Where are my needs based grants

I’m going into my senior year and missing all 5 state grants renewable and merit included. Also my work study has been brought down to zero even tho my student aid index is -1500…. Is anyone else experiencing this?

college roomie app

So I have an account on the college roomie app since I'm an incoming freshman and thought I would be able to find a good roommate there. I didn't talk to many people and forgot about that app, and today, when I opened it, some random person is being shown as my roommate and I am 100% sure I didn't add them or accept their request but I am unable to remove them. Is this some sort of glitch? Also, the person I wanted to be roommates with is now being shown as "not eligible".

Who do you recommend for calc 2?

I’m mainly between Andy Bristow, Joseph Flenner, and Hudson Lafayette. I’m usually pretty good at math but I really appreciate having a teacher that goes through problems and explains things well!

Annual Raises?

Is staff getting a raise this year? We usually get one on our July 1st paycheck, but there is nothing there this year.

Question: Comm Arts/Art Program Class Specifics & Recommendations

I'm trying to come up with a make-shift plan for my degree in Communication Arts and I'm hoping I can get some input on a few big questions, hopefully from some other students in the Art Program. For reference, I'm focused on Character Design, 3D Modeling, and 2D/3D Animation.

COAR Upper Div Electives

Do any of these courses overlap with other COAR Major electives or Major Requirements? I would assume that stuff like Color Theory is taught in other classes, just not the focus. I'm pretty sure I'm going to want to take COAR 309, COAR 327, COAR 425, and COAR 432. Should I double up with COAR 328 as well?

·         COAR 303 Color Theory and Practice

·         COAR 305 Figure in Illustration

·         COAR 308 Cut Scene

·         COAR 309 3D II

·         COAR 320 Concept Drawing

·         COAR 326 Imagery for Science Fiction and Fantasy

·         COAR 327 Comics and Graphic Novels I

·         COAR 328 Comics and Graphic Novels II

·         COAR 392. Research/Individual Study (1-6 Credits)

·         COAR 399 Applied Arts Lab (0-4 Credits)

·         COAR 425 Storytelling and Animation Production

·         COAR 432 3D III

·         COAR 435 3D IV

·         COAR 492 Communication Arts Internship (1-6 Credits)

Open Upper Div Electives

Should I take another writing course before PHTO 390 (Part of the Animation Minor)? Should I take a different writing class instead of PHTO 390? (I would meet the Minor's required elective requirement either way because of COAR 203, COAR 321, and KINE 348)

·         Writing Course?: ENGL 303. Writing for Stage and/or Screen (PreReq Gen Ed ENGL 250)

or ENGL 307. Writing Fiction

or AMPT 402. Editorial Storytelling

or AMPT 404. Script (these were the four I could readily find that weren't locked behind reqs or Majors)

·         KINE 345. Animation Concepts (4 Credits)

·         KINE 448. 3D Computer Animation (4 Credits)

·         KINE 458. Virtual Interactive Worlds (4 Credits)

Animation Minor

Might not be a question that can be answered here, but can I elect to not use eligible credits toward the Open Upper Div electives if they overlap with the Minor electives and instead take other classes to fulfill their elective requirements separately?

·         KINE 245. Animation Practices

·         ARTH 370. History of Animated Film (Fulfills Minor and Major Requirement)

·         KINE 405. Animation Studio

Minor Electives

·         COAR 203. 3D I: Digital 3D Sculpting

·         COAR 321. Illustration I: Sequential

·         KINE 348. 3D Computer Art (4 Credits)

·         PHTO 390. Writing and Directing for the Screen

Remaining Gen Eds

I'm transferring in two classes for my Breadth of Knowledge Humanities/Fine Arts and my UNIV 111. So, I need a math, a natural science, a social science, and 3 extra Gen Eds. These are the ones that stood out to me, but feel free to let me know about other cool ones. I believe I may not have to take the lab portion of Physics, hence the question mark.

·         ENGL 250 Reading Film

·         MHIS 252 Soundscapes

·         SPCH 221 Oral Communication and Presentation

·         TEDU 212 Creating Digital Art and Music Through Computer Coding

·         ADMS 256 Human Dimensions of Leadership: Empathy, Trust and Care in Organizations

·         IDST 210 Micro Internships and Career Design

·         POLI/INTL 105 International Relations

·         BUSN 205 Introduction to the World of Business

·         ECON 205 The Economics of Product Development and Markets

·         FIRE 201 Personal Financial Planning

·         PHYS 101 Foundations of Physics + Lab?

·         MATH 131 Introduction to Contemporary Mathematics

Besides a car what is the best way to get around the city to either go to work or hang with friends

I'm an incoming freshman. I have a car, but im pretty sure I can't bring it. Besides that, like the title suggests, how do you guys who have been at VCU longer get around to go places and/or go to work?

