Finally got ahold of a dream kit. Floor model. Came with the Spur-Lock, Speed King and snare stand. I finally feel complete! If any other Ludwig fanatics have info about the penciled initials inside the bass and floor tom, I’d love to know more!

Supraphonic w/ Internal Muffling?

When did Ludwig stopping putting internal muffling on the LM400? I’m in the market for a used Supraphonic and the pictures of one from the 70s (based on having the Ludwig “pointy” badge) show an internal muffler. Good/bad? I like having an internal muffler, but Ludwig must have had some reason for removing it, unless it was just an expense-saving move. I suppose that it’s possible that the internal muffler was added, but I’m not brave enough to drill into a metal shell.

Ludwig Reissue Stainless Steel vs Vistalites

I'm considering a new set of drums after playing on a Gretsch Renown for a decade. I've always liked the Renowns but have honestly never loved them. I've briefly played acrylic drums before and I've seen many bands at bigger venues all the way down to house shows playing Vistalites (or other acrylic shells) and I've always loved the way they sound from out in front in a live context. They project very well and have such great attack. I also love the sound (on records and live) of stainless steel drums. Vistalites are more of a tossup on recordings. Sometimes they sound really full, sometimes they come across more "plasticky" to my ears (but I have just as much critique with the sound of wood kits, so part of that is engineering). I'm considering picking up the Pro Beat reissue (24/13/16, same sizes I play now) of either one, but I haven't actually played a stainless kit before.

I have a 14x8 Ludwig Black Beauty and I absolutely love it. Great feel, great sound both behind the kit and out in front, and it records very well, so I'd like to stick with Ludwig. Can anyone compare Vistalites to SS? I'm curious about feel, projection, and any recording experiences. I'm able to swing a new kit at this point, so I'm not really interested in a used 70s model since this would be something I'd be touring, recording, and playing out with a fair amount and I don't have much time to do the extra care vintage gear sometimes requires.

1958 WFL Oyster Blue Pearl 5.5x14 (and kit)

Snare is 1958 WFL. The kit is 1963. For the wraps to be 5 years apart they match really well. Hardly any fade.

CHROME OVER VISTALITE

I have a VERY RARE 1970s 12-piece Ludwig Octa-Plus "Chrome over Vistalite" which I had to wait a long time to get. (22 and 24" double bass). My lead guitarist worked at a music store not far from the Ludwig factory (and his wife-to-be worked there). Anyway, we ordered this kit in solid chrome and Ludwig almost immediately put a hold on it. Apparently, chroming the Vistalite directly worked beautifully, but when they were played, the chrome cracked terribly. The delay was for R & D to fix the issue, and the kit I finally received has a steel band around each Vistalite drum to which the chrome is bonded. Looks fantastic when polished and played with my Avedis Zildjian Brilliant cymbals and the lights hit it!

I suffered a spinal cord injury and wondered if anyone might be interested in this magnificent kit?

Real or Fake Vintage Ludwig Tom?

Hey everyone, I’ve been looking for a 14” tom and bought this one as soon as I found it.

It’s titled as “vintage 14” tom”, has some pictures, including closeups of the badge. From what I’ve gathered, this type of badge is considered the “pointy” badge, indicating somewhere around the 70’s. I also saw another subreddit that indicated this serial number should be from about ‘78 or ‘79 (don’t know how accurate this could be). Also, it looks to me to be a 14”x10” rack tom. The lugs and hoop (the only that remains) also look accurate. My concerns:

- the wrap looks weird, I think? It’s kind of like a black oyster pearl, but a little “too” black? I actually found an ad for a similar kit, whose wrap looks similar and it says it’s a 70s Ludwig, but who knows (link in the end)

- the wing screw has two spheres on it and the part doesn’t say “Ludwig”, like in other kits I saw

- from what I’ve seen in other kits, there should be two large circular metal parts, that I don’t seem to find in this one (although it isn’t possible to see the complete interior)

Would love some opinions on what the hell I just bought. Real? Fake? What model? Year? Anything. Thank you!

Similar (?) wrap on another kit: https://www.drugansdrums.com/products/1970s-ludwig-drum-set-oyster-black-pearl-24-13-16-18?srsltid=AfmBOopb2VuSQGCKR94pJKMNL2CtDgYQcDp7W\_SHzWb9RnyABiacJd8l

Here’s what I meant by ‘near perfect’:

In reference to my other post about this ‘67 downbeat kit listed at $1700.
What do you guys think?

Should I ask for more pictures?
Thanks
