I’ve already had two venues for my sons birthday not work out so this place felt like my best option since I didn’t want to move the location very much due to family driving from far out of town. It’s for my son’s first bday and it’s a Wild West theme. All of the art work stays, nothing on the walls, but I can use those white arch things and move the chairs.
I have a brown paper banner being made and I want to do something with his nb-12mo photos. Help😅

Going away party craft

Hello everyone!

I am throwing a small surprise going away party for a dear friend who is moving out of state for grad school. She has a lot of anxiety about the move and doesn’t like a lot of attention so I am keeping it small and I would like to do some kind of craft to keep our hands busy! She is an artist and our friend group ranges in artistic abilities so I want something that can easily be adapted to fit everyone’s abilities! I looked at Pinterest but wasn’t really inspired by anything.

Thank you in advance!

Wrong Party Theme

Hi! My class (high school) is going to have an acquaintance party where the theme is Wrong Party. While it is a nice theme, especially for cosplaying and acting, its a bit tricky for the decor team (me </3 ). We need to capture the chaos of the theme yet still keep everything in harmony. Any ideas or suggestions on how to execute this? Any advice is appreciated!! <33

Turning 30 and having party throwback to the past 30 years. Accesories, styles, random stuff. Any ideas?

There’s a bunch I’ve already thoughts of: cheetah print, grunge, emo, low rise jeans, silly bandz, feather in hair, y2k fashion tops, Velcro wallets, those neon leggings, chains on jeans.

I’d love to hear more ideas for both genders, though I could especially use more for men. Or even a few decor ideas

What reusable items do I buy so I don't have to keep buying for every party I host?

I started hosting dinner parties about a year ago for my family and friends and I've come to enjoy it. I typically host anywhere from 6 to 8 people so not a big group, and it's really simple like no decors, just good food and some games. We recently moved to a bigger house with about 100 sqm yard. so I'm excited to finally up my game when hosting.

What are the things that I should buy so that I don't have to keep buying stuff when I host? Like things I can reuse, and decors as well so that there could be variety. Maybe string lights? But where do we hang it? I'm thinking of buying one of those arches that can be disassembled when you don't use it anymore? Will that work? Or is there a much simpler way?

The events I host are my birthday, my husband's birthday, we recently had a child as well so we will start to host for baby's birthday too, New Year's eve, occasional Christmas day lunch.

Aiming for elegant but not plain vibe when hosting.

I appreciate the help.

Montreal – Looking for a warehouse or industrial space for a proper DIY rave

Hey everyone,

I'm one of the organizers behind a local electronic music collective in Montreal, and I'm hoping someone here might be able to point us in the right direction.

One of the biggest challenges we've faced over the years is finding a venue where people can genuinely dance until the morning on a proper sound system. Between noise restrictions, liquor laws, and venue limitations, it's becoming harder and harder to create the kind of experience that made so many of us fall in love with this scene.

We've been fortunate enough to organize events in different venues around Montreal, and we recently had the privilege of curating a night at the legendary Stereo Montreal. But lately, I keep coming back to the idea of doing something completely different: a proper DIY warehouse rave.

We're looking for a warehouse, industrial building, or unique space within about 30 minutes of Montreal that could potentially host this kind of event. Ideally, somewhere where we could build the experience from scratch, bring in a serious sound system, and create something that feels raw and authentic.

I know these places aren't usually advertised publicly, and I completely understand if people don't want to post locations openly. If anyone has any leads, knows someone who owns a suitable space, or has experience organizing events in this type of venue, I'd really appreciate it if you could send me a DM.

Would love to hear any ideas or advice.

Thanks ❤️

Small party activities?

So I’m having a birthday party latter in the year and the theme is Undertale/Deltarune. Guests will be dressing up as some of the characters, theres will be a small hunt around the house to find cutouts, and the main activity will be a game show for everyone to play.

I’m worried there won’t be much to do before or after the quiz other than just eating and drinking. Are there any small activities I can include that people can do whenever they please that I could maybe spin to be related to the theme?

How do you handle invitations for a party?

I’ve noticed that sending invitations is usually the easy part. The difficult part is keeping track of everyone afterward. Some people respond immediately, some forget, and some say they’ll let you know later.

