range retailers that and dont usually see that on Wayfair or Overstock.

I could be wrong though. Feel free to educate me.

Boneless couch

Hey all,

I currently live in a 2 bedroom apartment with my kids after being homeless for a bit, they have the bedrooms and I sleep on the couch. I gave them the rooms so they could have privacy but I need a comfortable couch that’s good to sleep on that’s not as hard as a rock. Several people have suggested boneless couches. I’m just curious. Are they really all they’re cracked up to be? I can’t spend thousands of dollars on a couch cause I’m trying to build savings back up. Any recommendations on this kind of couch? Or a good couch. Sleeper sofas are fairly expensive so I kinda pushed them to the wayside but I’ve seen some boneless couches for only a couple hundred dollars. But reviews are mixed

Living Spaces, Ashley’s, Rooms To Go

My budget will only allow me to purchase a sofa and loveseat from one of these 3 places, which would you recommend? Have you had a good experience with any of these places?

What piece of furniture in your home gets the most compliments from guests?

I’ve been slowly trying to make my home feel more put-together, but I don’t want to buy furniture just because it looks good in photos. I’m more interested in pieces that actually make a room feel warmer, more stylish, or more memorable when people visit.

For those of you who host friends or family, is there any piece of furniture that guests always seem to notice or compliment? It could be a sofa, dining table, accent chair, coffee table, bookshelf, entryway bench, or even something small that somehow changes the whole vibe of the room.

I’m curious what made it stand out — the design, color, material, comfort, or just how it fits the space?

Is there any bedfranes that resemble this drawing. I've been thinking about something like this for for a while. (Sorry if drawings aren't allowed!)

Sort of a loft with a flap to enter, and maybe a bed headboard with space to put curtains. Thank you!

Experience with murphy beds for full time use?

Trying to convince my partner to move into my small apartment (would save us about $15,000/year EACH) as opposed to renting a two bed/larger one bed, which go for about double what I'm paying where we live. He is fully remote, I WFH two days per week. My proposition is that with our delicious savings, we could get a pretty nice murphy bed with a desk component (for me) as well as some additional storage. He'd use my current set up in the living room and on the days I WFH we'd pull down the murph, and if he wants to blob on the bed during working hours Tues-Thurs, there'll be nobody stopping him.

I expect we'll stay in our current city for the next two years, so this isn't a rest-of-life decision. In my eyes, even if we only last a year because it's too horrible, we still come out on top.

Looking for people's experiences with murphy beds. Most I see are from folks who bring it down a couple times a year for holiday guests. Has anyone used one long term? Suggestions?

Sleeper sofa that’s a comfy couch

Hi all,
I got a one bedroom apartment with a living room on the smaller size (NYC) . I want to get a sleeper sofa for guest but one that’s comfy as a regular everyday couch. I was looking at the koala Byron sofa bed since it was a good size and I like how the mattress unfolds, but the reviews on Reddit were pretty negative. Anyone have any recommendations? I don’t want a boneless couch, I want some structure. Traditional sofa beds with the springs and metal bars, are okay if they are hidden very well and not too bulky/springy, and the couch itself is cozy and soft. I would like a queen size, 84”-92”ish. My max budget is 3k but 1,500 and less would be perfect. I shop online but if it’s a rec in person I would go to an outlet store.

Please help.

Couch with high back/head support - seeking recommendations

I’m looking for a modular or sectional sofa with an unusually high back (around 20–24 inches from the seat cushion to the top) so I can actually rest my head without needing loose pillows.

Most modern sectionals have backs that are way too low. I can’t stand sitting on a couch that only comes up to the middle of my back or just under my shoulders. I’m open to ordering online. Has anyone found one they love?

looking for a desk

Hi hi! I'm in the market for a desk- I love the shape/style of the one in the pic (I def want drawers and shelves and such) but I would love it in a darker wood (I've attached a photo!) Under $200 would be ideal, but I'm willing to go up to $300. Ideally somewhere that delivers to NYC easily (Amazon, ikea, etc)

Thanks in advance!!

Thinking about buying this bed online

I’ve been looking for a new bed frame for weeks and haven’t found anything I really like in local stores. Then I saw this bed on Z Gallerie’s site, and it’s pretty much the style I had in mind.

The problem is there aren’t any showrooms near me, so I can’t see the fabric or check how sturdy it feels in person. I’m a little nervous about ordering a big piece of furniture online, but I also haven’t found anything similar elsewhere.

Has anyone bought furniture from Z Gallerie recently? How was the quality, shipping, and overall experience?

If the feedback is decent, I think I might just order it online. Thanks in advance!

Storable Seating that isn’t a Camping Chair?

We regularly have large groups of people over at our house and just hang out in the living room. We always need to pull out extra chairs, which has typically been folding camping chairs. They have all broken and I’d like to replace them with something that feels a little more like a proper chair, but is still storable. We would need 4-6 probably.

Does anyone have recommendations for a seating option with a back, that would be comfortable for sitting a couple of hours, but is also easily storable? Maybe something that folds or stacks?

Our style is neutral transitional with some pops of color and a little boho thrown in.

