Took Meshtastic on a Cruise… It Worked Better Than Expected

Just got back from a cruise and honestly… Meshtastic worked WAY better than I expected.

I brought a few of my custom MagSafe-compatible nodes onboard with the idea of testing communication around the ship and during shore excursions. Ended up using them constantly the entire trip.

Some things that worked surprisingly well:
- Messaging family around the cruise ship without relying on WiFi packages
- Keeping track of people during shore excursions
- Communication while split up in port areas/shopping
- Great battery life throughout the day

The funniest part was watching people go from:
“Wait… what is that thing on the back of your phone?”
to
“Okay that’s actually insanely useful.”

The compact MagSafe setup made it super easy because nobody wanted to carry another device around. Just snap it onto the phone and forget about it.

I’ve been designing/building these as a side project and I’m finally planning to start selling them on Etsy starting June 1st under the TerraLink name.

Current versions:
- TerraLink Standard → internal antenna + 2000mAh
- TerraLink Pro → external antenna + 3000mAh

If anyone wants to follow along, my Instagram is:
@terra_link

Would also love to hear other real-world Meshtastic use cases people are actually using regularly besides the typical “emergency communication” answer.

MeshCore meetup in the Netherlands

Recently, Heltec supported a community-led MeshCore meetup at Bitlair Hackerspace in Amersfoort.

Local users discussed MeshCore, LoRa, RF testing, flashing, OTA updates, regulations, sensors, and outdoor deployments. Some professional RF test equipment was also used to check antenna and radio performance.

We provided hardware support and a discount code for attendees. More importantly, we received useful real-world feedback from experienced users, which has been shared with our engineering team.

Thanks to the Dutch MeshCore community and Bitlair Hackerspace for organizing it.

Are there similar MeshCore / LoRa meetups happening in your area?

Giving Away My Equipment - Bay Area

Hi, all. I've dropped out of the hobby and am offering my equipment free to a good home. Pickup only, Oakland, CA. I have two companion radios, three repeaters, and a T-Deck. I'd rather them be used than moulder in my garage.

EDIT: I've had a few DMs already, so I guess I should post a complete list if the equipment so people can claim it. I'll update this post with that list sometime tomorrow. I'll have felt motivated to dig it all out of my garage by then :)

EDIT: In case anyone asks, I'm dropping out of mesh due to Discord. I don't get very good reception where I am and relied upon Discord to stay engaged. I already didn't like Discord, and the thought of a decentralized, open project using something radically opposite for it's communication bothered me, but I accepted it. When the age verification announcement happened, I cancelled my account. I'm never going back. Sadly, that also cut me off almost entirely from the mesh community, so I don't feel like maintaining and updating equipment I'm not getting much use out of. I understand why mesh uses Discord and why it's difficult to switch, but as long as Discord is the main hub, mesh isn't for me :(

increased maximum contacts?

I'm in the SF Bay, and we're very well connected with our mesh, to the point where all my Heltec v4.3 companions are hitting their 350 contacts limits...

Is there any way to increase the number of allowed saved contacts beyond the 350 cap?

Interference help… 🙏

I’ve been into MeshCore a while now and I’m setting up a group of friends on the mesh in the UK as a bit of a hobby project.

When I first put my heltec v4 repeater up on my chimney breast in January I was getting excellent rx and tx. I did some testing and was able to ping a nearby repeater 10km just out of visual line of sight. Reliably, >90% ping success. I would also never struggle to login to my repeater and would very rarely need to send messages twice.

Around update 1.13/1.14 I started to notice a drop in reliability.

Symptoms:

  1. More errors than packets received. At best 1:1 has been as bad as 2:1

  2. Have to resend messages ~50% of the time

  3. Often struggle to remote login to my repeater

  4. Missing more messages than normal

  5. Noise floor is poor but it’s a heltec 4.2 so expected.

  6. Ping success to my 10km neighbour dropped to 40%
When the ping is successful the SNR seems fine. When I do manage to TX it repeats across the country well and I’m able to receive messages well too, except the ones I’m not

Troubleshooting:

- tried powering repeater from power bank directly (avoiding usb extension)
- tried turning off the fuse board to eliminate something in my house interfering
- tried a rak and a heltec 4.3 inside the attic

Get the same results.