With a bigger guest list, it can become a little frustrating trying to remember who has confirmed and who hasn’t, especially when the party is getting closer.

What’s your go-to method for keeping track of invitations and RSVPs when planning a party?

30th birthday party ideas

When I was 10 years old I had a club penguin birthday party. I’m turning 30 this year and plan on using the same invite from 20 years ago to have a club penguin themed 30th birthday party! I plan on having a dress code of looking like a penguin or dressing monochrome like a puffle. I’d like to also do some games and wanted some ideas. Obviously gonna have some mancala. If I do it at home we may make our own pizzas. If I do it outdoors maybe find a big hill and some crappy plastic sleds. Any other ideas??

Rum Is Such a Versatile Spirit — More People Should Know About It

This is my rum collection and my experience with rum so far.

I’m still relatively new to the rum world, but I’ve really fallen down the rabbit hole. I wanted to make this post because I think rum is one of the most versatile spirits out there, yet a lot of people only associate it with overly sweet cocktails or basic mixer rum.

I’m sharing my experience based on what I’ve actually tasted so far, along with some things I’ve learned along the way. I’m by no means an expert, so take my tasting notes as one newcomer’s perspective. My goal is to give someone who is just getting into rum a good starting point and show just how wide the world of rum really is.

I’ve included a picture of the bottles I currently own — specifically the ones I haven’t completely drank yet 😂 — along with some of the bottles I’ve already finished in the honorable mentions.

Plantation / Planteray & Appleton Estate Signature

Starting on the left, we have the Plantation/Planteray rums and Appleton Estate Signature.
These are primarily my mixing rums. Personally, I generally wouldn’t reach for these straight, although I could see myself drinking the Appleton Estate Signature neat depending on the mood.

Appleton is Jamaican rum, and Jamaican rum is known for having more of a funky, grassy, sometimes fruity character. This is something you really have to taste to understand. “Funk” is one of those terms you hear constantly in the rum world, and it can mean different things depending on the rum.

These are great bottles to have around when you want to make cocktails without using something expensive that you’d rather drink neat.

Diplomatico

Next is Diplomatico.
I really like this one. It’s a great entry point for someone who wants to start drinking rum neat or on the rocks. It has a little bit of smokiness and a very approachable flavor profile.

It does contain added sugar, which is something worth knowing when getting into rum. I personally wouldn’t want to drink it all night for that reason, but I think it’s a very enjoyable rum and a good introduction to sipping rum.

Appleton Estate 12 Year Rare Casks
Next is the Appleton Estate 12 Year Rare Casks.
This is from the same Jamaican producer as the Signature, but obviously a completely different experience. I haven’t opened this one yet, but I’ve heard very good things about it and expect it to be significantly more interesting as a sipping rum.

I’m looking forward to getting into this bottle.

Rhum J.M.

Now we get into one of my favorites to talk about: Rhum J.M.

This is an agricole-style rum, meaning the spirit is made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than the more traditional molasses.

A very simple way to think about it:

Traditional rum → sugarcane → sugar production → molasses → fermentation → rum

Agricole rum → fresh sugarcane juice → fermentation → rum

It’s almost like comparing a spirit made from the original ingredient to one made from a byproduct of the sugar-making process.

This particular rum comes from Martinique, where the volcanic terroir and fresh sugarcane give it a very distinctive character.

To me, it tastes incredibly fresh and grassy, with an earthy/mineral quality and a kind of volcanic character. I hesitate to call it “smoky” because it isn’t really smoky in the same way whiskey or a peated Scotch is.

This was one of the bottles that really showed me how different rum can be from one bottle to another.

Flor de Caña
Next is Flor de Caña from Nicaragua.
This is a very clean, smooth, straightforward rum and is known for having no added sugar.
If you’re someone who wants to understand what a relatively “clean” rum tastes like without a lot of added sweetness, this is a good one to try.

It’s not necessarily trying to overwhelm you with flavors. It’s just an easy-drinking rum that lets the base spirit speak for itself.

El Dorado 12 & 15

Then we have the El Dorados.

Both of these are fantastic sipping rums, and I would absolutely recommend either one to someone who wants to start drinking rum neat.

