Finch?

New England backyard feeder. Thought it was just a female cardinal at first glance. AI says its a house finch, but I couldn't find an image of one with an orange beak like this.

Central Indiana sparrow

I could not get close and it was not calling, Merlin picked up a field sparrow in a different area of the park. IDing sparrows not my forte.

Who is this friend who is sitting on my fence? SoCal

This guy is sitting on my fence in San Diego, California. Who is he?

u/GatorRaine — 1 day ago

I think Merlin is wrong on this one.

South-Central PA, but I also saw them in Sarasota, FL.
Merlin suggested mockingbird, but the beak seams wrong. This bird has a long, pointy beak. There are arcing white stripes on the underside of the wings. The long tail tips upward when standing. Any help is appreciated.

Westminster, CO

What kind of bird is this? Spotted today in Westminster, Colorado. I didn’t have any luck with Merlin.

Spotted in Central Texas.

I saw this beautiful guy snagging grubs out of freshly cut park grass in Central Texas. Google said its a scissor tailed fly catcher, wanted to confirm.

Scottish Highlands

Seen this near Lairg in the Scottish Highlands.

Initially thought it was a Red Kite but looking at the ends of the wings and tail, now thinking it’s more likely to be a Harris Hawk. It was huge. Any experts able to confirm which please (or something else entirely!) I also thought buzzard but feels a bit big for that!

We have been on the hunt for a Golden Eagle frequently sighted round here but fairly confident it’s not that. Thanks!

Juvenile common grackle (?) ISO flick in Fargo, ND

ETA FLOCK not flick (dang autocorrect)

Juvenile common grackle without a flock?

We keep backyard feeders at our home in Fargo, ND and enjoy when bird parents bring their fledglings to the yard. Common grackles are especially fun families.

For about a week we have had a lone juvenile grackle hanging out in our yard who seems unattached to a grackle flock. She is in our yard nearly all day, seems shy but interested in all other birds, and is awkward/derpy around other grackles. And she sticks around the yard when the grackle flocks leave. In short, she appears to be a loner among a species of highly social birds.

For a while we thought she was just taking advantage of the feeders when competition is low, but she really hangs out all day, often hanging out in the dense native flowerbeds or around the tall grass. She does fly and I’ve seen her leave the yard, but she’s nearly always here when we look for her.

This has been going on for a little more than a week now. In response, we’ve been more attentive to keeping our feeders ready and bird bath clean and full (which all the birds appreciate).

My questions: what could cause this loner behavior? What happens if she fails to find a flock? And what can we do to support her safety, nutrition, etc. (we don’t want to interfere— we just want to know how we might improve our space & routines to make her comfortable).

Or maybe I’m wrong about her species?

Who is this little friend?

I have seen plenty of goldfinches around lately but I have never seen this bird. Bremerton Washington, I'm guessing it's a migratory bird.
