Shout out to The Academy series by TZ Layton

My 10 year old loves playing soccer but doesn’t so much love reading (chip off the old block, I’m afraid). This series has been so good for him. Really solid soccer story that’s 50% about the game and 50% about life lessons. Highly recommend for probably 8-12 year olds (I read some to him and he comprehends it all but might be a bit challenging for less strong readers to read on their own at 10)

What time is the actual illumination itself at Illumination Night?

I know the singing etc starts earlier but anyone know what time they flip the lights on?

New club team’s roster is pretty thin…how does this usually get resolved?

My son (U11) recently joined the A team of a new club (large club with regional teams. His local region has an A and B team in his age group). Only 11 on the roster (they play 9v9) and it looks like they won’t have numbers to field a team for the first tourney they’re in. 7 or so can make the initial tourney. Generally, a smallish roster seems great to me - lots of playing time! But I’m concerned that with kids at that age, they’ll have kids missing games for various reasons and will continue to struggle to have enough.

Does this sort of thing usually work itself out, or should we be thinking about trying to move him to a new club if this will be an ongoing issue?

Grabbing B team players to fill in won’t work as their playing in the same tourney with time conflicts.

(Forgive if it’s a silly question - I’m new to this. Perhaps I’m overthinking this (again, new world for me). I just can envision how bummed
My kid will be if they’re forfeiting games bc they can’t get players after being excited to land where he did…).

Free tonight (Tues 11th August), Fulham supporters? If so, you please come on over to Hanwell Town!

Hi all,

I'm writing from Hanwell Town FC. Thanks to the mods for letting me do this!

We’re a Step 3 non-league club in West London, and I wanted to invite you to check us out and, if you have a good time, think about making Hanwell your "second club."

For those who haven't been into non-league, it’s a very different experience from the Premier League. You can have a pint right by the pitch, bring your dog, talk to people around the ground (it's a famously friendly group at Hanwell), say hello to the players after the match, and - at Hanwell Town - even get a Bush Pie & Mash from the double-decker bus-turned-cafe pared on the sideline.

What we're NOT asking is for anyone to give up Fulham. We’d just love to be the place you come when Fulham aren’t playing and you still want to see a match, or just to think of it as a place to unwind for very little money when you'd rather be watching football in person than on a screen.

If you have a Fulham season ticket — or one for any Premier League or EFL club — a Hanwell season pass is £100 for the season, which works out to roughly £5 per home league game.

If you're free, tonight (Tuesday 11th August) is a good time to give us a try. Our first home league match of the season is against Basingstoke Town, with a 7:45pm kickoff. You can buy tickets online, or at the gate.

The location is Oliver Connell & Son Community Stadium Reynolds Field, Hanwell, UB6 8TL. It's accessible by car or tube (the closest tube is Perivale on the Central line, about a 10-minute walk)

If you want general info, you can check the club out over at hanwelltown.com (bonus: we just launched a third kit collab with Rocky Horror! The shirts are very wild and very fun, and you can see those on the site, too).

In additional to the standard socials, we also have a subreddit, r/hanwelltown if you want regular updates.

Hope to see you over there!

Brentford away? Come watch Hanwell Town play. Home opener tomorrow (Tuesday) night!

When Brentford are away — or you’ve got a slow Tuesday night and fancy watching some football — come down to Hanwell Town.

We play Step 3 non-league football in West London, and it’s a very different experience from the Premier League. You can have a pint standing pitchside, bring a dog, meet friendly people, say hello to the players after the match, and grab a Bush Pie & Mash from the double-decker bus on the sideline.

There’s also already a bit of a Brentford connection. We recently hosted Brentford B at Hanwell, with the Geordies coming away with a 5–1 win. We’d love to see more Brentford supporters down at the ground.

We’re definitely not asking anyone to give up Brentford. The idea is the opposite: when the Bees are away, make Hanwell your second team

If you have a Brentford season ticket — or a season ticket for any other Premier League or EFL club — a Hanwell Town season pass is only £100 for the whole season, so it works out at roughly £5 per home league game.

Also, there’s no better time to give us a try: our first home league match of the season is tomorrow, Tuesday 11 August, against Basingstoke Town — 7:45pm kick-off. Come down and get in from the beginning.

QPR away? Come watch Hanwell Town play. Home opener tomorrow (Tuesday) night!

When QPR are away — or you’ve got a slow Tuesday night and just fancy watching some football — come down to Hanwell Town.

We play Step 3 non-league football in West London, and it’s a very different experience from a day at Loftus Road. You can have a pint standing pitchside, bring your dog, meet some friendly people, say hello to the players after the match, and grab a Bush Pie & Mash from the double-decker bus on the sideline.

And Hanwell and QPR already have a bit of history together: we’ve previously served as a home ground for both QPR’s U21s and QPR Women, so it feels like a pretty natural fit for Rangers supporters looking for a second club.

We’re definitely not asking anyone to give up QPR. The idea is the opposite: when Rangers are away, or you just want some live football close to home, make Hanwell your second West London club.

If you have a QPR season ticket — or a season ticket for any other Premier League or EFL club — a Hanwell Town season pass is only £100 for the whole season, so it works out at roughly £5 per home league game.

And there’s no better time to give us a try: our first home league match of the season is tomorrow, Tuesday 11 August, against Basingstoke Town — 7:45pm kick-off. Come down and get in from the beginning.

Hanwell Town earns a point on the road with a 2-2 draw at Malvern

…home opener Tuesday vs Basingstoke Town at 19:45

How much difference does paying a lot for a single outstanding player make?

Put differently...if we assume the average semi-pro non-league club is paying £50-200/week salary for a player, what happens if they supplement that by hiring a single £1000/week player? Any examples?
