How do we feel about Lenaya/Lanaya for a horror/contemporary character name?
The character is a child. I am hoping to have somewhat realistic names, names that can exist in real life but also do stand out, and this name matches other names in the story. I'm wondering how people would pronounce it (how you would, and where you are from), and how it would be spelled. I am leaning towards Lanaya. Let me know if it's cozy or if it's too much visually or audibly. Also let me know if there is a name that I'm trying to remember that made me think of this.
A birth announcement on Facebook
Koupper Augustlandon. That is what one of my former classmates actually named her child. First name is supposed to be pronounced like "Cooper" and idk what's happening with the middle name. Truly the biggest tragedeigh I've ever seen.
Will-uhhhhh
Found on TikTok. She has a just turned 1 year old (Zaelynn), twin girls in March (Willowfienah & Willahmienah) and pregnant again, probably another set of twins.
Just……how??
So, I believe my name is a bit of a tradegeigh. & I have always hated it. It’s Dariel (dare-ree-elle). Literally Ariel just with a D in front. But it makes people short circuit, glitch, and have a stroke when they try to pronounce it.
My entire life people have pronounced my name wrong. Most times I get called Daryl, which ok I kinda get, but mind you, I’m a woman, and to look at me and call me a males name is diabolical.
But the absolute worse was Denario. De fuckin nario. And this is AFTER I had already introduced myself. With a name tag on.
So I have gone by Elle for years. You’d only know my real name if we grew up together. And now I have to deal with being called AL and ELLIE. All because my mom couldn’t just simply name me after the little mermaid, Ariel. She JUST had to be creative and combine my dad’s name and I’d be so different!
Just a rant to remind people that you’re naming a FUTURE ADULT AND NOT A FOREVER BABY!!!!!!
Edit: yes I know who Daryl Hannah is. Just bc there’s a woman out there named Daryl does NOT make me ok with being called Dayl lol but thanks for pointing that out guys!
A child called Delirium
Yesterday at work I overheard a parent call her son Delirium. I thought I misheard her until she said it again when I rung her up at the registers.
I just... Delirium?? Why? Just why?
Overheard at the community pool: Macho (age 5)
I thought they were calling him Nacho as a nickname but no, kid’s given name was Macho.
My second favorite was a mom who when asked her name: “Shannon. With a C.” “Shannon?” “With a C.” Channon? Schannon? Cshannon? Idk where the C was meant to go but she wanted us to know it was in there somewhere.
Caught in the wild
Not a tragedeigh, but definitely a tragedy 😅 his older sister is GreeneLei…
From the maternity ward…
Welcome to the world, Roy-ale-blu' and Anahleayah.
What non-tragedeigh names did you struggle to read for the first time?
Imogen. I don't live in a place where this is common, sorry. The first time I saw it, I thought it was supposed to be pronounced like a combination of Emoji and gin, like ee-MO-jin (emphasis on the mo). I know how to say it now, but I'm still not the biggest fan of the spelling. Personally, I think it looks like a shortening of "Image generator". That said, the actual pronunciation is not bad.
Edit: Also I can tell this comment section is going to be full of Irish names, so try to list some other confusing names too if you can
More names that tripped me up:
- Antoine
- Buchanan
- Calliope
- Geoffrey
A controversial suggestion to end all Tragedeigh
I will preface this by saying that I don't believe those in power should be given more power...
Let's go back to the time when a child would be named at birth and that child would receive their name at their baptism.
Often times it would be the same name. But... But, sometimes the voice of reason comes through and Lollipop becomes Jennifer, Barbarian becomes Robert. Sometimes the Tragedeigh is avoided.
This isn't an endorsement of any specific religion. It is just the one I am most familiar with.
But can we get back to the practice of "birth name" and having a separate "naming day"?
Kids choosing their own names
So, I go to a school with kids grades 6-12th, and all I can say is that we should not be letting children choose their own names. There is a sixth grader at my school who has named herself Cheese and another who named himself Zandy. I can't imagine being a teacher and having to hold my laughter during attendance.
Edit: Jeez, Reddit really can't take a joke. I actually go by a name separate from my chosen name, I was joking when saying children shouldn't be able to choose their own names but guys, the kid named themself Cheese.
Maevereigh
found this while scrolling tiktok... next slide shows grandma (named Jan) with baby (labeled Janine) so i'm hoping she goes by her middle name. i understand mom's middle name is Mae so explains the first part of the baby‘s first name but wow... Avery but with extra letters pretty much ? i guess ?
Kid I went to school with
I went to high school with a kid named Charles. The only problem is that EVERYONE called him Chuckles. Dude came in on the first day and during attendance
"Do we have ... a Charles" no one responded. "A chuckles?"
"Here"
