Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

In 2021, Pulte Homes plead guilty to 22 counts of destroying gopher tortoise burrows in Marion County. The punishment? A $13,000 fine. Had Pulte Homes relocated these tortoises per FWC regulations, they'd have paid $44,000 or so. Folks there are so many things wrong with this picture!

Mayor Marciano, Chief Balken, and multiple Ocala Police officers served in new Federal Lawsuit

The local media outlets won't notify the community about things that actually matter in Marion County. They’ll tell you a lady is suing Publix because she slipped, or that they opened a skate park.

But they will NOT tell you that the Mayor, the Chief of Police, and a plethora of command staff and officers were just served by Federal Marshals at City Hall and OPD Headquarters. They are all named in the same federal lawsuit.

If you didn't know, the City and the Police Department are already under a permanent federal injunction from 2021. For the last year and a half, I have become a forensic technician on how the Ocala Police Department operates. I have studied their policies, their history, their foundation, and how they are structured. I cracked a code most of us don’t understand.

When I built my complaint, I did everything a lawyer said not to do. At the end of the day, a lot of lawyers just want to bill you or drag a case out. Most only practice one layer of law. I built a case that silos multiple interlocking layers of different laws.

Their job is to make suing the police impossible because of Qualified Immunity. In my situation, the police literally lied in document after document. I feel like it is like this in every case, but we are usually just too tired to do the homework.

I am not a lawyer. I don’t practice law. But when you mess with me when you shouldn’t have, it brings something out of a person. I turned my rage into procedure. Regardless of what anyone says, I don’t have a GED or a diploma—but I was able to build an 8-count Federal Complaint navigating some of the most complicated federal laws on the books.

It didn’t happen overnight. It took stress, depression, and absolute obsession.

All I ask as a member of this community is that you don’t let this go over your heads. The criminal charges against me were completely dropped (Nolle Prosequi). People still tried to make me out to be the bad guy and claimed I was lying, but I went through all the proper procedures. I filed this federal complaint, a Federal Judge granted my motion to proceed Pro Se, and the court has taken judicial notice of my dropped charges.

The media refuses to cover this because the only time high-ranking officials are named in lawsuits like this is when the FBI or DOJ steps in—never by one of us. The local outlets are ignoring it despite the server metadata, the video, the audio recordings, and the documents presented by the defendants themselves.

The only thing I can do now is reach out to the people and fight my fight in court. Here are the active counts in the federal complaint:

COUNT I– 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (Fourth Amendment Unreasonable Seizure / False Arrest)
COUNT II– 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (Fourth Amendment Excessive Force)
COUNT III– 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (Malicious Prosecution / Unlawful Legal Process)
*COUNT IV– 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (Fourteenth Amendment Due Process – Use of Materially Unreliable or Post-Hoc Evidence)
COUNT V– 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (Municipal Liability – Monell Custom/Policy)
COUNT VI– 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (Supervisory Liability – Deliberate Indifference and Ratification)
COUNT VII– 42 U.S.C. § 1981 (Race-Based Interference with Making and Enforcement of Contracts)
COUNT VIII– 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (First Amendment – Viewpoint Discrimination / Retaliatory Exclusion)

This is a fight I have to walk through ALONE , but I ask that you guys share this because it is real, it is active, and it is happening right here in Ocala.

Experience with Lamplighter Apts

I am looking to any inputs on what to do because I’m puzzled here and this is unusual.

We applied for an apt, they kept pushing the availability date till they moved it about two weeks. Did all screening, talked to our previous landlords and got everything they asked for and that’s it. No answer after they said it takes 1 or 2 days for processing.

Has been a week and no one is picking up the calls or responding to emails! Is this typical? Just ghost us? Should we wait or try to find another place?

The apt is not available anywhere so either they are still processing or gave it to someone else. The issue is we need the lease for a confirmed address to do many things before coming to the place. Also, it’s the best location in terms of my work.

