Need help - Questions regarding gas mileage for long road trip pulling a trailer 2k miles

I am about to load up my 2004 Toyota Highlander and move from North Dakota to Texas. I will be towing a motorcycle trailer (with motorcycle, obviously). On the drive up 2 years ago I got terrible gas mileage. I *may* have an upstream oxygen sensor out.

What gear should I drive in towing the trailer? How can I maximize my gas mileage? Please, any help would be much appreciated, I am dreading filling my tank ever 160 miles. Money is tight and I am worried.

Has anyone used uhauls auto transport with a max tow rating of 4500lbs?

I’m trying to use their auto transport trailer to drive an old Miata with my 2011 Honda pilot. I did the math, and even with the heaviest possible configurations, I’d still be under that limit. However, it seems the website won’t let me tow unless I set the max capacity to 5000lbs

What size/type of truck do I need?

I’m looking to purchase a used truck to tow my sports car to track events. The car weighs about 3500lbs + whatever the trailer weight will be. I will likely use a flat trailer but maybe enclosed eventually.
I would also like to haul some type of camper setup in the bed of the truck so I don’t have to sleep on the ground at the track. Crossbars and roof top tent are an option as well, but I think my wife wants the full camper setup.

What type of truck would you guys recommend?
Could I get away with an F-150? Or would I need 1500 diesel? 2500 gasser/diesel? Budget is a factor, so if we could spend like $18-25k that would be ideal, but we are open to more expensive (~$30k) options if needed.
It would be great to find something that’s modern and fully loaded for comfort on long road trips. I don’t have a brand preference, I just don’t want an unreliable piece of junk.

Thanks in advance!

Does this tow bill seem high?

Does this tow bill seem high? Long story short, a truck towing a trailer with a mini excavator was sideswiped on trailer. The excavator was loaded too far back on trailer causing the trailer to fishtail. Trailer flipped upside down with excavator still strapped to trailer. Tow company comes out with a little crane and picks the excavator up and sets on tow company’s flatbed trailer and does the same with the 30’? trailer. I realize the excavator weighs more but the trailer is larger and less manageable. The tow bill for the trailer was $700. For the excavator it was $5,200. Does that seem right?

Wish me luck

I have never hauled anything like this before. The closest thing was my little zero turn mower that was a 10 minute drive from the house. This and three hours on the road is going to be a whole new beast.

EDIT; I made it back safe and sound. For everyone wondering, yes it was only strapped down at the front. The straps are each 3,000lb workload rated and 10,000lb break rated so that’s 6,000lb they can handle for a tractor that weighs somewhere between 3,200lb-4,100lb. I’d venture to say that’s better than my grandfather ever did cause he only wrapped two chains around the tractors brush guard and the front of the trailer. Not saying that that either is the safest or correct but it has always done fine. The bush hog was lowered all the way down and resting on the trailer. The tractor tires were choked. 500lb tongue weight according to the scale on the fancy ball mount a coworker let me borrow. No trailer brakes, either. This trailer was hand built by my great grandfather and has been hailing this tractor since the early 70’s using various different light duty pickups. I took it low and slow on a US highway going 50 the whole time.

Fifth wheel position in truck

I've had this trailer for about 4 years, and always hooked up the way the dealership helped me set up with my truck when I bought it, and the anderson ultimate hitch.

Towed for 15hour trips and never had a real issue, but someone recently mentioned it seemed like the trailer sat fairly far back in the truck and now that I really look at it, I feel a little bit that way too. Does it look like it is actually abnormally far back, or is it just because I've got the long bed and a somewhat stubby fifth wheel box?

Legit repo mistake or failed theft?

I apologize for not getting a photo of the entire truck, but can anyone advise if this was a legit repo mistake or if I stopped my car from being stolen. No markings that I can remember, other than the red surveillance stickers.

Truck pulled up to my driveway and, within 1 minute, had my car up on the lift. 3 of us were immediately outside to ask what he was doing, when he quickly said, "Oh, wrong car. There's another one nearby (he referred to the incorrect vehicle model)" and began lowering it.

I was pretty relieved, so I made a joke that it was bad day for him to make that kind of mistake, but then reality sunk in and I asked him who he worked for. He didn't respond, so I asked if he looked at the plate first (I only have a rear plate and it was tucked super tight to the garage, so I doubt a plate reader could have seen it). He said he ran the VIN, but he was putting the vehicle on the lift instantly and if he had run the VIN he wouldn't have put it up. He immediately stopped talking and as I began reciting his license plate number, he pulled off.

Is this normal for a repossession? After I got the picture from someone, I realized the truck is kinda odd for a tow truck and the plate looks odd.

Interested if any tow professionals have experience or info on this situation?

Edit: I've received a lot of helpful answers. For added context, I called the non-emergency police line and made a report. They told me it could be legit, or could be an attempted theft, because both happen a lot. I gave them a physical description/tag number. Not much else I can do. I was really just wondering if I somehow missed out on this well-known tactic for car theft. Appreciate the responses. I've had a fucked up day besides this, so the insight eased my mind a bit.