Am I right in thinking there must be some local interference issue? Or could it be that firmware and mesh growth has caused this?

I’m going to be making a car node.

Hello! So like my tittle says I’m going to be making a car node in the next few days and mounting it to the car. My big question is what type of node should it be (I’m a noob) please explain your reasoning I’ve heard an argument for repeater companion some people say just companion but I would like to help the network and utilize the DTN (Delay Tolerent Networking) nature of MC in my daily commute through large amounts of my state(ME) that has hardly any coverage. TIA!

Room server questions

I have a couple extra nodes and want to set one up as a room server at home. What I'd like is to be able to see public and private channel messages once I get back home. At work, reception is spotty and I get some, but not all messages. At home I have a roof repeater which is working well and I receive a lot more messages there than at work.

So, say at work I receive 2 out 10 messages sent on the public channel during the day. When I get home, will the room server automatically send me the remaining 8 messages? Or will I get duplicates? Or do I have to actually log into the room server to see messages stored there?

EDIT: My take on the room server was totally wrong, thanks for the clarification. I think the only logical solution to missed messages is to get permission for a roof node at work!

Another Antenna question

I got the Gizont antenna and I’ve gotten multiple people saying it’s bad. But when i try to look online this seems like the only legit alternative available in Europe. Are there any buy and forget options? I’ve heard Muzi a million times but they don’t sell to Europe without crazy import costs.

Edit: it would be for a T-Echo Plus, so with an SMA connector preferably.

Map on https://map.meshcore.io/ is not responding?

Hey all, just wanted to see if anyone else is having the same problem: The background map page on https://map.meshcore.io/ loads but I just get a spinner and no nodes shown.

Is this working for anyone else?

Looking for feedback on the design of dual-radio repeater

Hi, I’m designing a dual-radio MeshCore repeater intended to reduce congestion in high-traffic mesh networks.

Idea is to separate long-range forwarding traffic from local communication to reduce airtime contention and improve reliability when networks become saturated.

Looking for feedback from community: survery link

How do I connect the E220 900m30s to PlatformIO?

Has anyone tried the E220 900m30s module? I'm trying to connect it to a Promicro. I'm using the Faketec firmware. I changed the wrapper class to LLCC68 and configured all pins in PlatformIO. But board freezes during module initialization. I'm at a loss as to where to look for the problem...

Repeater Help

Im new to MeshCore and picked up the SeeedStudio P1 Pro with the upgraded 5.8 DBI antenna. I see tons of messages coming in via the public channel and the repeater says its receiving and transmitting messages. When Im communicating with my family in the house it seems to work repeating between us.

But none of us are able to TX back to the public channel. The messages send but say "1 Hop" and doesnt seem like anyone else can see our messages despite seeing everyone's traffic in public

I got it setup on a post on my fence since we are on a hill and the fence at the top of the slope is about as tall as our roof. Granted we are on the middle of the hill so Im expecting that elevation/terrain is my issue but wanted to see if anyone else had other theories as to what my issue is.

📻 MeshCore May Update: We're building a free, off-grid emergency communication network in WNY!

TL;DR: Meshcore in WNY is getting awesome! If you have access to or know someone with a rooftop in the city of Buffalo or the surrounding suburbs, or a hilltop that has a vast view, we want to give you a free solar-powered repeater! This will help more WNYers reach our emergency communication mesh. If you want to learn more, check out our links.

🚀 Our WNY MeshCore community has been making huge strides in the past month:

  • 📍 Boston, NY: We mounted a repeater high up in the hills in Boston, NY, that bridges the network into St. Catharines, which then bridges into Toronto and beyond.
  • 📍 Lockport: We have a new building-top repeater in Lockport providing excellent coverage both to the North (directly across Lake Ontario to Toronto) and to the South (all the way to the Boston, NY repeater site).
  • 📍 Sheldon, NY: Over the weekend, we placed a repeater on a grain silo on a hill in Sheldon, NY, that connects directly with downtown Buffalo.

