jackson hewitt and turbotax getting sued for charging military members illegal fees on refund loans

jackson hewitt and turbotax getting sued for charging military members illegal fees on refund loans

two class actions just filed. MLA caps military APR at 36% on credit products, fees included. both companies allegedly pushed refund advance loans way past that cap and forced service members to sign arbitration waivers as a condition. no settlement yet, still at complaint stage. if certified, the class covers any active duty member or covered dependent who took a refund advance from either company. worth saving if you or a family member used either for refund advances. MLA carries statutory damages so payouts can be real.

Lakeview Loan Servicing $26M data breach settlement closes June 22, up to $5K

Got the breach notice from Lakeview back in 2022 and completely forgot about it until I saw the settlement listed on classaction.org last night. Posting in case anyone else missed the deadline reminder.

Quick rundown:

Lakeview Loan Servicing (the second largest mortgage servicer in the US) had a data breach in October 2021 that exposed Social Security numbers, loan numbers, and other personal identifiers. The class action just settled for $26 million.

If you received a breach notice from them, you qualify. Two payout options:

Up to $5,000 if you can document out-of-pocket losses (identity theft costs, credit monitoring you paid for, miscellaneous expenses, plus up to 2 hours of lost time at $20/hour).A pro rata cash payment from whatever is left of the fund. No proof required for this one.

California residents get an additional pro rata payment under the CCPA on top of either tier. Everyone in the class also gets one year of free credit monitoring included.

Filing deadline is June 22, 2026. The claim form is on the KSACMS settlement portal (the official administrator).

Mortgage servicers send so much paper that most people probably tossed the notice in 2022. Worth digging through old mail if you had a loan with them.

Quick validation question for privacy/compliance folks.

Hey everyone, I'm an indie developer working on something in the privacy compliance space and wanted to get some honest input from people who deal with this stuff.

I'm trying to prove what tracking technologies fired on a site before and after a user consented specifically in the context of audits, compliance reviews, or litigation support.

A few questions if you have 2 minutes:

  1. When you need to document pre-consent tracking behavior, what does your current process look like?

  2. Do you use tools like Page Vault or TrueScreen? If yes, is there anything they don't capture that you wish they did?

  3. Who in your workflow actually runs the technical audit you, the attorney, or someone else?

  4. If a tool gave you a full network-level log of what fired before consent formatted as a ready-to-use annex for a demand letter or compliance report would that be something you'd pay for on its own, or only as part of a bigger platform?

  5. What do you wish exists that helps make you life easier?

Even a one-line answer to any of these is genuinely useful. Many thanks.

how to actually keep track of class action settlements and file claims (the lazy version)

been doing this for a couple years now and these are the only things that have actually worked for me. ignore the rest.

  1. follow a few subs that post settlements daily

these are the ones i actually check:

  • r/lawsuitmoney
  • r/ClassActionSettlement
  • r/classactions
  • r/personalfinance (occasional posts)
  • r/Frugal (also occasional)
  • r/povertyfinance (small payouts are more relevant here)

set them to push or email notifications and you basically never miss one.

  1. use a tracker, dont try to remember dates

some options:

  • claimmoney.com
  • classaction.org
  • topclassactions.com (newsletter is solid)
  • openclassactions.com
  • consumer-action.org (older, less polished)

use one or two, dont stack all of them or youll get duplicate emails for the same case.

  1. tag your inbox

every settlement admin sends from a different address (kroll, verita, epiq, angeion). make a gmail filter that tags anything containing "class action", "settlement", or "claim" into one label. checking that one label once a week is faster than parsing your whole inbox.

  1. file the no-proof ones immediately

most settlements have a default tier where you check a box, certify under penalty of perjury, and get a small flat payout (usually $20 to $100). these take 2 minutes. file them the day you get the notice.

  1. for proof-required tiers, batch them

save receipts, screenshots, and bank statements as you go in a single folder. when a settlement asks for documentation you already have it. dont try to dig back 4 years after the fact, you will give up.

