Hi, I am a 23 year old male who’s maybe about to accept a job offer in Saint Paul. I’m coming from Texas so I do not know anything about the city. Hoping maybe people can help me out with where to live and areas to live and just general tips. Looking for apartments/studios under $900-1,000. Any help would be appreciated thanks!
Hello!
I'm moving to the Como park area off Hamline from Bemidji, MN 6/1 and was hoping for some insight/guidance from locals, as I haven't lived in a major city for 15 years now.
Parking: the apartment has a paid garage, but I'm not sure if it's necessary. How's on street parking by Como park? Is there a lot of restrictions? How does the city handle snow emergencies? Is there a lot of car shopping/ theft in this area... it seems so quiet to me. How's the public transportation in this area? I'm hoping to use my car minimally.
Neighborhood: On that note, it seems like the area I'm moving to is densely residential and I didn't see much in the way of businesses or grocery stores. Are there any major retailers/ mom and pop grocery stores nearby you all could recommend? What's the vibe in this area? It seems relatively close to UofM campus so I'm wondering if there's good coffee shops/ restaurants etc.
Nightlife/3rd spaces/ community: This will be my first time without a yard in a long time. I'm pretty stoked to be right by Como Park, but I'm wondering about community gardens in the area, as I'd like to help invest in this. I've been involved with food support/ mutual aid in the Northwoods and would like to continue this efforts in St Paul. Regarding community, I'm a drag performer and queer, so I'm wondering about both safety and ways to connect with my peeps down there. Is there any queer bars/ drag venues/ community centers in the Como Park area? Karaoke?
Miscellaneous: Any tips for a country mouse moving to the big city? Common mistakes to be mindful of? Is there curbside pickup for recycling? Any veterinarians you recommend?
Thanks for responding! I'm filled with equal parts excitement and anxiety rn and would appreciate any insights.
It’s cool to hear more people talking about the downtown St. Paul development. One thing that I think is interesting is the PARKING. The amount of it and how little it’s used. It’s not even enforced.
Like I don’t want to blow up my spot here, but I work on 7th street right by the Xcel, and I’ve parked on the street every day for my entire shift without paying. Ive been doing this since I learned to drive and misread the signs. I thought “4 hour limit” meant you only had to pay if you were staying more than 4 hours. I didn’t notice until like 2 years later. I had never gotten a ticket, so I kept doing what I was doing.
The only ticket I ever got was for parking somewhere that wasn’t a parking spot.
Is this on purpose to encourage people to visit?
Also it’s insane that we have so many $20 “event lots” when I’ve never had to park further than 7 blocks away from the Xcel. I think we should make these lots something else. We have skyways, tunnels, and sidewalks everywhere.
Minneapolis charges roughly the same for event parking, and I feel like they have a lot more infrastructure packed into their downtown event areas that make it more inconvenient to park on the street.
Specifically these 2 parking lots pictured. Burger Moes uses that space pretty often but those spaces could be used so much better to create a better downtown environment. It’s hard to imagine they’re more profitable sitting as $20 parking lots.
A park would be so fun to have behind Burger Moes but I doubt that would pay off.
What would you want them replaced them with?
Working on Duluth's Glensheen Mansion next!
That's significantly less than all the other stations. I'm assuming this isn't true. Has anyone been today?
The place is like a '90s museum for anything cool, I just wanted to give a little exposure since I was talking with the owner and he mentioned he suffered a robbery that forced him to close down a second location.
Looking for lost dog named Charlee is a basset hound mix last seen off of highway 280 north bound. She is brown short fur with white paws, VERY SHY AND TIMID. Most likely in Saint Anthony park community council
Do any of you have recommendations for a local bookstore with a decent science fiction section? Bonus points if the bookstore is "old fashioned" in the sense that the store is packed with books.
Wanting a table for one tonight (Saturday), but Estelle’s resy says first 2-top open is at 9.
No one is answering phones just yet.
Will I be able to walk in for a table at 6?
I’m taking ideas for the best service/experience for Mulch. I’ll need about 70 bags (I’d consider bulk, but the weather can be iffy). It has to be delivered. In St. Paul.
Thanks in advance.
I’ve lived in down town St. Paul near Pedro Park for about a year and a half now, and have heard much about the hopeful downtown revival.
We’re getting an Aldi, new apartments, the vintage store in the Wells Fargo building and possibly the renovations to Grand Casino.
My question is regarding the swathes of barren street level retail. With so much investment being put into residential zoning, what businesses should look to thrive in that area?
What will attract young people to move downtown?
We have plenty of bars. Does downtown need a nightclub? An ice cream parlor? What do we want to fill all of this empty space? What will?
I’m visiting from out of town tomorrow and curious what time traffic will start for the Wild hockey game? Thinking of visiting Stillwater just after lunchtime and then heading back towards Minneapolis. Will traffic around St Paul be bad by then?
Good afternoon everyone :)
I am looking to donate a bunch of lightly used cat things that my cat never uses, I’ve got 2 standing scratching posts, a few cat beds, a ton of the shrimp flavored lickable pouches, and some fishing toys and stuff like that. Do you know of a non profit rescue or something that would have need for these items??
I want to take the bus to downtown Saint Paul today. I have never ridden the bus, and I wanna ask some questions to help ease my mind.
3 different buses depart from the bus stop I'm using. What do I do if the wrong bus approaches? Just wave them off?
I'm now on the bus. Can I pay for my brother who will be with me? Do I just let the driver know?
How do I know when my stop is? Is there a scrolling marquee thing on the ceiling like the trains that tell you what stops are coming up?
And when my stop is coming up, is it like pulling the old-school cord to let the driver know, hey, my stop's coming up, let me off?
I'm nervous, haha
Who’s hiring for the summer in St. Paul or East Burbs? Who’d you recommend for an older, experienced server? Could also do food running for an upscale restaurant.
Flexibility and respect are musts. I’m an adult - responsible, dependable, and trustworthy.
Thanks!