I regret moving down so early : (

I'm transferring into VCU this Fall from NOVA and moved down here on the 25th of June because that's when my lease started and my internship back home ended.

I was really excited to meet new people and begin a "real" college/city life, but man...there's not a lot of people and events when school isn't in session. In retrospect, I might have been kinda dumb for thinking that students would stick around during the summer.

I've signed up for all the volunteer events I can find and I've walked around the fan and carytown, but I can't help but feel some dread thinking about how these next two-ish months are gonna go. I really want to make friends, especially because I've left behind everyone I know.

transferring from VT to VCU just for social/political reasons?

hey all,

i'm a rising sophomore currently attending virginia tech for electrical engineering. though i do engineering, my personality tends to be more artsy and i'm quite left-leaning, as well as being black and queer. i'm big into music too, and i make beats and play jazz. though i'd prefer to do music, i feel that electrical engineering is just bearable and interesting enough where i don't think i'd absolutely abhor doing it for a career

all this is to say that after my first year at tech, i'm just not sure if it's the right fit. virginia tech is getting progressively "un-woke" by cutting things like queer and black living learning community programs, cutting DEI protections, and a host of other dumb decisions. this is not to mention that the culture at tech is overwhelmingly frat-centric and very white, with not a lot of diversity or a big alternative scene.

though i've found my way a little bit when it comes to community with things like marching band as well as getting involved with the limited alternative scene at school, i just feel like another would fit me more sometimes. i love how prestigious my school is, but that prestige is pretty much the only reason i had tech as my #1 school when i applied to college. the culture isn't for me despite how great our engineering program is, and our school is in the middle of nowhere where you just see the same people over and over w/ the country being the only thing surrounding us. when i went to VCU to see a friend recently i was reminded of just how much i love the city life and how lacking VT is in diversity and just people who look like me. despite the circle i'd built for myself which i'd hate to life behind, the culture is just overwhelmingly BORING! i find myself thinking about what life would be like at a more woke school all the time even though it's a little bit dumb.

despite everything i've said though, i'm really just quite bad with change. i'm already a whole year into school and entering fall semester at tech soon, so it just feels like it's all too late to up and switch schools. as well as this, it just kinda feels like the "selfish" move to make for myself. sticking it out at VT for engineering would definitely put me on the path to success when it comes to putting food on the table and getting opportunities and all that. it just feels like a huge move to make and it's not like i'm even guaranteed to make friends or build up my community again, especially after already spending my so-called freshman experience at a different school.

any advice?

hot take: people here are fatphobic AF

Genuinely for an “inclusive” and “diverse” school people here are QUICK to make fun of someone’s weight, especially when they don’t like you. and the gag is that the same people who go to no kings protests and are vocal about racism, sexism and homophobia/transphobia are the very same people who are i’ll turn around and call someone a “big back” or some other weight related insult. “it’s not healthy” is not an excuse to shit on anyone. also you don’t ever know what anyone is going through and why they are the way they are. it also shows in the way people are represented in student media. anyways that’s all i had to say

mcv campus parking options?

hello! i recently got into a program on the mcv campus, i see the thing about the lottery that will go on, but if i don’t get chosen, are there any other lots that people recommend? like lots that are close to mcv but aren’t owned by vcu that i could buy a pass for? i technically could walk from my apartment, but it would probably be 20 ish minutes and likely not an amazing choice for everyday.

Any easy classes for gpa boost

I looked through the subreddit and i've either taken them before or the teachers aren't available anymore. Preferably asynchronous but sync is okay too. 3-4 credits

Ed.D. Leadership through VCU. Thoughts?

I have been reading a bit about the Leadership, Doctor of Education through VCU. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this program and can offer any insight. I am a veteran and have extensive leadership experience in my previous career as a civil servant. In 2022 I retired and finished my Master of Teaching at UVA. I really enjoy teaching, but I am also passionate about leadership. My tuition would be covered at any public institution in Virginia.

this might be why financial aid is gone

Per U.S. Department of Education regulations & OBBBA, federal financial aid will only pay for classes that directly count toward your officially declared degree or certificate program.

https://sfs.vcu.edu/financial-aid/reconciliation-bill-of-2025/

If you enroll in a class that isn’t required for your major/minor/certificate requirements, that class won't count toward your financial aid enrollment status (e.g., if you take 12 credits but 3 credits don't count toward your degree, financial aid views you as part-time at 9 credits). Your financial aid award will be prorated or completely canceled.

If you like taking random electives for fun, just keep in mind you might have to pay out of pocket for them if they don't fit into your major's track!
