Silicone hand prosthetics made and applied by me to a friend of mine for a Frankenstein Monster makeup photo shoot . These hand prosthetics are available on my Etsy shop. I’m on Instagram @mike_mccoy_creations and @death_rattle_fx
if anyone wants to provide any tips perhaps? 😇 it looks too much like a sci fi ghoul from a corny early 2000s video game - 3d printed skull and some polymer clay. since the latest photo i’ve mixed torn up toilet paper with glue and painted black to create scabs for the little feller but unfortunately didn’t get a photo before vacation
Hii!! I’m a student artist, currently studying special effects makeup un university and for my final project of my second year I created a prosthetic and body paint transformation of my model into a character from within the sleep token universe, taking elements from vessels mask, song lyric interpretation, understanding of runes and mythology and the overall lore.
I have adored Sleep Tokens work for quite a few years now and throughout this project, I really got to dive even deeper than I had before into the universe and just have an even bigger appreciation for them than I had before.
This look was made up of x1 silicone mask prosthetic, x1 bondo prosthetic chest piece x2 gelatine rune prosthetics and x2 bondo rune prosthetics- all handmade and applied by me
It may be hard to see, but I also incorporated the rune formula for ‘Teeth Of God, Blood Of Man’ written down the arms.
I hope you all enjoy this offering 🖤
Okay so it has been my dream since I was little to make a silicone mermaid tail, but I’m wanting it to be movie grade prosthetic. I’m telling you I sit up at night thinking about making this and how I’m going to do it, I’m obsessed. This will be a long post about my ideas for this tail. If you have better suggestions please let me know
First off the silicone I want to use for this will be SORTA-clear 37. I know this is not usually used in tails because it’s not all that stretchy like dragon skin, but I think that will be fine because I don’t want any kind of resemblance of legs poking through the tail, it will help with propulsion, and will help with realism for the fluke
I will make a fiberglass live casting of my legs and part of my torso, then start sculpting the entirety of the tail on top of it hanging from my metal rig. Then I will make a mold of the clay tail and connected fiberglass torso (likely will be a two part mold)
Once the tail mold is done, I will remove all the clay to repurpose my live cast of my legs as a positive core inside the tail mold so the tail will literally fit like a glove.
One important step for this is when I’m ready to cast the tail, the will need to be some kind of strong stretchy fabric that is cast inside of it so when it cures I will be able to start sewing on scales which will be made of resin with a little bit of smooth ons resin flexiblizer to make them a little more durable/flexible/but still hard and scale like.
Due to the hardness of the silicone, I might not need propulsion like a monofin. But I do know this tail will be extremely heavy. I thought about maybe using something like a pool noodle in the core of the tail between my feet and fluke as it’s flexible, won’t snap, and floats.
Problems I haven’t worked out is how I will get this fabric casted in the silicone, and how will I pour this two part mold for this tail, will I pour some on each part let it get tacky and then pour some more and smush the mold together??? Like idek.
Hi everyone!
Not sure if this would be the right place to ask but I wanted to ask is there any blood body paint or fake blood that won't transfer and maybe dries?
I'll be at a con for a whole day and I need to create the effect of feet covered in blood (I've attached a reference!) Is there a way I can create the effect and make sure it won't transfer anywhere? I'll be wearing sandals through the con, so I won't be dripping blood all over the floor!
I've tried mehron blood before but it's incredibly sticky and transfers everywhere. I saw a method where someone used EBA blood and sprayed final seal? Is that the way to go? I've considered making blood-covered tights and I've asked in other subreddits, but I got a lot of mixed advice and methods.
Just to add some details: I'm based in Australia so anything that's accessible here!
Hopefully, that's enough details and thanks for reading!
Undead Silicone Hand Prosthetics made and applied by me, applied to myself (one handed for this application) 🙃
Silicone zombie hand prosthetics, available for purchase soon in pairs.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xwXGLvIWXE0 this one too, mainly the rising suspenseful sfx at the start but the rest is useful too. Is there a particular pack where i can find these?