Loading 5x8 Enclosed Trailer questions

Please delete if not allowed here!

Hey everyone! I'm not entirely unfamiliar with towing/hauling, but loading trailers I am new to. I am getting ready to move from MI to SC and have some questions about loading/tongue weight. I have a 07 Edge AWD with Tow Package that I will be towing a uHaul rental 5x8 enclosed trailer with. I have a ~4ft tall, 26" wide tool box followed with another tool chest that is 26" wide and 5 drawers tall. Most of the rest of my stuff is not nearly as heavy - Full size mattress + wire frame, CHEAP TV stand and just totes of dishes, clothes and miscellaneous things. I see online that they want a 60/40 split, front to back. I see suggestions of a tongue weight of only 390lbs, uHauls own website suggests loading to the front with heavier items (such as toolboxes), but something in me is telling me to consult elsewhere...Would it be ignorant to load the tool boxes at the front? Or should I move them more towards the axle of the trailer?

Anything helps...outside of destructive criticism. Thank you

Local towing jobs in San Antonio

Hey guys I recently got my TDLR and looking to get into a towing company! I have some experience with flatbed since I’ve worked with my uncle in that field but no experience in self loader trucks. I’m open to any kind of work in this field if anyone knows any towing companies that are currently hiring. Thanks!

No info on these? Flory Industries tow dolly model 220

Bought this from a really old gentleman. I spoke with someone at Flory Industries and they explained that these were no longer made after the 90’s. Anyone recognize these or have any manuals or documentation? The internet actually has nothing on these… 🤔

Should 40 degrees be the max or is this not the correct hitch?

The travel trailer dealership recommended this weight distribution hitch one year ago. I moved it for the fourth time since purchasing and noticed way too many noises. Upon checking I noticed the gouging in the trailer tongue and the WDH. The dealership that installed says I’m overturning and it has to be perpendicular to the vehicle for that to happen, I can’t say I ever been close to 90 degrees while towing or backing up, (although my truck does have rear steering maybe that could play a part into it?) I measured the useable radius at about 40 degrees either way, is that normal? Or should’ve chosen a different hitch?

Wondering if there is a 15x 6.5(7) foot trailer that’s sub 1000 pounds for a car.

Also for example couldn’t you cut out the middle part of a trailer (if made of wood) to reduce the weight since you only need space for tires?

I’m talking a trailer that’s sub carry’s the whole car not just a front wheel puller. My research on my phone hasn’t been very good. But I was wondering if any kn ew already.

ChatGPT tells me that this should not exist...I was looking to replace the leaf springs but apparently the way the suspension is setup with both ends of the spring being bolted to the trailer is wrong. What should I do?

What tire pressure to run?

My grandfather passed away back in August and he left me a 69 Ford 2000 tractor and a custom built trailer that his father built for it. This thing is heavy like HEAVY, heavy. It’s got two axles and the tires he ran are 235/75R15’s. I am wondering what tire pressure I should run.

As far as I can find, the tractor is anywhere between 3,100lb-4,100lb and if I had to guess it’s a 16ft trailer? It’s big enough to carry the tractor, its brush hog, and he comfortably fit an 89 Oldsmobile 88 on it if that is any help.

A guy at work that does hauling and such said start with 65psi and see how it does. The tires I bought for it show a max psi of 80 and can do 2,500lb each at that psi.

Sorry for not having any clearer or more detailed info.

Wrongfully towed for no insurance

I was towed on Saturday for Atlanta PD with claims of no insurance. I bought the vehicle this week and added the vehicle to the insurance the next day. I didn’t have a new insurance card yet, however. I got there as he was towing me and he said because the insurance wasn’t showing in the system he has to tow it. I logged into the site for insurance and showed him the vehicle active on the policy.

Was towed and paid to pick it up. Shouldn’t have been towed in the first place. Cost close to $300. Any recourse for getting reimbursed for this? My plan was clearly and confirmed by insurance in effect for multiple days before the tow.

Would this be legal?

I was letting a friend keep a car on my property while they fixed it up since they had nowhere else to put it. This friend dropped me recently, yet their stuff is still on my property despite them saying it would be gone by last Friday. Would it be legal to tow their car off? And if so, would I have to call a towing company? Or if I had the means to tow it myself, could I? Where would I even put it? Thank you,

(This is in Utah if different laws apply)

My dad gave me this tow hitch, it's super heavy, with no markings, any idea how old it could be?

Also would it be safe to tow 2,000 trailer with?

Weird Old Hitch follow up

Took a few whacks with my purse but I finally got this old coupler out, figured people might be interested to know about it. Turns out someone on Ebay is very helpfully selling the box that this coupler would've been sold in.

Also, because I can, I'm including pictures of how I got the trailer home since it wasn't towable, shredded tires and coupler missing pieces, etc.

Also thanks again to everyone from the other day, really appreciated all the input and knowledge that was shared.