And these aren’t even the crazy stuff from El Dorado. There are much more specialized bottles from their various stills and cask selections.

One thing that makes El Dorado especially interesting is the Demerara rum tradition from Guyana. Their distillery, Demerara Distillers Limited, operates historic stills, including the famous wooden stills used to produce distinctive styles such as Enmore and Port Mourant.

So you can get into rum far beyond simply “12-year-old rum” or “15-year-old rum.” The still, fermentation, distillation method, cask, and aging can all dramatically change the final product.

As for these two:

The 12 Year is more fruity and approachable to me.

The 15 Year is deeper, darker, and more chocolatey.

Both are extremely smooth and fantastic neat.
If someone told me they wanted to buy one bottle to understand why people actually sip rum, I’d probably point them toward one of these.

Novo Fogo Cachaça

In the back, in the clear bottle, I included a Brazilian spirit called Novo Fogo.

It’s pronounced roughly “Novo Fogo,” and this is where things get interesting.

It is made from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice, similar to agricole rum, but because it is produced in Brazil and falls under Brazil’s legal definition, it is called cachaça rather than rum.

This one is incredibly clean tasting to me.
If you want that fresh sugarcane/grassiness without a bunch of other heavy flavors, this is a really interesting bottle to try.

Cachaça is traditionally used to make a caipirinha, which is basically cachaça, lime, sugar, and ice. I actually prefer mine with very little or no added sugar.

It is dangerously easy to drink.

Flor de Caña 12

Next is the Flor de Caña 12.
I haven’t opened this one yet, so obviously I can’t give you a tasting note.

This isn’t really a ranking because I don’t like ranking rums I haven’t all tasted yet — and honestly, I don’t think I’ve tasted enough rum to make some definitive ranking anyway.

But based on what I’ve heard, I’m expecting this to be another very smooth bottle with a different profile from the other rums here.

Ron Zacapa 23

Then we have Ron Zacapa 23 from Guatemala.
This is one of my favorites so far.

To me, I get a really nice combination of butterscotch and banana, with a smooth, rich character.

It’s sweet and approachable without being so sweet that I feel like I can only have one glass. I could easily see myself drinking two or three glasses of this over an evening.

This is another bottle I’d recommend to someone who’s moving from cocktails into sipping rum.

Foursquare

And finally, the two Foursquare bottles.
These are both from Barbados and both are over 61% ABV.

They’re also both exceptional cask selections.
I haven’t opened either of these yet. These are the bottles I’m probably going to hold onto for a long time, or open for a special occasion.
Foursquare is one of the producers that really got me interested in the more serious side of rum. They have a reputation for producing relatively dry, complex rums without relying heavily on added sugar.

Foursquare also produces Doorly’s, which is another great way to explore Barbadian rum without spending as much money. You can find Doorly’s at places like Total Wine in states where liquor sales are available through those stores.

And yes, I know someone is going to say it:
Please don’t mix the Foursquare. 😂
I wouldn’t mix these, Zacapa, or the El Dorados either.

But rules are meant to be bent. Do whatever you want with your own bottle.
Just maybe don’t use a $300+ Foursquare for a rum & Coke.

Honorable Mentions:

Bumbu
Bumbu is very banana-and-vanilla-forward and tastes more like a sweet, heavy liqueur to me.
It’s actually very good for what it is, but I personally couldn’t drink it all night because it’s too sweet.

Although… I have done exactly that once. 😂
Definitely worth trying if you like sweeter spirits.

Barbancourt 8 Year / 5 Star
This is a Haitian rum, and another interesting one because it is made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses.

I actually finished this bottle, so I don’t have the tasting notes fresh enough in my head to give it a fair review.

I remember enjoying it more in mixed drinks, though they recommend it as a sipping rum as well. I remember getting some tobacco and honey characteristics.

I’d definitely like to revisit it at some point and taste it properly.

The Big Thing I’ve Learned About Rum

The biggest thing I’ve learned so far is that rum isn’t really one category of flavor.
You can have Jamaican rum with heavy funk.
Martinican agricole with grassy, earthy sugarcane character.
Brazilian cachaça.
Guyana’s dark and distinctive Demerara rums.
Barbadian rums that can be dry, complex, and cask-driven.
Spanish-influenced styles that are often smoother and sweeter.

