Why is Newcastle so traffic congested these days?

Hello, I’ve lived in Newcastle my whole life, and lately I keep wondering: why has the traffic become so bad in almost every area? It feels like it’s getting worse every single year and not decreasing.

I remember before 2020 — and especially 10 years ago — when there was barely any traffic at all. Now it’s exploded to the point where nearly every road feels congested, even outside peak hour. It honestly doesn’t make much sense considering Newcastle only has a population of around 300,000.

What confuses me even more is that we already have a pretty good public transport system, with a train line running every 20 minutes, Uber, Light rail, Lyft, Taxis and plenty of buses as well. You’d think that would help reduce congestion, but instead traffic seems to be everywhere, all the time. It just doesn’t make sense…

Nine shareholders vote for regional sale to WIN

Nine shareholders have today unanimously voted in favour of selling off their regional TV assets to WIN Television, including Nine (NTD-8) Darwin. The competition watchdog ACCC had already approved the deal.

It means for Darwin viewers, there will almost certainly soon be changes coming to Nine Darwin. The arrival of WIN Television into the NT will see the end of the currently Newcastle-produced 9News Darwin mini-bulletins, to likely be replaced with short, generic, WIN News noodle updates. As for a full bulletin, if it were to return, it would have the WIN News branding, and would serve the entire NT, from Darwin to Alice Springs.

Recommendation for Male Brazilian Wax

Hi, I just wondering if there are any places around Newcastle that does Male Brazilian Waxing? Otherwise, maybe Laser Waxing if there are any?

It will be the first time I do Brazilian Wax so if you also have any advice or thoughts (I’m Asian with thick hairs, fyi), please let me know!

Thank you so much!

Laurel and Hardy on Honeysuckle

Anyone else along Honeysuckle Drive woken up at 2:30am by the two Meth Connoisseurs trying to climb up the restaurant canopy around where The Beehive is? They weren’t the stealthiest, I woke up to one of them screaming “if you don’t help me up I’ll never speak to you again CANT,” looked out of my window and caught the end of them abandoning their attempt with a lot of screaming before they ran off towards Rydges, was wondering if anyone managed to get any footage, it reminded me of watching Laurel and Hardy with my grandad as a kid (Stan Laurel possibly on less meth)

Flag outside property ?

Hey all. Might be irrelevant but thought I would ask. I come home and there's a flag in the council strip outside my house? Any idea what this might be? No note in my letterbox.

Just drove through Edgeworth about ten minutes ago. Main Rd westbound has been completed blocked and diverted at the Aldi by police. Eastbound was fine.

Avoid if you can.

Signaling right going off roundabouts

I often wait for people because they signal they are going to turn right but go straight while still signalling they are going right! Why do people do it? What goes through their head? I know it’s only afew seconds but it’s very inconsiderate.

Anywhere to watch the final EPL games in Newcastle live?

It’s been a long 22 year wait for me as an Arsenal fan and I’m keen to watch the last game live somewhere. Does anyone know of something open that late.

Cheers 🍻

Speaking publicly about grooming and safeguarding concerns connected to Newcastle’s live music scene

I need to speak publicly about something that happened to me between the ages of 15 and 17 within Newcastle’s live music scene in 2010

At the time, I was in care, vulnerable, isolated, and struggling through an unstable period of my life.

During that period, I became involved with an adult man in his 20s who was active in Newcastle’s live music scene and worked within a youth venue I was part of. He was not just “someone around gigs.” He held a position of trust and influence within spaces that were supposed to be safe for young people.

He used his connections in live music, production, and the local scene to build trust and access.
What happened was not a one-off interaction. It became an ongoing pattern where personal boundaries between an adult in a position of power and a vulnerable teenager were repeatedly crossed.

Looking back now as an adult, what stands out most to me is the imbalance.
I was a child in care trying to find stability, support, belonging, and connection within music and youth spaces.
He was an adult with status and influence in those same spaces.

That dynamic mattered.
It is about an adult using positions within live music and creative communities to gain emotional access to a vulnerable young person.
What also concerns me is that I was not hidden from these environments — people knew who he was, knew he what he was doing I was not the only one
and concerns were raised at the time, he was asked to stop contact with me, Despite this the contact continued.

Today, he still works within the live music scene
including sound engineering, production for local bands, and music teaching.

That is why I believe this is a serious safeguarding issue.
A formal police report has already been made.
I am speaking publicly because Newcastle’s music scene — and any space involving young people — needs to take safeguarding and power dynamics seriously.

Too often, people excuse behaviour when someone is well known, talented, connected, or respected within a scene.
But influence does not remove accountability.

Young people deserve environments where mentorship, creativity, and community are not used as tools for manipulation, boundary-crossing, or exploitation.
People deserve to make informed decisions about who they allow around vulnerable young people.
And vulnerable young people deserve to be protected.

EDIT:

I want to make it clear that this post is only the beginning of speaking publicly about what happened to me.

I have already provided information, screenshots, and context to people and organisations connected to Newcastle’s live music community, including bands and individuals who continue to associate and work professionally with him despite being made aware of the safeguarding concerns and the existence of a formal police report.
They chose not to distance themselves and continued to publicly associating themselves with this person

Over the next week, I intend to speak further about the environments, power structures, and people who enabled this behaviour, ignored warnings, or continued professional associations after being made aware.

This is not about “cancel culture” or personal drama. It is about accountability, safeguarding, and protecting vulnerable young people in creative spaces.

Help finding a Korean Language Tutor

Sorry if this is the incorrect sub but I couldn’t find a more appropriate one:

My friend and I are looking for a Korean tutor in the Newcastle/Maitland area.

We tried Language Trainers but they were unable to find someone in the area and I haven’t been able to find another suitable option.

I would really appreciate any recommendations or insight, thank you in advance!