🤔 For those not familiar with MeshCore:

It's a radio technology that utilizes small, low-powered radios that pair to your cellphone using Bluetooth.

  • 📱 These devices are called companions, and there are several types available for between $30 and $70.

Companion Radios connect to Mobile App via Bluetooth

These devices, while paired to your phone, allow you to send text messages by converting your text into radio waves. These waves then bounce across a network of similar radios assigned as repeaters.

  • ☀️ Repeaters use the same hardware as companions but are often built for outdoor applications and are solar-powered.

Magnet Mounted Solar Powered Repeater

Pole Mounted Hill Top Solar Repeater

Since these devices use encrypted messaging, the FCC requires the radio to provide less than 1 watt of power; therefore, having repeaters connected by line of sight is essential. We prioritize high locations such as hilltops and tall buildings; if we can place these self-contained radios up high, they can bridge across huge distances.

Public Channel Messages From our Northern Neighbors

If you are within range of one of the repeaters, you can use your companion to send either group channel messages or encrypted direct messages to anyone else within range of a mesh-connected repeater. Currently, the Public Channel in WNY is heavily trafficked, as we are combined with many MeshCore users in Toronto as well as WNY. It's a fun and exciting time to make connections.

Direct Message Between a St. Catharines and Boston NY

🚗 Wardriving: To help figure out where to place these repeaters, we drive around with companions attached to vehicles. This pings the mesh every 30 seconds and allows us to see on a public map places where we reach other repeaters at ground level.

https://buf.meshmapper.net/ Shows locations of repeaters and locations the mesh was pinged

🤝 How YOU can help:

If you, or a family member, or friend has access to a building in Buffalo or the surrounding suburbs, please help us get permission to mount a solar powered repeater there. Also hill top areas with views of the surrondings are aslo ideal!!

Why it's hassle-free:

  • Self-Sufficient: These devices are completely self sufficient (require no power, internet).
  • Damage-Free: They mount using magnets or hose clamps (no drilling).
  • Interference-Free: They use a frequency (ISM Band) that won't cause any interference with other devices.

PLEASE we are hoping to make this service available for everyday folks in Western New York and need community support to be successful. We will forever be in your debt, and know you are helping to create a network that will help you and your surrounding area with an emergency communication tool that will work independent of power outages, and cell disruptions!

🔗 If you want to learn more:

In Western NY we have a community Discord filled with folks who are excited to help teach and support anyone who joins. If you just want to stop in and say hello we like that too!!

Two meshcore solar relay nodes have been installed.

The nodes use the e22 30s module, and the power supply uses a 5W solar panel. The batteries are all connected in parallel with two 18650 cells.

Position

I've spent a few months on Meshtastic with a few different nodes. One thing I like about MT is the position tracking ability for while I'm hiking in the wilderness but have access to satellites without much need for messaging.

I recently flashed Meshcore and I'm really impressed with the idea of cleaning up community traffic. However, as I move closer to MC from MT am I losing positioning broadcasting ability? Can I broadcast position repeatedly over a private MC channel so my people know where I am on a long hike (as a basic example)? I'm not very interested in broadcasting GPS to LongFast/Public.

I've spent hours with MT videos and text to learn all this. I haven't really seen anything on MC regarding GPS and position broadcasting except for the On/Off switches. Enlighten me please.

I use SenseCap T1000E and Wio tracker primarily.

Deploying a Meshcore Repeater. Things to Keep in Mind

I've been tinkering with Meshcore lately and decided to build my own repeater in my area to receive and send messages on the network much more effectively, and to have my companion node at home.

Among everything, I think many people don't appreciate the OTA Update situation enough, it seems pretty basic, but the project updates approximately once a month. Bug fixes, new features, and all that. But here's the thing: once you've deployed your repeater in a high-difficulty area with difficult access, powered by solar panels to make it completely autonomous, you need to know how to update it.

I created this guide in blog format in case it helps when you want to use it. I think there are several important things many people might not know about, like the OTAFIX topic or how the nRF Connect app sometimes seems to fail. Hope you like it!
