r/octopathtraveler

i love how OT0's Gacha artifact is extremely blatant (+OT0 First Impression)

Finally got myself Octopath 0 and really impressed with the Prologue, it's like extremely FF coded ngl, kinda wish there's an entire Octopath game with this ammount of focus between characters, i really like the bond between Zero, Stia, Phenn and Laurana, i can see them be the "Big Four" of this story.

By the time i finally go trough the Three Main Villain's story i can't help but notice how much of a gacha game's story length the story are:
Act 1: Simple introduction of the villain of the story that last 15-30 minutes
Act 2: Tense chapter that builds up the finale that last 30 minutes (albeit the writting is kinda... eh?)
Act 3: Grand Finale with insane plot progression that last an hour

Compared to other games where each chapter is like 30 minutes long each, i found it both jarring and funny at the same time, i was like "yeah this used to be a Gacha Game, that made sense"

=====================

now, while we're on this topic, i wanna share my first impression of the game.
the game is really fun and as much as Octopath game i wanted to be, but i'm not a huge fan on how your attack doesn't multiply when you boosted, i get it was meant to avoid the shield bloating because how spamable if that's the case, but for the most part i felt like i'm just relying on normal attacks spam than my characters skills, which is something i was looking forward to

another thing that i'm not too fond about right now (for reference, i just beat the main Trio Villain), is that the new characters is just... non existent? like i literally have no impression of characters like Viator, he's just a dude who wants to join my team because of... treasure? or Saoirse joining me because we make a good co-dancer with her. I hope i could witness more of their stories and personality, like i'm really interested on Macy cause she seems like the perfect blend of Alfyn and Castti or Alexia where she sounds unhinged from her battle voice lines, i wanna see more of them than just banters

other than that, i'm really enjoying the game so far, i really love every chapter's Act 3 by far, and i'm excited to reunite with the OT1 cast again, i'm surprised Laurana actually joined relatively late, i was sure she's going to be my 4th party member, but it's Macy instead

i heard a lot of fuzz about Sazantos, so i'm really excited to experience his story

also THE GAME IS OVERSATURATED, please tone down the coloring 😭
i thought the game would look better once i played it, but no it genuinely hurts my eyes for the first few hours of the playtrough

Flamesgrace as comparison cause it's the only OT1 town i have full reference, but Rippletide and Sunshade is worse with how oversaturated the game is

OT2 Story versus FF

So I’m about 20 hours into OT2, and I can’t help but think the stories are so well done. It makes me think what a final fantasy with animated scenes could be like if they stopped making such bombastic worlds and stories. Just simpler but engaging storylines. Am I little crazy?

Most embarrassing experience playing the game?

For fun question, can be used for Octopath 1, 2 or 0 (though I didn't play 0 yet!)

I'll start with my own, so people can get an idea what I mean.

My Protagonist in Octopath Traveler 2 was Agnea, and I played the game very thoroughly - 100%. And throughout the entire game, I simply didn't know that Agnea when using a dance move while having a companion with her path action gets a bonus. I never used her day path action unless I was forced to, and forgot the tutorial.

I learned about this not even in the Final Boss, but during the EXTRA BATTLES. Not because I read about it, but because I thought I should get a companion for those fights since they're actually hard.

I was so shocked when that happened. Picking a Protagonist and not even knowing what they can do throughout the entire game...lol.

Was there ever a patch fixing those skill translation errors?

I was considering replaying 0 soon but I remember being very frustrated and having to Google a lot why skills weren't working the way they said and being frustrated that there were apparently a bunch of translation errors in skill descriptions and wanted to know if they were ever fixed.

Which game is your most fave and why?

I just finished OT1, OT2 and OT0. OT2 is my fave because of so many plot twists but I do find OT1's final boss to be the creepiest of all games. OT0 is great but it leaves me with so many questions....

Favourite battle quotes!

What’s everyone’s favourite battle quotes? Any game, any trigger (turn start, boosting, skill use, victory, whatever).

There’s classics like “my blade is unbending!” and “my focus is unparalleled!” (which btw I swear Cyrus says it WAY faster in OT0 than he did in OT1, but I haven’t actually gone back to check), but I wanna hear some oddballs too.

