For those who recently upgraded or remodeled their kitchen, did your cookware choice change as well?

I’ve noticed a lot of modern kitchens now lean toward stainless steel, ceramic or cast iron cookware instead of traditional non-stick sets. Curious if your kitchen design, storage or cooking habits influenced what cookware you ended up using most.

Should Kitchen Appliances Match?

I’ve lived in my house for over 20 years. During that time various appliances fail and I just replace with whatever has a good recommendation on CR, matching finish (Stainless) and on sale. So right now they are a hodgepodge of different brands.

Now my fridge (Samsung-defroster shot), stove (Frigidaire - convection shot), and dishwasher (Maytag - trays corroded, not cleaning as well) need replacing.

Should I match all replacements with the same brand? Is there a downside if they don’t match?

[Academic] Survey for Countertops Ideas

Hello everyone! I'm hear to do an academic reasearch on a potential idea for my intro to research class. I am surveying people who are considering getting a special countertop that I came up with. This idea is for my class project which may later be developped into a real product. There are a total of 11 questions in this survey and will aproximately take 2-3 minutes.

Thank you for considering to take my survey!

Help deciding on surface for rolling kitchen island

As the description mentions, I am looking to buy a rolling kitchen island for my home. I have gotten to the final step of deciding the finishes of the counter top and ai can decide between faux marble and MDF. My main concern is over the durability of the materials, I want this island for a while and don’t want it to look like crap in two years. Any and all advice or knowledge is appreciated!

i think memorial day dishwasher deals might finally be the push i needed to replace ours

the dry cycle stopped working about 3 months ago tho it still washes fine so we never got around to replacing it. we just open the door after and let everything air dry on the racks. we been loosely watching prices for a few months but never felt urgent enough to commit. now that memorial day deals are actually live and the discount on a few models we were looking at is hard to ignore.

a little torn because it still technically runs but at some point technically works stops being a good enough reason to keep something.

What is one kitchen upgrade that actually made cooking easier for you?

I’m planning some small improvements in my kitchen and wanted to know what changes genuinely helped you in daily use. It could be better lighting, drawer storage, cabinet layout, built-in appliances or anything else that made your kitchen more practical and comfortable to work in.

Vent hood conundrum

Just bought a 1950's home with some interesting DIY things. One that i'm curious about is this vent fan. I'm likely making this more complicated in my head.

This old kenmore vent hood is

  1. greasy as all heck

  2. the sliding buttons arent functional with the panel on

  3. 42 inches long where as my stove is only 30 in.

What would be a simple solution aside from just leaving it alone for now? I know- buy a new hood. But! Its installed in the center... a smaller one will reasonably not take up all this space but will have to stay in the middle therefore looking weird. If you cant tell, the last owner also used the counter top laminate material as some sort of oven backsplash, so thats another space/wall consideration as it goes up to the hood. It's all a little funny.

Thoughts?

Custome fabricated titanium granite slab (2’x5’) on a custom build rolling red oak kitchen island. Would you consider this luxury and what would you guess it’s worth

Kitchen/entrance brainstorm

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to buy a new build. I have a lot of plans for the place but planning the kitchen proved difficult. It's right at the entrance so it needs to be functional for both entrance & kitchen but also, because I cook a lot, be a little bigger than what's on the current plan. I like a kitchen island to have more space to cook but also to dine but here I'm a bit confused where it should go, since everything I can imagine blocks the storage that's going to contain coats, shoes, etc.

Note: it's a two-rooms so I'd rather maximize storage...

Does anyone have a great idea that could help me get started up with planning this kitchen/entrance space ?

Please note the plan is made to represent where the kitchen appliances' outlets and pipes are going to be but there won't be any appliances when I get it so I can move things around!

Thanks a lot 🌞

Help me decide between Mountain Danby Marble and Leathered Black Granite

Trying to decide if I should do the perimeter of the kitchen counters in a black leathered granite instead of the Mountain Danby Marble used on the island and backsplash.

The granite will wear better, is less expensive and is more visually interesting. The marble is my original vision and looks great but is more prone to damage.

Just visually, which do you think looks better? Taking everything into account what would you do?

Please don't tell me not to do white cabinets or marble at all. These are timeless colors and materials. I'm not chasing trends.

Sanity check: shaker cabinets

I’m getting cold feet about my shaker cabinet order that will be placed tomorrow. My house is a colonial, so shaker makes sense. What I wanted was shaker uppers and slab lowers, because all I can think about are the agonies of cleaning shaker lowers. However, due to major unforeseen expenses, my cabinet budget has been slashed. My best quality-for-value option with the fastest lead time (we are currently displaced from the house) doesn’t have slab options.

Will I regret going with shaker lowers if it sets me up for years of struggling to keep them clean from drips and spills? Is there some sort of hack to make cleaning shakers easier? Any and all advice appreciated.

pinterest vs modern kitchen

My Pinterest inspiration comes from kitchens with white wooden cabinets, a wooden countertop, hardwood floors, and maybe red tiles on the walls… But unfortunately, I have to rent a modern apartment (I’m very lucky to have such a big and clean apartment, it’s just not my ideal style !). Any ideas for making this kitchen feel cozier and more Pinterest-friendly? :)

Help designing house

So I want to make my house in a plot 8x20 it’s small but I want to build a nice house just for myself and my cat any ideas on what to do? I want a lot of light and a kitchen with a pink marble like island, it doesn’t have to be marble just the pattern and 2 stories, I want the first one kitchen, living room, dining room pantry and laundry area, second 3 rooms, 1 walking closet. In the first floor room for my car and an entry for the back patio so people won’t have to go in the house to be able to get to the patio, what do you guys suggest?

Edit: I'm mainly looking for advice on what to do and what to avoid, like check where the sun arrives and sets, this type of floors don't last, sinks this size work better, ceramic vs marble is better and stuff like that

Which kitchen layout do you prefer? I don’t like walking into the kitchen so that’s my biggest drawback here. The kit

So first kitchen is tearing down the wall at the front door entrance and opening up the kitchen to formal living room. But that means I’d be walking into the kitchen when you open the front door. Upside is having a kitchen island. The second option is keeping the wall up so you enter the house with just the formal living room in view along with the hall to the rooms and then once you turn you enter the kitchen and it will be a U shape kitchen. The Ushape kitchen is also quite large (not as small as the first rendering with open layout). It will be 137 inches from wall to wall in the kitchen. So more privacy but no kitchen island.

If you were redesigning your kitchen today, what’s one thing you would absolutely do differently?

Could be adding more counter space, better storage, bigger drawers, improved lighting or choosing different materials and cookware. Looking back, most people realize there’s always that one change that would have made everyday cooking much easier. Curious to hear what you would change and why.
