Indian sport is having a genuinely golden stretch across almost every discipline right now, worth taking a step back to appreciate how wide it's spread

Ayush Shetty just upset World No.1 and defending champion Shi Yuqi in the opening round of the BWF World Championships 2026, right after PV Sindhu won the Japan Open last month. Gukesh D is the reigning World Chess Champion, still just a teenager when he won it. Aman Sehrawat, Paris Olympics bronze medallist, just returned from the Asian Wrestling Championships with gold. Suraj Chand became the first Indian ever to win a FISU World University squash title. Chirag Yadav's spiking and defensive play helped India's volleyball team to a bronze medal in June.

At the Commonwealth Games, India delivered its best performance with 39 total medals alongside strong showings in boxing, judo, and weightlifting. Neeraj Chopra, Murali Sreeshankar, and Tejaswin Shankar all added to the athletics medal tally too, with Shankar becoming the first Indian ever to medal in the decathlon at a CWG.

What stands out isn't any single result, it's how spread out these wins are now. A few years back most of India's global medals came from a narrow set of sports. Now boxing, judo, chess, squash, volleyball, and athletics are all producing genuine world class results in the same window of months. Hope this depth actually translates into a bigger medal haul at the next Olympics, feels like the base has genuinely widened rather than just one or two athletes carrying everything.

Snippets from the nail-baiting final of the 2026 Royal Enfield Challenger’s Cup between Indian Army and Leh Kings

This was a final that had everyone holding its breath.

Tied at 5-5, deep into the third period, before Phuntsog Namgail found the net in the closing moments to seal it 6-5 and crown Indian Army Ice Hockey Team the first-ever Royal Enfield Challengers' Cup champions.

"Today's match was very challenging, we took a lot of penalties. But every player did play their roles well, including the goalie. As a captain I knew we wouldn't disappoint our fans and the spectators. We are very happy we won" says Tsewang Namgail as he reflects on the win.

With over 15,000+ fans cheering for their favourite teams across the tournament, Indian Army Ice Hockey Team and Leh Kings went goal for goal in the Challengers' Cup final.

Drawn from players who came up through the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League, Leh Kings edged out Central Ice Hockey Team ITBP to take their place in the final, a testament to the region's growing talent.

'Our first match was also against the Indian Army Ice Hockey Team, but at that time, we didn't have much planning, so we couldn't execute our game plan properly. But today, our team played very well. We had a clear plan, and we executed it really well" said the captain of Leh Kings Tsering Gyalpo.

Indian Army Ice Hockey Team's season, in numbers: 38 goals, with Jigmath Kunzang leading the charge with 8, and picking up Player of the Final for his efforts. Sonam Tsetan took home Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while Leh Kings' Tsering Angchuk was named Best Player of the Tournament.

why does cricket dominate Indian sports conversation so much compared to literally everywhere else in the world with multiple popular sports

not hating on cricket at all, just find it interesting how lopsided the attention is here compared to say the US or Europe where you've got 3-4 sports genuinely competing for mainstream attention

feel like hockey's literally India's most successful Olympic sport historically and still gets a fraction of the coverage cricket gets in an off season. same with badminton, kabaddi's actually got a solid domestic league too imo.or feel free to correct me if I'm wrong too

India Pull Out Of ASEAN Cup To Prioritise Brazil Friendly

India have withdrawn from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, opting to prioritise their high-profile international friendly against five-time world champions Brazil in October, All India Football Federation (AIFF) deputy secretary general M Satyanarayanan said on Thursday. India's withdrawal from the upcoming tournament also means they will miss the opportunity to face some of Southeast Asia's leading sides in a FIFA-sanctioned competition.

Why don’t Minerva play against bigger youth teams?

I know funding and logistics might be issues but with the way they have performed in youth tournaments what’s stopping them from matching up against bigger teams youth academies ( I don’t mean big academies like la masia etc but decent clubs in the 2nd or 3rd tier like Leicester and other lower division clubs? )Are tournaments like the gothic club really that low level that the winning squad isn’t even a challenge for these lower division teams?

Will Indian football ever get better?

This is not about questioning Bibiano Fernandes’ appointment or his credentials. It is about how a routine decision was allowed to spiral into confusion, reversals and public controversy.

The issue is not who got the job. It is what the process reveals about those running Indian football. How much more must Indian football lose before those running it are forced to answer?

Should Durand Cup be renamed to Manekshaw Cup ? Thoughts ?

I know football players won’t get suddenly developed after the renaming. But just had this thought as current Durand cup is named after a former British officer. Also since it’s like the oldest competition in Asia we wouldn’t want to scrap it. But then the thought of having it named after someone from army made sense and the first name I thought was of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw! What are your thoughts ?