And then you can start getting into different stills, fermentation methods, barrels, ages, single casks, blends, and independent bottlers.
That’s what has made rum so interesting to me.
I’m still very much learning, but that’s also the fun part.

Smuggler’s Cove

I’ve also included pictures of the Smuggler’s Cove book.

If you’re getting seriously interested in rum, this is one of the books I’d recommend picking up. It covers rum history, different styles and regions, and has a ton of cocktails you can make with different types of rum.

It’s basically become my go-to reference as I’ve started exploring more bottles.
So that’s my collection and my experience so far.

For someone completely new to rum, what bottles would you recommend I try next?

And if you disagree with anything I’ve said above, tell me — I’m here to learn. I’m especially interested in hearing what experienced rum drinkers think a newcomer absolutely needs to try.

How to make my murder mystery party more interesting

Me and my friend group (there's 15 of us) did a murder mystery party last year, and it was a lot of fun, so this year I've decided to host another for my birthday. The only thing I'm struggling with is how to make it more interesting because I don't want a simple sit down and talk. I want my guests to have to get up and possibly have to do tasks. But I haven't found a kit that's like this that also fits into my price range. So, if anyone's struggled with this in the past, what did you do?

My husband unilaterally agreed/decided to host his family’s reunion in our yard.its in exactly 14 days & I’m not sure he understands what hosting a part entails. HELP!!!!

A little background- we bought this place at the end of last spring. It’s needed work and still needs a lot of work. I would have preferred to take this on next year when we are a little more prepared to host. The land is why we bought the place, we have ten acres and it can’t be seen from the road so there is a lot of privacy.

He loves his family and wants to do this. However, we sort of weren’t in the best financial position to do it but here we are. Myhusband had never heard that the hosts provide the protein. We have no games for anyone to play, a drink station, a trash plan, plates cups utensils, no decorations. He did secure the taco bar finally and that’s being catered. No porta potty rental at this point and our septic can’t handle 30-50 people using it. Some guests may or may not camp, don’t have a list of who those are. I imagine they’ll want to shower and our shower is atrocious and outdated. We have no rain contingency plan. I did get a 20x20 party tent, 8 tables and chairs and a bouncy house for the kids. But that’s it. I feel a ton of pressure now bc it’s two weekends away and I don’t think he’s considered any of the things I feel like go into party planning to be a good host. I’m looking for help in the form of either being able to show him this thread so maybe he might see that there is a little more to it. Or help for me, do I need to make more food or buy alcohol and lemonade and bug spray and what else? What if it rains? We don’t have a party speaker loud enough for karaoke for this many speaker. How do we save the day in two weeks?

Games for silly grown ups?

Help! Anyone know any fun yard games?

Having my first party ever- pirate themed 30th Birthday party.

About 15 guests, from several different times of my life, so we have groups that don't know eachother. However, they are all my friends, so they are all buffoons.

Its next weekend and I think doing yard games like obstacle courses or survivor-style challenges would go really well but I'm struggling to come up with games and im really worried about it being awkward.

I am planning the family "young adult" party and I need help finding cheap prizes.

Hi! My family has a Christmas reunion every year. I have a group of about 30 people, ranging from 15-30 in ages. We've only been doing this "young adult" party for the last few years because we got sick of being in the kids party and doing activities that didn't interest us. It's been a flop until last year when I planned a small scavenger hunt. It seemed to interest the majority of people but the prizes did not. I planned it all pretty last minute so it was some cheap garbage really. Some fidget toys and phone stands and a bunch of chapstick. I want to get people more into this year so I need help with prizes.

I have 6 teams of about 4 to 5 people in each. I've come up with $10 gift cards for the winning team, and some candy for the losing team. But I need to fill in the rest of the teams with something they could win. I've thought about funny socks and chargers as well.

Any ideas?

I also wouldn't mind a hand with scavenger hunt planning if anyone has ideas. Like last year, they are going to be leaving our Airbnb to go around town to find the hidden clues. I had everything in a 2 block radius but I think I'll have it more spread out this time. I used Polaroid photos as clues for the hunt last year but I want to branch out from that as well. Any help would be appreciated!