This post was prompted by Goodwin’s (OT0) “bewitching mists!” when he uses Dance of Mist, which has definitely gotten me out of some trouble. His VA always gives 110%, really fits the character

Another favourite is (late game OT0 spoiler) Tatloch’s “unworthy maggot!” when her turn starts, or sometimes she’ll just cackle like a maniac when you go to max boost. Deborah Wilson can do no wrong in my book

One from OT2 was Agnea pronouncing the scholar spells names “fireball burn!”, “icewind blow!”, “lightning bolt strike!”, compared to Osvald’s “BURN!”

One that’s a little more… questionable is “fighting is not what I do…” from Temenos “I will have answers” Mistral on the victory screen. That, and “now die!” comes up CONSTANTLY during his coercion fights, which uh… not what we’re here to do, Tem

I'm impressed with how committed they were in writing her dialogue

Shakesperean dialect is rare in pop culture nowadays, especially in video games. But I'm not lying when I say that I'm impressed with how committed they were with H'aanit's speak. I mean, imagine typing in hundreds of pronouns in Early Modern English consistently? Woman even uses the suffixes "est" & "th" in like every time she speaks. So, yes, it must've taken real dedication to both write & perform this kind of dialect for a character and make it sound natural. Props to the writers & actress.

I wish there was an easy mode

I kinda don't have a lot of time to play, I already have 40+ hours in OT2 and I have not even beaten any chapter 5. I'm currently stuck against Dolcinea phase 2 she is completely beating my ass. I really hate that levels don't matter at all in this game because everything is so damn expansive and I'm broke af and I don't have the energy and time to spend even more hours into grinding money.

This game is good even if the writing can be quite childish, I really just want to see how the late game story unfolds but instead I'm just stuck here

The legendary Partitio-Agnea banter

During Chapter 3, Partitio could be seen being curious and particularly invested on Agnea's peaches. The resulting dialogue was part innocent, part steamy, and 100% hilarious.

Seriously, go play Octopath Traveler 2 if you haven't.

Places to level up to 20ish?

I have already checked Youtube videos but wanted to ask here for Advice.

I have all 8 party members. Ophelia is my first pick. Shes about level 21-23

Im trying to catch everybody up and they are around level 17-18

Where are some good grinding spots to level up? This video mentions the path of beasts and fight the birds. But was wondering where else i can go.

I know gear is more important than leveling but I also feel when I head to the chapter 1 town for Ophelia (bottom left of map), I am unsure where to try to go for upgrading daggers and other weapons.

Any advice or tips for early game? :)

First time playing any octopath game, started the first game and I’m looking for advice on team building

I chose Cyrus to start with and I just unlocked all of the secondary jobs. I’m planning on using: Cyrus w/Merchant, Ophilia w/Dancer, H’aanit w/Warrior, and for the last spot I’m thinking Therion but can’t decided on the secondary job for him, leaning toward apothecary. Any ideas, tips here? Don’t want to get farther in the game and wish I would’ve gone a different direction.

Which Octopath game should I play next?

So I've just finished the first game (post-game boss and all) and had a blast! But now I'm stuck deciding on whether I should play 2 or 0 next.

Normally I'd go in release order and play 2 next, but I've read that it's more standalone while 0 is a direct prequel.

Forgot how much I loved these games

Recently bought OT0 for the Steam summer sale, started playing it yesterday. I’ve played both OT1 and OT2 but it’s been a while. Never finished either of them but I want to go back and do more. I just felt like I got to a point where I needed to grind a lot to continue the stories.

There’s just something cozy about these games that makes me want to play them for hours. I love the graphics, the story lines, even the cutscenes keep me entertained and usually I just skip cutscenes.

I’m gonna take my time with OT0 and try to enjoy it and finish more of it. I hope we get an OT3 eventually.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER 2: new player, new to the genre, suggestions on other games and opinions, no spoilers.

I was commenting on r/patientgamers under a post about Octopath Traveler 2 and I am relatively new to the game.
It came out as a very long comment, so to further exploit the invested time, I decided to post it here.
I don't want to be mean or start a quarrel, I just want suggestions on different games I could try and people to share their experience on the game and if they felt similarly as me and if that changed with more time in the game and whatever people feel to share that is not spoiler, get gud or hate.
----

I am playing the game right now (At this point more than 1 month, but I have only 10 hours on it), I really like it but it took me a lot (4-5 hours) to start getting into it.