Looking for solid wood couch

I'm trying to find a solid wood couch with removable cushions for our new living room setup. I found this one online at about $1,000, and I really love the look of it and the price point. The only problem is it takes 5-6 weeks for their furniture to get delivered as it's coming from China. Does anybody have any suggestions for a similar solid-made couch that can arrive sooner? Perhaps built in America? Staying around the $1,000 mark would be great, but I'm willing to pay more for lasting quality. I've looked all over Amazon and a few other furniture sites, but I have a hard time finding couches in this style. Can be online or at an actual store.

Location: Nashville, TN

Budget: $1,000-$2,000

Size: 3-seat with potentially a matching ottoman

Style: Solid wood with removable cushions

Looking for a durable, modular sectional with two 100lb+ dogs, kids on the way, and a future home build to plan around

(~$5-6k budget)

Hey everyone!

Looking for recommendations on a sectional and feeling a bit stuck, so hoping for some collective wisdom.

Our situation: We’re currently in a rented townhome but plan to build a custom home in the next couple of years. That makes buying a $5-6k couch feel risk.

Our must-haves:

  1. Durability above all. We have two dogs, both over 100 lbs, who shed constantly and treat the couch like a bed. Kids are also on the way, so this thing needs to be basically indestructible.

  2. Modularity / flexibility. Ideally something where we can reconfigure or add/remove pieces so it can adapt to a new floorplan down the road rather than becoming a very expensive problem.

  3. Comfort. If we’re dropping $5-6k on a couch, it needs to actually be comfortable. We’ve looked at Lovesac but have seen a lot of reviews mentioning they’re not as comfortable as you’d expect for the price, is that a common experience? Are there better options at this range that don’t sacrifice comfort for durability?

  4. Pet- and kid-friendly fabric. Easy to clean, resistant to scratching, and ideally doesn’t show hair.

What I’m wondering:
- Are there brands at this price point that genuinely hold up to heavy pet and family use, or should I be looking at a lower price tier until we’re in our permanent home?
- Is true modularity (where you can buy additional pieces later) actually a thing in this range, or is it mostly a marketing term?
 - Any fabric recommendations? I keep seeing performance velvet and solution-dyed acrylic mentioned… are those actually worth it over regular upholstery?

Thanks in advance. would love to hear from anyone who’s been in a similar situation, especially with big dogs!

Looking for Twin Corner Bed

I found this full corner bed, and I love the look of it, but I am looking for a twin bed instead of a full. If anybody can find a twin bed that looks like this in a black or dark brown color, that would be greatly appreciated.

I am located in South Jersey. I am available to spend up to $2,500, TWIN bed, the style shown in the picture. I have looked at Pottery Barn, Ikea, and the most common search results. I would prefer to order it online. Thanks!

Bookshelf with sliding glass doors

Hi, can anyone help me figure out how/where to look for a bookshelf with this design - https://imgur.com/a/yBv0qIP

Glass doors don't need to be separated, it can also be one glass per 2-3 shelves. I have this exact design in one of my china cabinets and I love it but I literally haven't been able to find anything remotely similar since (used or new). Is this design dead? Alternatively, if I were to buy a regular bookshelf, would I be able to bring it to a carpenter to have it modified to fit glass?

Any better value than Room & Board’s Metro Deep sectional?

Went to a R&B showroom a little bit ago, sat on all the sofas, me and my son both agreed that the Metro Deep was by far the most comfortable. Love it’s clean look, and seems like their stuff holds up pretty well too.

Before I commit to a whole sectional, was curious if there’s anything out there also worth looking at?

Sofas with similar look to the West Elm Harmony or Marin sofa?

Hello hello! Seeking help from anyone who can! I’m in the market for a new sofa. I love the look of both these WE sofas but they have bad reviews. I like the side lumbar pillows and the profile of both sofas. I’m working with a small space so a couch between 85”-93” would be ideal. I like off white sofas/neutrals so it’s easier to switch up decor.

In search of a particular kind of desk

I've been trying to comb the internet for this and it may not exist, but I'm trying to find an L-shaped desk that is pretty deep (like around 24" of work surface; currently have 20" and it feels too shallow to have room for both a computer and any analog work surface like a sketchbook/notebook) and also the space under the desk is not cluttered with "stuff" like built-in filing cabinets that would impede being able to put your chair there. I have found a lot of almost suitable desks but then the space at either end of the desk's length is taken up by a filing cabinet or something. I kind of need all that space to be able to sit in front of an excessive lineup of computers/monitors that serve varying purposes.

Does anyone own such a desk or know of a store that might sell varied enough desks to include something of this nature?

Location: US, DC area
Budget: Under $2,000 but if the answer is that a higher price point is needed to achieve this, I will consider that a valid answer even if I'm not ready to buy it
Size wanted: See diagram and fussy description
Style: It would be great to upgrade from particle board but otherwise I'm not picky
Where I have searched: Typing "L-shaped desk" into google and scrolling endlessly in the results but I didn't do a good job of tracking exactly what stores I looked at
Online or real store: Online but a real store is OK if they can deliver
