What’s happening (new growth from center)

Was thrilled when this started pushing out a runner, flowering, and producing future spider babies! But what is going on in the center of the plant? Seems like it has started growing differently and it doesn’t look like another runner, curious what’s going on?

Spider Plant Seeds

I don’t see much information on plant genes when it comes to spider plant SEEDS on the internet, which I chop up to being because baby clones are so easy to get not many people dabble in them, so I wanted to share my own experience so far. For extra information, I collected my seeds from reverse variegated spider plants; variegated spider plants are chimeras, so they have two different sets of genes, and I’m unsure how it’s decided what genes the ovule or pollen will carry, but seeds will only get one set of genes, making it impossible to get another variegated plant without a mutation, but in a perfect world where both halves of the plant get an equal chance at reproduction, and with the theory that the white genes are recessive (purely my speculation based on my experiment so far), in a large enough study I would expect ~75% to be pure green and ~25% to be unviable white plants that die shortly after germination (But this is an extremely rough calculation not taking into account so many things about its genes I simply don’t know)

I planted 121 (one cell got a second seed because I thought the original seed was so small and disfigured it had no chance at surviving, but surprise! it sprouted too)

typically my shelf maintained 80-85°F and ~40-50% humidity, but sometimes the temperature was higher during the day and lower during the night

It took 15 days for the first few seeds to germinate, and I am currently on day 26. I just surpassed the halfway mark and have 64 greens and 1 white. In my purely speculated theory, I would aim for ~90 green and ~30 white, and I would expect the white ones to germinate in a similar timeline as the greens, but slow down immediately after sprouting and die off relatively quickly, but to my surprised today was the first day getting a white. Maybe in addition to the lack of color the genes responsible for the white color (or lack of color) also make them have weaker roots or store less energy in their seeds? either one slowing down their germination speed. I’m unsure but I will update as the days go by. Here is my day by day account of how many sprouted and the total:

3 - 15 days -3

2 - 16 days -5

2 - 17 days -7

2 - 18 days -9

6 - 19 days  -15

6 - 20 days - 21

12 - 21 days - 33

13 - 22 days - 46

3 - 23 days - 49

7 - 24 days - 56

2 - 25 days - 58

7 - 26 days - 65 (1 white)

if anyone has their own stats or any additional information on spider plant seeds I would love some comments!

I do not yet have any variegated spider plants to collect seeds from, only reverse variegated spider plants, but I would be soooo interested to know if the determination for which genes are in the ovule and pollen had to do with which half of the plant is white vs green, if I end up with too many green plants compared to what I expected, I wonder if I would have the opposite problem with regular variegation producing too many white. from there maybe one is more likely to have green/white genes in the ovule and the other type of gene in the pollen and cross pollinating between reverse and standard you could control the rate? I want to experiment so much more!!

What is happening here?

I have this Spider plant that I rescued a few months ago. It’s quite large, but I noticed that it’s starting to flop over in a lot of areas. It’s hard to explain, but I took some pictures. Has anyone seen this before? I’m wondering if I should take this piece off and repot it?

Last picture is how it looks when it’s watered and super happy.

repot or wait?

so my spider has some roots growing out of the bottom, but in general the pot isn’t very rootbound and there is still a lot of space for it to move around

does this warrant a repot? i’ve also noticed the growth slow down over the last month where it was growing quite quickly before (no change in water or fertiliser)

What could be the cause of this?

What could be the cause of this? I water when the soil is dry with rain water and fertilize with Miracle-Gro houseplant fertilizer. It gets indirect sun till about 12PM and then full sun till about 6pm. I don’t think it’s pest damage, I see a ton of jumping spiders, they should keep pests away.

Brown Tips and API Water Conditioner

Hi! All my plants have brown tips. I bought API Tap Water Conditioner. The super strength type. I got it off of Amazon. Has anyone used this brand before? I don’t want to use it and have it kill my plants. If you have, or have used water conditioner, how much would you recommend for a gallon of water? Thanks!

Is she having MORE babies??

I saw this stem growing from the center of my spider plant. The first babies she had aren’t event ready for a pot yet. Is this another stem for babies or is it something else?

Any tips for my baby?

This is my son Jason lol! I’m new to plants and I’ve had him since my junior year of college, about 3 years now. He’s been in the same pot for those 3 years and he had a bunch of growth once I removed him from his original pot. I repotted him using Miracle Gros Tropical Plant Soil and added some fertilizer sticks to them. I think he’s a little starved for light so I’m setting him out on my balcony for a little to see if he enjoys the light there, it’s south facing so he only gets light after 11am ish. Any pros giving me advice on how to make him grow more fully and happier would be greatly appreciated!!

Wow! You guys are awesome. Here are some more pictures.

Sorry but I posted my plants the other day and didn't expect much attention so I didn't check Reddit until like two days later.

The parent plants are obviously the big boys up top. They're almost 3 years old and I believe they were originally planted 2-4 plants per pot, but I bought them so I don't know.

I water them every 7-10 days depending on the sun and wind that week. I'm in the Midwest and they can get 3-6 of direct sunlight per day, and plenty of indirect light. I have fertilized them once or twice in their lifetime but I used really diluted miracle grow fertilizer. They're all extremely root bound (last pic) and I need to size up their pots but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I have had at least 800 spiderettes because I own almost 100 plants. The last time I took cuttings, I pulled 136 and that was maybe a quarter at the time. I put them all in cheap plastic pots and the cheapest soil I can buy and I water them with a hose. I am never taking that many cuttings again.

One baby is suuuuuper variegated and I'm curious to see how it grows. It is currently rooting so it is going strong. If anybody knows more about that one in particular, let me know. I have only had 1/800 grow that white.

Repot?

Hi! I propagated this beauty from the cuttings of a friend’s plant. She’s been doing great! Today I noticed her roots are growing out of the pot. I know spider plants loved to be crowded, but is this too crowded? She’s in a 6 inch pot now. Thanks!!