Zombie makeup I did for the Buffalo Horror Garage Sale in May. Face Prosthetic by Woochie FX, Hand Prosthetics by Infected FX, all foam latex
I wanted to create a character that looked like a vintage beauty icon who refused to fade away. This is a self-portrait, and every prosthetic, every wound, and every detail of the SFX makeup was sculpted, applied, and painted by me on myself.
One of the things I love most about SFX is that it lets you tell a story without saying a word. My goal wasn’t just to make something “gory”—I wanted her to feel like someone who was once glamorous, but now exists somewhere between beauty and decay.
I’d genuinely love to hear what story this character tells you before I tell you mine.
Hello!!
My friend and I did several attempts of trying to make a half face life cast with alginate and trying to figure out where we went wrong.
The first try I think we didn’t use enough alginate (sort of just used enough to cover face) and also let it dry before adding the plaster, and let each layer of plaster dry in between (and did about 4-5 layers of plaster) Once the plaster dried we tried to take it off and the alginate just completely fell apart and also out of the plaster cast.
The next two tries ended up somewhat similarly with the alginate mold being very wet (which might be normal??) but also flimsy and falling to a few pieces and not staying in with the plaster cast. We tried using more alginate but might have messed up by putting more alginate on after some had dried already?
We are thinking that the solution might be to just use a TON of alginate right at the beginning and starting with the plaster right away after that.
Wondering if anyone had any suggestions to help!! 🙏🙏🙏
We are planning on using hydro cal in the alginate negative mold after wards, then creating another negative mold with either more hydro cal or plaster of Paris? Then finally pouring a liquid latex into the negative mold to make a realistic mask!!
Some old age makeups.

I'm making a decapitated head for a production of Salomé, and have started with a plaster cast of the actor's face. I was planning to build on it with air dry clay to smooth and make detailed features. I'm wondering what I can put on top to make the whole thing durable/last for many performances?
Really, any advice is helpful! I've made masks and puppets before, but never a full 3D head.
Hi, sorry if not the right place, but I'm need recommendations for my situation.
I have done hobby FX makeup for halloween many times, and got pretty good at it, but I need to do something better and more durable.
I am in a Limp Bizkit cover band, and need to do some Wes Borland style makeup. I need something that will last several hours, without smudging onto my gear, cracking or sweating off. I will be on stage of course, but also think I will need to do this at home, before going to the gig and loading up. I imagine that I will not be able to do this at the gig. So I need something durable and that won't look like crap by the time I'm on stage.
I included an image of the look I plan to do first. Of course, budget is a concern and getting large quantities of alcohol activated makeup seems costly, and I worry if it will be opaque enough.
I likely will just need to do the neck up, so I don't need enough to do my whole body.
Water activated seems like an obvious bad choice.
Grease makeup seems like it will be super thick and cause me to sweat more.
I'd appreciate some help and insight. I have tried to do some research, but my knowledge is very limited. ELI5 please
Hi all! I originally shared this over on r/Filmmakers, but I thought I should share it here as well for the more special effects oriented community.
I can't crosspost videos here, so check it out at the original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Filmmakers/comments/1uf6nhh/behind_the_scenes_testing_a_practical_blood_squib/
This is an early proof of concept for an upcoming short film involving around a dozen practical blood squibs. This is a small-scale test/demo with two squibs to evaluate and refine the aesthetics. As you can see, I think a bit more blood and some down feathers bursting out would improve the visual, but so far I'm happy with how it's coming together.
We chose a real down parka because it suited the character and provided enough room to conceal multiple effects. We've also acquired more than ten identical used parkas for testing, filming and at least 3 takes of the stunt.
Disclaimer - I am qualified and trained to purchase and operate pyrotechnics and I've been building blood squibs on and off over the last few years. Do not try this at home unless you have received proper training and/or licensing depending on your country.
I'd love to hear any thoughts or suggestions. Some questions from my side:
Thanks a lot 😄
Watermelon pulp makes convincing raw ground beef! Got my spouse good with this one! (White flecks are watermelon seeds, and green flecks are mint and a bit of cucumber)
