Now that the Silent Hill revival is officially complete, what are your thoughts?

Back in 2022, Konami officially revealed that the Silent Hill franchise was making a big comeback. Not only we're we getting four new games (and whatever Ascension was), but also a new movie. With the recent release of Townfall, the revival has officially been completed. What are your thoughts on each project and how would you rank them? For me:

06.) Ascension

This is, without question, the single worst thing to ever come out of this franchise. The story was nonsensical, the acting was poor, the dialogue was terrible, the microtransactions were insulting and the fact that the only people's decisions that mattered were the ones who paid the most money was just the cherry on top of this crap sundae. Ascenison was the absolute worst way Konami could have brought this franchise back and it needs to be forgotten about as quickly as possible.

1/10

05.) Return to Silent Hill

The trailers didn't look encouraging at all, but the final film turned out to be even worse than I expected. This is a complete bastardization of Silent Hill 2's incredible narrative and a horrible adaptation, but also just a really dull, poorly made horror movie in its own right. Maybe someday we'll get a good Silent Hill film but Return to Silent Hill is anything but.

1.5/10

04.) The Short Message

I appreciate that this game is completely free to play, but that's where my praise for it ends. The story is well-intentioned with its approach to serious topics, but the execution is silly, over the top and too ham-fisted to take seriously or get engaged with. The gameplay mostly consists of walking around empty environments solving dull puzzles and then there's the chase sequences. Oh lord, the chase sequences. These are either boring with little tension, or frustrating and tedious with no in between. The final chase sequence in particular is so poorly and maddeningly designed that I never want to play The Short Message again.

3/10

03.) Townfall

This was a really solid game with an engaging story, terrific atmosphere, fun exploration and some good monster designs. The stealth unfortunately can get pretty tedious as it's extremely basic in its design and grows stale pretty fast. Some of the puzzles, while creative, are also too vague for their own good and can be annoyingly unclear as a result. Despite these shortcomings, Townfall is still a worthy addition to this franchise.

8/10

02.) Silent Hill f

The first great original entry this franchise has had in a long time. The story is really trippy and interesting, the atmosphere is excellent, the puzzles are creative, the monsters are unsettling, the boss battles are really well done, and the environments are all really memorable. There's also a lot of replay value here as New Game Plus mixes up the game in some really unique ways. The only real downside is how excessive the combat can be, as it really starts to wear out its welcome by the end, despite being well designed. Still, Silent Hill f proves that this franchise is still capable of producing strong original material.

9/10

01.) Silent Hill 2 Remake

I didn't think Bloober Team could possibly improve upon perfection, but in some ways (not all), they did. Nearly everything I loved about the OG is here but has been expanded on and remixed in some really clever ways. The monsters are all great, the combat is the best of the series imo, the puzzles are excellent, the atmosphere is superb and this is just an all-around fantastic recreation of one of gaming's greatest masterpieces. Silent Hill 2 is easily one of the greatest remakes of all time as far as I'm concerned.

Silent Hill 1 Remake - story and level expansion speculations

Now that the remake of silent hill 1 is likely to be the next game released, I'm curious to hear other fans' theories on how the story and levels will be expanded and what new areas we could potentially explore. I've found myself daydreaming about this a lot lately. I'll add my ideas and speculation in a comment.

I saw this image posted somewhere else and it made me wonder, why isn't Silent Hill even half as close to Resident Evil? There's 11 different SH games that people can buy it's not like Dead Space with only 4

I loved Townfall but the cover image is awful

Like the title states, I thought Townfall was a fantastic entry to the franchise as a fan for the last 15+ years. I am finding a lot of opinions online a little reductive for all the Revival era games. I personally think the Post-Team Silent era was the roughest state the games in this franchise have suffered. As much as people don't like f & Townfall, personally I have a hard time seeing how Origins, Homecoming, or Downpour are better. From a storytelling perspective those games are far inferior to the Revival era IMO. Shattered Memories is a cut above those games writing wise for me, but I still think it has some issues. I am pretty open-minded to this series going in any direction it sees creatively fit. My only minor belief is that the games should contain some sense of supernatural reality and not have the events purely in the minds of the characters. The only game in the whole franchise that actually seemed to do that was Silent Hill: the Short Message.

Townfall and f both took creative risks, many more risks than the games previous did, and both games benefitted greatly from it. Townfall is probably my 4th or 5th favourite Silent Hill game now.