I am not a fan of wasting 4-5 hours with this feeling of "maybe I should just drop-it", but the game is so charming that I felt something good would come out of it.

Right now I finally understood the exploration and how it works and the game became wayyy more rewarding.
But I do hate that, since exploration is my favorite part, there are soo many useless battles.

But I am still at the very beginning (like I did just chapter 2 of one character), therefore I find the fighting still entertaining enough, but I fear they will become boring the moment I will need to backtrack.

The characters are so mono-dimensional that I am not super invested in all of them, because I just don't feel them.
I have only tried all the characters from the left continent (i guess is a continent) and I love sai for being mysterious and the dancer, I forgot the name, because she and I are basically the same.
I do think the story is still entertaining, but not good enough to bring me back to playing most of the time, because I am not that curious about it and therefore it's hard to bring me back since I still have this voice in my head that says that the game is too slow.

I will still play it though because I just graduated and now my summer is starting and this is a perfect game for the steamdeck.
Travelling and playing this is going to be soooo good.
Especially at home where I have tons of free time.

I am invested in the combat system and freedom and the exploration and the job system because they are all new things to me.
I never played a game with jobs and secondary jobs and I am a hugeee fun of learning combos and combat and creating cool fighters with what I like.
I also like games that are not only min-max and this is allow you to be also more balanced.
It's overall an interesting combat system for me and I want to discover all the cool weapons to stack effects and do cool things while becoming the hero I need to be.

I am basically doing my own review here, this comment is not exactly for you all in the sense that I am just sharing my opinion.

Before this I played sea of stars, you all probably know it.
I really loved it because it was a good way to get back to the genre (I say "get back", but I essentially played just when I was a child), but I felt the story had the same issues (the characters are all good or predictably bad) and the combat system is a bit boring compared to this game, but it doesn't last as long so it's fine.
I loved it so much that I felt like getting more into this genre, and I think it's a good investment, but sea of stars is a weird comparison (i am noticing), because it's so freaking good in the things that it does, and it doesn't have much more.
In comparison,I feel that jrpgs tend to be veeeerryyyyyyyy wide and broad in terms of the things that they do, but half of those things are so boring to me.
I am discovering all of this now.

I heard that "chained echoes" is a good sea of stars counterpart, I honestly went for octopath traveller because it looksss way more charming and it scratched more of that itch, but maybee it's not the perfect choice.
But again, now I have time for also for the "non-perfect" choices and octopath is a good game.

I tried persona 5 royal before this, it didn't sadly give me any whatsoever joy (besides for the charming part, even though in a very different way) and I think I played it less than OT2 because it's much more overwhelming.
I heard a lot of people saying that P5R is not an entry-level entry to the genre and I thought It wouldn't be a problem because I don't consider myself a newbie for games, I am usually pretty good, but I guess I am a newbie in jrpgs and also I didn't have the time.
I think I will be back to P5R in the future, maybe it will feel less overwhelming, but not rn really, the combat system feels boring and the dating sim part seems cool, but at the very beginning is just confusing.
I know it's an amazing game, I am just not the perfect target as I thought I would be.

Finally, do you have any suggestions for jrpgs or games in general knowing what I just said?
Also, for OT2, I am really looking for the scholar job since I believe it will help with the random encounter rate, hopefully enough so that random encounters will not feel a problem even when backtracking, but just joyful moments to test my skills.

While posting this in this subreddit, I also got to see that there are 2 games I didn't know of that could be interesting.
OT3 who is not out yet and OT0 which I had no clue it was a thing when I bought this a few months ago.
Is the combat system of OT0 different and is this entry more beginner/time-wise friendly?

Does anyone else like that the player character of 0 doesn't talk?

I've seen quite a few posts in the past talking about how they thought that the player character not having voiced dialog is a weakness of 0 compared to the dialog in 1 and 2, which I can see but considering that in 0 you make your own character i actually kind of like that its not voiced so you can imagine whatever your character says based on who you decide they are.

Like for example when i first played 0 I was kind of surprised by not having dialog at first but ended up deciding that my character would just be mute but otherwise very expressive and emotional which made it easy for people to know what she's thinking which added a fun bit of personalization to the character that I think would have been missing if the character was fully voiced since that would mean that how they act is predetermined rather than ul to the player.