  1. dont file if you dont qualify

every claim is signed under penalty of perjury. submitting fraudulent claims dilutes the fund for people who actually qualified. read the eligibility section first.

half of this is just setting up the pipes once and letting it run.

wrong number robocalls to your cell can be worth $500-$1,500 per call under the tcpa

If you’ve been getting recorded voicemails or robocalls meant for someone else, the TCPA says you can recover $500 to $1,500 per call. Each one. It’s a federal law, not a state thing.

This happens a lot when you get a new cell number because the previous owner had accounts with banks or debt collectors and they never updated the file. It also happens when a company simply has the wrong number listed for a customer.

Either way, automated calls to a cell phone without your consent are illegal. The list of companies that have already paid out on this is long. Wells Fargo, Navient, JPMorgan Chase, Synchrony, Adobe, Cox. Attorneys are actively taking new cases.

how do class action lawsuits actually work, and why do these payouts even happen

new to this sub. ive been seeing posts about people getting checks from random settlements like sony headphones, bank fees, and data breaches, and im trying to understand the mechanics.

how does it work start to finish? who decides theres a case, how does the company end up paying, why do they pay if they didnt admit anything, and why are some payouts $14 while others are $1,500?

also is there a downside to filing claims you might be eligible for? im not seeing one but it feels too easy.

Sharing a tool ive been using to auto-file class actions

Not selling anything, just figured I’d share.

I’m pretty lazy and I’ve still been pulling money from class actions the last few months because I started using ClaimMoney You sign up once and it scans open settlements you’re eligible for and files the paperwork for you. You don’t chase deadlines or fill out forms one by one anymore. It’s $50/year, so not free, but I’ve made that back many times over already. No pressure to try it. Just sharing in case anyone here is sitting on payouts they haven’t bothered to file for.

Active lawsuit against sony for the wh-1000xm5 hinge defect

There’s an active class action against Sony for the WH-1000XM5 headphones snapping at the hinge. The plastic in the swivel mechanism cracks under normal use, and the earcup ends up detaching from the headband.

The complaint says Sony has been denying warranty claims by calling it “physical damage” and quoting people roughly half the headphone price for a repair.

I’ve seen this exact issue on the Sony sub a bunch of times, so it’s not just a couple of unlucky people.

If yours broke at the hinge, you can submit info. They’re still gathering plaintiffs. The firm running it is Migliaccio and Rathod out of DC.

social casino apps (zula, jackpota, playtika) are facing mass arbitration, lost money in the last 2 years counts

A growing number of “social casino” apps are facing mass arbitration claims over allegations that they operate as unlicensed gambling platforms while presenting themselves as free-to-play games. The lawsuits argue that these apps encourage users to spend real money on virtual coins, chips, or credits that function similarly to gambling wagers.

Apps currently involved in these claims include Zula Casino, Jackpota, and several games published by Playtika, including Slotomania, House of Fun, Caesars Slots, Bingo Blitz, and World Series of Poker. Consumers who spent money on virtual currency or in-game credits within the past two years may qualify to participate, depending on state laws and eligibility requirements.

Eligibility generally requires users to be at least 18 years old and to have experienced real financial losses on the platforms. Some states handle these claims differently, with California following its own legal track. Participants usually complete a short signup form through the law firms managing the cases.

The cases are being pursued through mass arbitration rather than a traditional class action. Each claimant files individually while attorneys bundle the claims together. Most firms involved work on contingency, meaning there are typically no upfront legal costs or filing fees unless compensation is recovered.

These claims are based on legal theories that have already produced major settlements in similar cases. Big Fish Casino agreed to a $155 million settlement in 2020 over related allegations involving virtual casino mechanics. Playtika has also faced and settled multiple state-level disputes over similar issues in recent years, which has increased attention on the current wave of arbitration claims.
