Restaurant recommendations that accept reservations

Hi everyone, I’ll be traveling to MV with my mom and 8 year old daughter from July 5th-9th. We’re staying in Edgartown. Can anyone recommend some recommendations that accept reservations this time of year? Open to any budget. Not many constraints of cuisine; my daughter is a pretty adventurous eater but we don’t anything extremely fine dining. Really just searching for great food/drinks, good ambiance and ideally something in Edgartown for the first night since we’ll have a long travel day.

Thanks in advance!

Day Trip Recommendations

My boyfriend and I (mostly me) are planning a weekend roadtrip to cape cod this summer.

We plan on doing a day trip to MV, taking the ferry from Wood Hole, renting a bike and exploring the island. This is both of our first time so I’d love recommendations on what to do and where to go.

I love going to the beach but I’ve been reading that a lot of the beaches on MV are private so we’ll probably beach in cape cod.

I really want to grab dinner at 19 raw but unfortunately they don’t take reservations. Any tips on eating here?

Also who has the best lobster rolls on the island? Is anyone serving them hot?

Our budget for the day is around $500. We are open to any recommendations to say we truly visited Martha’s Vineyard

Am I the only one who thinks the Mexican food on MV is awful?

Every Mexican place on the island is just so bland... Dos Mas is gone but their burrito was a bland brick. Same thing with El Barco, La Choza, Sharky's. BLAND! It's like they don't use any seasoning. I'm a 29 year old white man who is bad at cooking but even I know you need to put spices on the chicken and vegetables, maybe some cilantro in the rice, what's hard to understand? With restaurants here I always have to douse it in hot sauce and that helps a bit but not by much.

Putting aside burritos, are there any particular menu item from a Mexican place on the island I should try that is decent?

Seeking Swim Instructor

I posted before re: a swim instructor for private lessons while we’re vacationing this summer & a few folks suggested I reach out to the Y. I did but all they can do is tell me about private lessons AT the Y — they can’t share my info with employees looking to do lessons on the side. (Which, sure, get it.)

SO — if folks have any leads on someone or suggestions of where to “advertise,” let me know. I live elsewhere, so I can’t throw a flyer up somewhere. 2 summers ago I found someone word of mouth via this forum, but unfortunately that person is no longer doing lessons.

- Seeking swim instructor for 8YO

- Needs to have experience instructing kids

- 8YO can swim, looking to strengthen skills & confidence

- 3-4 lessons during July 20-30

- Held in the morning, at the house we’re renting (located near the airport)

- Can pay cash or Venmo

TIA!

I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

Recs on how to keep dogs safe from ticks?

Been coming to the island for years and have always managed all natural tick control for our dog (who has had negative reactions to both sorresta and nexguard - we won't try other meds at this point for her safety). Any Islanders out there that have tried and true methods of keeping ticks off the dogs? I know that the alpha-gal does not affect dogs like it does people, but I want to mitigate the risk of them jumping from the dogs to the humans. Currently using a peppermint collar and all natural flea and tick spray (made of various essential oils). this works pretty well in general, but anyone know any other tricks?

Thanks in advance

USA Soccer Game

Im going to be in MV for the USA vs Paraguay soccer game. Does anyone know a place to watch it, preferably in oak bluffs? It could be a bar or just a public showing

Is TICK eradication possible on MV

The attached article about the screwworm epidemic mentions an effective eradication technique where Millions of sterile male flies are released to mate with females. As the flies only mate once in their lifetime, like ticks, this causes the population to plummet to near zero.

The introduction of the new male ticks wouldn’t increase disease transfer because male ticks do not transfer diseases, it's all the females.

I’d love to see them try this with ticks and MV, being an island seems like the perfect place.

Worcester to Woods Hole?

Hi MV community! My parents live year round in Martha's Vineyard and I visit every summer. I live on the west coast now but went to college in Worcester. I typically fly into Boston, take the train to Worcester, spend a few days in Worcester with my friends, and then make my way to Woods Hole to spend a week with my family.

Getting from Worcester to Woods Hole is always extremely frustrating. Occasionally I can find a friend who wants to visit, so they can drive me. But otherwise it's a train into Boston and then a bus to Woods Hole. Are there any alternatives that I'm missing? Is there still nothing that connects Worcester directly to a port?

I'm on a budget but trying to find the balance between what my time is worth and what I'm willing to pay. For example, I'd be willing to splurge on a hi-speed ferry ticket if there was a bus directly from Worcester to a different port than Woods Hole.

An uber would be $200-300... at that point should I just rent a car for the day? Any tips to do this cheaply?

My parents drive their cars on- and off-island whenever they leave so they know nothing about transportation options. Really hoping some natives can help me see what I'm missing here 🙏

Few questions, here for min 3 months.

Hi everyone! Healthcare worker, working at the hospital, on the island for minimum 3 months and I have a few questions.

  1. What's the quietest beach to go too? (I know it's a long shot that it will be quiet during the summer, but definitely would like quieter 🤣)

  2. What time do you need to get to the beach to be able to get parking?

  3. What's the best carwash for a SUV? Where I am staying the driveway is under trees, and on a dirt road and my blue is now yellow.

  4. Any other suggestions on things to see or avoid would be appreciated. 🙂
    Thank you!!!

I was wildly impressed with the jerk chicken from Winston’s Kitchen. Still thinking about it days later. What are some other “hidden gems” on the island?

Just finished this new series capturing Cape Poge and the Wasque trail.

I wanted to capture that classic, isolated atmosphere we all know so well out here—especially the light hitting Cape Poge Lighthouse and the mood along the trail at Wasque. There is just something about the coast on this side of Chappy that you can't find anywhere else.

I’ve been focusing heavily on maritime and coastal landscapes lately, but these specific spots are always some of my absolute favorites to bring to life. Thought this group might appreciate the views!

(The original canvases and archival prints are available if anyone is looking to add a piece of Chappy to their collection—just shoot me a message!)

Any cool places and/or dirt roads for a motorcycle ride?

My father takes an annual trip to Chappy for a week of fishing. This year I'm going to meet him out there for a few days and decided to take my motorcycle on the ferry rather than my truck. I want to spend a few hours riding around the island before heading to Chappy. Are there any cool roads or places where I can ride a little dirt while on the island? I have a dualsport which is a kind of bike essentially like a friendlier, quiet, street-legal dirt bike with lights etc. etc.

Any suggestions for cool places to visit along the ride would be awesome too. Thanks!

Chappaquiddick Island Visit on Foot

I’m wanting to see the Cape Poge Lighthouse, but my husband and I will be traveling via foot. Is there a way to make it to the area? Is the island worth visiting AT ALL on foot?

Looking for adventure and community?

I'm an undergrad living on the island this summer doing wildlife research! I'd love to find people to share in some adventures. Not looking for anything fancy — just genuine people who like being outside, trying new things, and making the most of this island.

Here's some ideas I have:

-Water (kayaking, swimming, skimboarding, surfing, boating, snorkling)

-Land (running, hiking, biking, rock climbing, birdwatching, tracking, fire pits, music, camping, tree climbing)

Drop a comment if any of this sounds like your kind of summer! All experience levels welcome. Looking to share resources, knowledge, and experience. Please add your own ideas and suggestions!
