Track maintenance operative

I have come across a job as track maintenance operative and was wondering if anyone could give me some more info regarding the job. I have a friend who does the same role and has told me to apply because he knows I am fed up with my current job so feel he is just trying to sweeten the sound of Network Rail to me.
In reality what is it like being a track maintenance operative and what type of tasks are carried out? What do shift patterns look like and how tiring is the job mentally and physically? How many bank holidays have to be worked and do these included Christmas Day/Boxing Day/new years day.

Thanks to anyone who can give advice 🙏🏻

How hard is it to enter UK rail Signalling & Telecoms / Maintenance roles as a complete beginner?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking to switch into UK rail and I’m interested in two roles: Operative (Signalling & Telecoms) – Fast Track Technician and Operative (Signalling Maintenance) from Network Rail

I currently have no rail experience. I’m trying to understand how realistic it is to get into these roles as a complete beginner.

Are these roles truly entry-level / suitable for career changers, or is it very competitive and mostly selected from internal candidates or people with experience?

Any advice on the recruitment process, training pathway, or chances of success would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Been accepted for level 3 engineering. Been put with track. Just wondering what the training will be like, how often ill be in classroom and such? Im a bit older and leaving night shift retail management to do this.

I know its mostly nights with my contract stating 39 weeks of nights and 25 weeks of weekends. What's the shift pattern going to be like?

Does anyone at Network Rail use GymFlex for David Lloyd? Can you get a couple membership?

Hi everyone,
I’m due to start at Network Rail soon and I’m trying to work out whether it’s worth waiting to join David Lloyd through the employee benefits.
I have already been quoted £250/month for a single membership or £400/month for a couple membership directly by David Lloyd Milton Keynes on a 12-month contract.
I understand that Network Rail offers GymFlex, but I can’t see the prices until my benefits are activated.
I have a few questions:
Is David Lloyd Milton Keynes available through Network Rail’s GymFlex?
Can you get a couple/joint membership through GymFlex, or is it only for individual memberships?
Roughly how much do you pay through GymFlex compared with joining directly?
Would you recommend waiting until I start before signing up?
Thanks in advance!

Not Progressing to Application Accepted

Hi, is it just me not reaching Application Accepted when applying to jobs or is that just the new website?

When I apply it says Application Under Review and then says Application Under Review a second time when the website refreshes after 0200. Then a month later went to Unsuccessful.

It used to go to Application Accepted automatically.

I'm not sure if it's just the change with the website or if I am being auto rejected and no person actually sees my application. Thanks!

Operative MMT rejection, what is the roles requirements?

Just looking for some clarification.

Applied for this role 18th June. Rejected 22nd June with the following message:

"Your application has now been reviewed against the specific role criteria by the hiring manager. We're really sorry to let you know that you haven't been invited to interview on this occasion.

Whilst this role wasn't the right fit, we hope you'll consider applying for other opportunities with us in the future."

However in the initial vacancy, it reads: "Our operative community comes from a variety of different backgrounds, and this might be the first time that you've even considered a career in rail. We're focused on your transferrable skills and behaviours and if you can demonstrate that, then we will provide you with all the necessary training to have you working safely and competently out on the network"

Now granted I'm not from a railway background but looking for a change. My previous experience is in automotive and PSV engineering and even some structural welding and fabrication. Currently in a role that deals with outdoor maintenance of many kind of structures, small building tasks, joinery and vegetation work. So I'm wondering just what transferable skills they are looking for from outsiders into the industry?

Thanks in advance.
