Is Alvin Ords actually open?

Tried going today at noon and there was a sign that said "currently closed". Maybe I missed something but I thought they reopened?

Hey San Marcos Goths/Alternative Folks, This is For You

I'm currently updating the Texas Alternative Scenes Map and focusing on college towns like San Marcos. So tell me, what are some of the best hidden spots where y'all like to hang out, shop for music or clothes, or see concerts? They don't have to be explicitly goth but they should have a darker/alternative aesthetic or crowd.

Idiocy

Parents, grandparents, and the year-round idiots on Hopkins today brought it to a new level today. Blocking the box, stopping ON THE TRAIN TRACKS, moving at a glacial pace, refusing to check their mirrors, cutting into wherever they Want To. These assholes were so lucky that The Train didn’t make an appearance for their display disdain for their lives and everyone else’s. Can’t wait to meet the kids they just dropped off! I’m sure they’re all super considerate individuals!

Move-in and graduation weekend(s)

There’s always plenty of justifiable complaints about how students drive around San Marcos, but can we take a moment to shoutout the parents?! Not a blinker as far as the eye can see, sitting in a turn lane just to cut off everyone else last minute because they want to go straight instead, stopping in the middle of the street to check their maps on where to go instead of just pulling into a parking lot… Lord, I get it now why these students don’t drive well either! Texas State really brings us the cream of the crop with their 91% acceptance rate. Keep ‘em coming too I guess since they increase enrollment each year lmfao.

House plants 🪴

Hello y’all! I’m looking for a nice houseplant for my apartment. I’d really like to support a small business that sells plants here in San Marcos, rather than buying from a larger corporation. If anyone has any recommendations, I’d greatly appreciate it! 🌿

Update:

Thank you for all the amazing suggestions that you all have given.

Anyone know of a good gunstore with decent prices nearby?

I'm hoping to pick up a few firearms in the next few months. Does anyone here know a good place? I don't need anything fancy. Just a chill place with prices that aren't bordering on extortion.

Onesupport

Has anyone worked for this company? They hired me but the process has taken weeks and then they ghosted me. I still get weekly emails confirming my offer but it’s automated so 🤷🏼‍♀️ Not sure if this is a scam.

Feelings about San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter?

I’ve lived in San Mo for six years, recently moved into an apartment complex that is occupied by so many stray cats. i’ve watched the same cat give birth twice, pregnant again. i was thinking about getting the kittens and some of the friendlier cats into the shelter for a better life, but i’ve heard wishy washy things about the local animal shelter.

i’m wondering if anyone can share their experience, their thoughts, or recommendations.

Thoughts on Elevation on Post Road?

I am moving to San Mo from 8 hours away and elevation on post rd seemed the best option for the price but everyone I’ve talked to hasn’t heard of it or had anything to say. I move in Monday so I’m just curious

Hair Salon That Does Layered Hairstyles?

Hey! I haven’t gotten my hair cut professionally in about 5 years, so I have no idea where to go. I’m interested in getting a hair cut with a lot of layers, similar or exactly like a wolf cut. I’ve had bad experiences in the past, so if I’m going to spend money on it, I really want to make sure it’s going to look good. Anyone have any places they recommend? (Photos pulled from Pinterest of what I’m kind of looking for)

CM Allen Homes (affordable housing) - Flock Cameras

Last week I made a post regarding Flock cameras surrounding every entry and exit of an affordable housing complex named Riverstone Apartments. Later that week I was curious and decided to check if this same thing was going on at any other affordable housing in San Marcos and I found that CM Allen Homes (San Marcos Housing Authority) off of River Road (across from the SM Animal Shelter) also has Flock cameras at every entry and exit onto their property.

So once again I'm curious if there any residents who are or weren't aware until today that those cameras are there spying on you 24/7 if you decide you'd like to enter or exit your own housing. In either case is there anything in your lease which indicates you will be recorded at all times if you exit or enter the premises? Are you able to say or do you know when these cameras were put up?

For anyone, why do you think that some affordable housing complexes here have Flock surveillance systems surrounding them? Do any of you ever deliver to these areas and see the cameras and have second thoughts about going there?

Just so that everyone is on the same page, or if you've not had the bandwidth to pay attention, here are some links from various leaning folks (this is an issue that all sides agree is terrible for privacy and freedom) talking about what Flock cameras are and why you should care:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xSes4VMVyo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2-bxmWOH4U

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnBPhelCdWE

In short, the cameras aren't just license plate readers, they gather all data that is within its view and some models are now gathering all radio data (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, car sensors) to pair with the car or person in its view and create a profile that is easily searchable by whoever has access to the data.

Anyway, these cameras were also not on the public map that shows where people have seen Flock cameras so that needs to be updated. If anyone else reading this is aware of or thinks there are Flock cameras they have seen that have gone up and also aren't on the Deflock map just drop an address or name of a neighborhood so someone can check and add it.

Are there any indoor malls around here?

San Marcos is a decent halfway point between me and my friend and we wanted to go shopping. We’re lowkey sick of the Outlet mall though (plus it’s hot), and I can’t seem to find any indoor malls like Lakeline (Austin) or North Star (San Antonio). Do they exist here or is it just Tanger and the other one? 😭
