Best place to move to for a 25M?

Hey all!

Currently I have a condo in Apple Valley and absolutely hate it here. Its loud, walking around is so difficult, the food is boring, and I get gross looks all the time (I'm African). I was going to sell my condo this fall and move into St. Paul, but not fully sure where. We're looking at homes around $250k or less. Not super big into night life or club/bar scene, but I definitely want to get out more and make more friends/connect with my community. I'm single and have 2 cats. Definitely looking at a fixer-upper for budget and self fulfillment reasons. I was told to avoid South St. Paul because its smelly (idk what that means).

Any recommendations are very helpful!

Mayor gave my kid a flag!

We showed up to the parade late. Got to the park just as her car was stopping and she waved to my kid and asked if he wanted a flag.

He said “yes!” And jumped out of the wagon to go to her.

Very nice of her to offer, thank you!

Happy 4th everyone!

Moving from Duluth - Advice on neighborhoods & where to find housing

Hi all!

I graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth last year and after living up here for 5 years I am looking to move down to the metro area with my friend this August/September! We are both young women and are looking for a good neighborhood with easy access to parks / green spaces.

We are both pretty clueless about the metro area, neither of us grew up in or around it so any and all advice would be appreciated about good neighboorhoods, good parks, and just general advice about moving there. Thanks!

Can anyone confirm this is still there?

When I lived in the Selby/Dale neighborhood, my daughter and I used to see this when we went for walks.

It was in an area bordered by Dale, Holly, Arundel and Selby.

I'd like to think that Jeffery S is still Pimp Doggin'

Rehome my dogs

I can no longer care for my dogs after a difficult breakup and i need to try to rehome them. I have a German shepherd who is 7 years old (he’s a quarter husky), and a pure bred border collie who’s s five years old. The shepherd is a male and the collie is a female and they are both fixed and spayed and vaccinated.

Please let me know how I can rehome them. The collie needs a ton of stimulation and the shepherd is approaching his senior years. They are good dogs.

found cat - seeking help or advice

We already have 2 cats and don’t have capacity for this guy. foundnon snelling and university (so he’s named Spruce for now). he’s super sweet and around 6 months. he’s intact and has no chip, underweight. if anyone is able to foster him before we find another place for him that would be much appreciated- or any shelters or rescues you know that have immediate openings. we have been contacting places but the holiday weekend is a barrier obviously. in the meantime we could help with food, litter and any vetting costs. we are hoping to get a low cost neuter and will pay to get him vetted since he does have scratches and some weird lumps if we can’t find a place soon. any suggestions welcome. see comments for photos!

Hosting an exchange student

We will be hosting an exchange student this year. I’m wondering if anyone has hosted a student that attended Central or Highland? I’m curious how their experience was. Central is our zoned school but we are right on the border so could make either work (if HPHS has spots). Our coordinator mentioned HPHS is smaller so tends to be easier for exchange students to navigate, but I know Central would be a great experience as well.

Tell me the biggest cons of moving here

I'm moving out of Dallas, TX when my lease is up in february, without total certainty yet on exactly where, but St. Paul is one of my main two options. I've done a lot of thinking but am finding it really hard to choose, so I've figured that the best way to make a definitive choice is to learn something that's a dealbreaker.

Here's some additional context about me:

- i'm a 30 y/o single gay man and will be moving alone and seeking an affordable studio apartment

- one of my motivations to move is to be in colder weather, where it actually snows and it's GOOD snow, and where there's actual infrastructure for when it does snow

- another is that I want to be in a place with a lot of good history and beauty. I really do not find the dallas area beautiful at all

- I cant drive so good public transportation is a must

- I work at target and will hopefully be able to get transferred, but if not i'll obviously be in need of work

- finally, my other main option is Buffalo, NY

So, if you like (or if it's even possible), go ahead and do your best to convince me NOT to move here!

What are some things I absolutely should know before I move out?

I’m headed to Macalester this fall after falling in love with the school and the Twin Cities, but I was really just wondering what are some things that are a “must know” for someone moving out?

I’ve lived in the San Diego area my entire life and haven’t ever really experienced a truly cold winter in my life, but I’m fully expecting it to be brutal, although I’ll be home for most of January.

What are the best spots to eat? What are some fun things to do when the weather is actively trying to kill you? What things might I not be expecting that I should know? I’m honestly just looking for as much input as possible to prepare for next month when I move out. I’m genuinely so excited to make the move!

Ring resizing

I inherited my grandmother's engagement ring, a piece that was made by my great-grandfather. It's been in my possession as my engagement ring for years, but I recently lost a bunch of weight due to taking care of my health and whatnot and now that ring is way too big for my suddenly slenderized fingers.

This piece is deeply important to me. My grandmother died a few short months after I got married, and we were very close. I never even met my great-grandfather, who was long gone by the time I came around. I don't feel great about trusting this to just anyone.

So with that in mind, are there any recs to where I can take this? I just need it to be a little smaller, and maybe get it shined up a little bit. Saint Paul would be preferred but I can trek out to Roseville or the like if need be. Thanks in advance!

Women’s Health Provider with Functional Medicine Interest?

Possibly a long shot, but can anybody recommend a women’s health provider who…

1.) Is in Saint Paul;
2.) Is at a smaller, independent clinic (rather than part of a behemoth organization);
3.) Is a woman herself;
4.) Has an interest in functional medicine;
5.) Is flexible and willing to try new things;
6.) Will talk to knowledgeable patients as equals; and
7.) Takes insurance?

I’m flexible on type of practitioner, and would consider an MD, NP, DO, etc — anybody who can both order labs & write prescriptions as needed.

Last minute 5year old birthday

My family and I have recently moved into the Merriam park neighborhood in St. Paul. Our daughter turns 5 the last weekend of July.

Does anybody have any semi-last minute birthday party host locations they would or could recommend? Our house is kind of a disaster still, it’s a fixer upper, and the backyard is taken up by new garage construction. So we’re pretty set on just setting something up near a kids playground at a park, but with a lot of places like that already being reserved, does anyone know of any first come first serve style spots for parks that are local or close to local where we could set up a small; maybe 10-15 person gathering for a couple hours?

Best Cake Bakeries

Just moved to the area and am looking for a bakery. Would love somewhere to be able to go in and pick up cupcakes or cake slices from a display case as well as order birthday cakes from. Doesn’t need to be fancy just needs to be good. Love bakeries that do classic American buttercream. Thanks.