However, the cover image is just absolutely horrible. Silent Hill 2 Remake already had bad "Marvelized" cover design, but this game blows that out of the water in terms of poor design. Honestly, the cover of Townfall with Simon on his CRTV looks AI generated there is no better way to put it. It's one of the worst pieces of video game cover art I've ever seen, rivaling the ICO North American PS2 cover. We've gotten some bad cover art in this series, the North American cover of SH1 immediately comes to mind, but this just takes the cake for me. The sad part is that the Steelbook cover is significantly better, even just the placeholder art of the waves and the title is also significantly better. Oh well, at least Steam lets you change the cover art thankfully.

P.T. (Silent Hills) has just been ported to PC!

This is not an emulation or a fan remake! The game has been reverse engineered and ported for PC. You'd need the original game ROM to play it.

Port features:

  • Extensive graphical settings. You can make the game look like just how it was on PS4 or you can unlock framerate, change resolution, enable hi res textures, Ray Tracing and DLSS/FSR/XeSS.
  • A proper photo mode.
  • Museum mode where you can view models, replay dialogues and cutscenes.
  • The ability to explore the town featured in the end game teaser.
  • New Game+ mode featuring restored content which had been cut from the original game.
  • Experimental VR mode.

You can download it from here: https://github.com/LoreanXavier/pt-pc/releases/tag/v1.0.1

For the SH1 Remake, how would you feel about them adding a reference/connection to SHf in this room?

This isn't Silent Hill

I'm currently playing through this Silent Hill game, and honestly, what were the developers even thinking? Yeah sure there may be fog, monsters, and a town, but this game has no connection at all to the occult storyline of 1, 3, and 4.

Where is the cult? Where is all the occult lore of Silent Hill? Where are Alessa and God?

This game is basically just man with amnesia/mysterious past explores the town looking for a woman, with a shallow and uninteresting story about grief and trauma thrown in. How does this game relate to Silent Hill at all?

Pic unrelated, I'm referring to Silent Hill 2.

I think Townfall will be a cult classic

It may not be popular now, but I feel like it will gradually be adored as time goes on.

Personally, I understand the criticisms surrounding the stealth mechanics. If the game was going to force us into a particular playing style, it should have made it far smoother and satisfying.

Than I thought about it for a bit; this isnt metal gear or splinter cell, the stealth mechanics were never going to be perfect. Because they weren't meant to be. Most of the anxiety and dread would immediately disappear if you were able to explore your surroundings like a ninja blending into the shadows. The jank IS the experience.

Leople seem to forget that Silent Hill 2 wasnt universally loved. GameSpot gave it a 7.7 and many reviewers disliked the camera and combat. Now, it's considered one of the best games ever made.

Most of the issues people have with this game can be fixed with patches, i wouldn't change anything with the story or the major areas. Some fine tuning of certain aspects could go a long way with pleasing the crowd, but I feel like it would be a mistake long-term, allowing people to blast through would take away much of the anxiety inducing experience. Let people get frustrated as they learn how to play the game.

Story was fairly unique compared to other silent hills. it does fall into the same tropes as most of the silent hill games. However, It does enough to differentiate itself that I do feel like it will be constantly revisited as time goes on. People will start figuring out the game and share their guides and tips online, which would make the game more and more accessible.

Overall, this game gets unnecessary hate and im pretty disappointed with its sales performance. Compared to f, I think Konami will interpret this as people being more receptive to more action oriented games rather than survival horror, which is a real shame.

Why does Silent Hill 2 GREATLY overshadow 1?

I've never played 1 but i'm lowkey curious. Silent Hill 2 is regarded as one of the best games of all time, but what about the first one? I mean Silent Hill 1 was the one to start it all.

So... how did *Silent Hill: Townfall* turn out?

I was really looking forward to *Silent Hill f* back in the day because I’m a fan of Ryukishi’s work, but I didn’t really follow *Townfall* closely before its release—even though I was intrigued. So, I wanted to know: did the game turn out well? Is the fanbase just whining again, like they love to do with every new game, or are there genuine reasons for the hate?

I translated the official Silent Hill f ARG into English! (Details in Post)

Hey All! Many of you may not know that there's an official Konami official ARG follow-up to Silent Hill F that goes through a bit more of the lore after the ending of the video game. Why might you not know it? Well, until now, it's because it's been Japanese only. Well, I translated all of it - you can read through it in the google drive link down below.

I would suggest you watch the youtube video as well, because the format might not make sense without it. Plus I put in a ton of work to make sure it all stands up as something the community can reference. (Especially because the SH wiki has some information on the story, but there are some missing/incorrect details)

I hope you enjoy it!

Has anyone figured out what's going on with the strange post cards yet?

I collected a decent amount of them on my first playthrough but I have no clue what's the deal with them still naturally