Any experience with them? The reviews are too good so not sure what’s going on.

Thanks a lot!

Steam whistle

I live near lake weir high and each day I hear this steam whistle around 12:30ish and 4:29pm. Does anyone know where it comes from? Initially thought it was the school bell until I heard it while outside and on weekends.

What is even happening

Driving 75NB just south of Ocala at 2:00AM; why in the living fuck is the traffic this nonstop? Not to offend, but what is possibly happening in Ocala that makes the southbound carry in an unbroken line like this for 20+ miles outside of the city?

Interested in shrimp keeping. Aquarium store recommendations?

I bought a one gallon fishbowl as a gag for work, now I’ve been interested in keeping shrimp and snails. I know the bowl isn’t large enough for shrimp keeping, but I would like to start an aquascape in the bowl to transplant the biome created into a larger tank to support shrimp and snails.

Are there any other shrimp keeping enthusiasts around here that could give me places to shop for supplies, plants, and advice for a newbie.

Thanks in advance!

Where should I look?

I hope this is allowed and I’m not breaking any rules. I currently live in Gainesville, but my roommate and I would like to move out of our apartments where we’re both currently paying around $1700 rent each month, it varies with utilities. We’re looking for a house around $1700 to share.

We really would like a two bed two bath house somewhere off main roads or some say ‘horse country’. We would like a yard for my dog who is five (she’s kind of perfect) also hopefully a walk-in shower and washer and dryer. The middle of nowhere sounds great.

I check the websites like Zillow or renters and honestly, I feel like I’m seeing a same things. Also, if I could find private landlord versus a Realty company, that would be ideal. We have no problems with the rental companies, except for they want to tack a fee onto everything.

If anyone has any suggestions of where I should look, please feel free to message your comment we would like to stay on the north side of Ocala. My future roommate works in Reddick.. thanks!

Blue sink

Does anyone in this group know anyone who has dived the Blue Sink in the national forest or done it themselves? The water clarity once you get out there freaks me out a little bit but I’m so curious about what it looks like/what is down there. I was able to find an old Wordpress style blog post from over a decade ago about a group who checked this place out and said they didn’t see much. Others say there are cars down there. I can’t find many first hand accounts though. I would love to hear any stories!

Possibly moving to Calesa Township

Hello! Just like the caption says, it's possible. We had an opportunity present where we could move to Calesa Township. I'm hoping to get some feedback to help narrow down the pros and cons. I did try searching within the sub, but most are over a year old or not much information. Would be moving from the Treasure Coast area for comparison.

How's the area currently? Where we are now, its growing and growing fast, would be stupid to leave, but we're at the point that the price range is getting out of hand.

The schools in the area? We have 2 in elementary, 1 in middle and 1 in high school. Current school absolute trash. Kids went from AB students to failing common core classes because of the constant revolving door of teachers and curriculum. This year has been tough on them. High school is mid, just average.

What's in the area now? Stores? Restaurants? Parks? Family entertainment?

Thank you all in advance!

In-Person Drawing/Art Classes for Adults?

I’m looking for an in-person art class locally that is held on the weekends. I really am looking more into drawing lessons at the moment to get better at my art but am open to other subjects later on. Anyone have any suggestions? Everything I see is like making candles or painting with a twist like stuff and I’m not searching for that right now. Any assistance would be great. Thank you in advance!

Follow up on the Kitten in the abandoned building

Thank you to OP for letting the community know about her.

She is doing well, eating her food and eyes are looking better with her antibiotics. I still haven't found a home for her, and the Humane Society Animal Shelter emailed me and said she is too young to be at the shelter, and there's no fosters available. She is recovering and I hope will be a totally healthy kitten in a week or two.

Her vet bill was an unexpected expense I was happy to pay for, and if I have to I absolutely will buy her food, a litter box, toys, etc untill she is old enough to be surrendered, but if anyone in the community has those items and doesn't need them, please message me. I am not very well off and would appreciate it greatly.
