All my Plein Airs from the Lost Sierra Paint Out

Here’s all the paintings I did up in Quincy CA for the Lost Sierra plein air paint out, a 4 day event. At the end, each artist picks their best two for showing and judging for awards. I was caught between the waterfall and the trees painting for my second, with the mountain scene being selected.

Sorry for some of the odd photos, I had to do framing from my campsite.

The between-the-trees painting looked great with the light I had while painting, but changed and looked different framed, so I went with the waterfall. I guess I’m glad I did, the waterfall painting ended up getting a ribbon!

The mountain painting was the biggest plein air I’ve tried, 20x16. It’s hard to tackle a big canvas when you’re not sure how it will turn out, easier to wipe an away an 8x10 stinker and start over after 30 minutes when it’s obvious.

The painting of the shed with the mountains.. I’m not sure why it didn’t turn out, let me know any critiques.
Second to last was a 90 minute “quick draw.”

Also, tried my first figure painting in the wild.

I’m exhausted 😅

Let me know what you think!

First plein air of the year

I'm totally jealous of those of you who have already been out painting! Today was the 1st time my schedule and the weather lined up.

This is one of the oldest existing buildings in my town. It's an old mine building of some sort.

DIY box

Hey team,

New to this. Any fun plain air box’s getting around?

There are obviously a few good professional options costing 200-500 AUD, but I’m considering a DIY take in the meantime.

I’ll be taking this in a 100km overnight bike ride.

Sunset Over Madisonville, 12" x 16"

We had planned on painting the lighthouse tonight, but there was a bit more water than I felt like driving through trying to get there. So we painted the sunset over the Tchefuncte instead.

Beach plein air

Don’t love it but couldn’t stay out any longer, hands got way too cold lol. Lesson learned bringing gloves next time. Also constantly changing light is rough! Might try to fix it up indoors

Oil on canvas, 1.5hr

perfect little beach sesh

My wife and I had a quick overnight trip to Amagansett on Long Island to go see a music show and gladly remembered to bring my plein air set up. Before we headed back to the city I was able to get a really nice plein air beach session in. I love painting on the beach (even if the tripod ball head doesn't :D ) It's a fun challenge to work through the perspective of a long beach so I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Plein Air New Bern, North Carolina

Just Back from Plein Air New Bern where I won two awards for my work, The first was the Best Historical Award for my painting 'Given Back to the Earth', of The Old Burying Ground in Beaufort. The cemetery was started in the early 1700's.

The last day of the competition was the 2 hour quick draw. There were only two awards in the professional category 1st and 2nd place and my painting 'Delivery Yard' won 2nd place. A big thank you to the Judge, Russell Jewell and to the organizers. Congratulations to the other award winners.
