How is Klay's game now? Is he about the same as his last season with the Warriors or is he regressing?

I haven't really paid attention to the Mavs but his numbers definitely are down. I don't know how much you can make of it considering the Mavs are a mess and weren't fully healthy. For the most part he seems similar to the last year with the Warriors.

I scouted EVERY Labaron Philon play for three full games. I expected a trigger-happy small guard…but I saw something totally different. Are we sure he isn’t a top-10 pick?

Philon is a prospect that I‘ve mostly ignored. Based on scouting reports, he just didn't seem like my kind of player. Shoot-first, kind of ball-hoggy, small combo guard? Not for me.

So it was to my surprise that while scouting Aday Mara in Michigan’s Sweet 16 game against Alabama, I realized I couldn’t take my eyes off of Philon. I decided to watch him closely for several games: vs. Michigan, vs. Darius Acuff and Arkansas, and the Kentucky game where he went 0-6 from 3. I always like to see how players look when their shot isn’t falling.

The video above summarizes what I found. There are three major themes:

  1. Philon is one of the best ball-handlers I’ve ever seen, full stop. This isn’t just a “strength;” his handle is absolutely world-class. He gets anywhere he wants on the court, at any time.
  2. He is a fantastic and willing passer, very sophisticated in PnR. It’s hard to clip something that didn’t happen, but I did not see over-shooting; I saw a player constantly creating advantages and patiently converting them into open looks for teammates.
  3. He plays strong. Philon is only 176 pounds but he creates contact and uses leverage to move bigger players. Opposing teams did not target him on defense.

The big picture for me: I want NBA prospects to have one skill they can rely on from Day 1 in the NBA. Philon has two: his handle and his passing. You can give him the ball and expect him to beat his man, every time, and then do something useful with that advantage. He does need to put on weight, but he is functionally strong; you don’t see him getting pushed around like Keaton Wagler.

Ultimately I think Philon belongs - at minimum - in the same tier as Wagler, Flemings, and Brown Jr. I'd love to hear what you all think. If you want even more Philon scouting I have a total of 47 notes on him (lol) and 100s on other players on Grinding Tape. Add your own! I know you’ve got hot takes!

Hot Take: Andre Iguodala Is the Greatest Role Player OAT

This entire debate comes down to what a role player is. We can’t include Draymond Green as a role player because of his 4x All NBA appearances and 9x All Defense Appearances. Andre Iguodala is tricky, he was for the most part known for being stepping into his position as a primary role player with the Warriors after his star studded stint with the Sixers.

I think overall this makes him a greater role player. Because despite his previous success, having the patience to step into that role makes him more respectable. He sacrificed personal success for team success, a very difficult decision, but one that paid dividends.

His case is straightforward, 1x AS, 4x Champ, 1 FMVP (heavily undermined yet well deserved), 2x All Defense, and numerous runs for 6MOTY.

This take could honestly be horrendous or decent. But from the top of mind, Andre Iguodala is at least one of the great role players ever.

What team would even want to pay Porzingis?

I see athletic alchemy and many far are taking it for granted that some other team will definitely wanna pay Porzingis close to his previous salary and that he's as good as gone for the warriors.

This is over pessimistic (or optimistic). First why would any team in the NBA want to pay someone who might never play more than half a season more than a vet min? Also even if he plays, he clearly is always gassed and lacks his previous endurance and agility. His play in performance launched his stats in the gutter with how his defense was like wet toilet paper both in and outside the paint.

Also, the teams with cap space are almost certainly gonna go for bigger fish, such as Watson, Dort, Hartenstein, Kessler, Robinson, Gillespie, Reaves, etc. not one of the cap space teams would want to be capped out because of him.

Also the only teams with enough cap space to sign Porzingis to a deal he thinks he deserves are not contenders next year, and he clearly wants to try to win in the playoffs.

So I think we should relax, Porzingis has most likely played himself into a corner with his performance this season and we'll likely be stuck with him on slightly above a "prove it" vet min similar to Melton. If this happens ,it will make the warriors also more financially flexible than thought this off season, unless there's a Kuminga style standoff (in that case the warriors should cut their losses and let him bet on his wheezing self)

Can Warriors draft another rotation player with their second-round pick?

I'm sure we can. Dunleavy has talent for finding hidden gems in the late 2nd round.

This current playoffs is a perfect illustration of how the Kerr system (built around Steph/Dray) wins championships and excels in the playoffs

Mobility over length

Kerr values mobility over size, hence why you often see multiple guard lineups. Cavs last night had 2 bigs and a a giant wing (Wade) and no mobility - and hence could not aggressively double Brunson and recover.

Kerr would have done far better even with his 4-guard lineups because Podz/Moody/GP2/Steph are all far more mobile and can run around. Also why Kerr sometimes doesn't close with Gui because Gui isn't as mobile and rotates far slower.

Teach role-players to make decisions

We just saw multiple playoff teams fizzle out when the ball was taken outta their star's hands (look at Pistons/Rockets when the ball isn't with Cade/KD). All season long, Kerr forces players like Podz/Gui/Moody to learn to make decisions taking the ball outta Steph's hands.

Versatile rim protectors

Regular season beasts like Pistons/Houston/Cavs have great rim protectors who can eat up rebounds and do well at the rim. Yet those same bigs cannot play aggressive schemes and that removes options off the table in the playoffs.

Duren/Allen/Sengun cannot hard hedge or trap consistently but Dray can. And in the playoffs Duren/Allen can become a liability against certain opponents.

We have notched wins against OKC/Spurs in recent seasons

We literally won 2 against Spurs this year. And won 2 against OKC the yeaar before that.

Kerr still has us competitive on the right nights against these monsters.

To conclude

Kerr is one of the GOAT coaches. If we had a better GM, we'd still be in the mix. There are creative things we could do, but if we never wanna trade any players/picks, it is difficult to build a roster.

I'm hoping we can pull out a good roster because Steph/Kerr deserve it.

Anyone else rooting for the spurs?

I personally just hate the hype behind this thunder team. Everyone talking about how they the next great dynasty and how they could beat the warriors record. Also hate their style of play with shai flopping multiple times a game.

Nice to see the spurs put them in their place and show how hard it is to do a dynasty. Also if I could root for any new dynasty I would rather with Wemby he is just such a freak of nature and plays a fun style to watch.
