Ran across this during a google search, had to share it!

It’s like the bottle melted through. It’s firmly glued to the table and when I tried to remove it a squirt of glue came out. As I was wiping it up around the base of the bottle with paper towels, I swear it was hot and I saw wisps of smoke. It smelled like the normal CA smell but amplified x10!

I’ve never had this happen to a bottle of glue. It’s probably a year old and wasn’t sitting in the sun or near anything that could melt it. Pretty sure the nozzle was clogged last time I tried to use it - a couple weeks ago at most.

What the hell? Anyone else had this happen? Any idea what caused it?

Removed the fried pad, remade the other cold solder joint, soldered in a jumper, and it’s back in working order! I’m so relieved it was something easy! I’ll never take my equipment for granted after this!

1st update

EDIT for those asking: this failure was the result of a cold solder joint due to a manufacturing defect. If you look at the joint next to it prior to repair (2nd pic) you can see that joint is also a cold solder joint and is showing a crack. That is what the failed joint looked like before it burned through.

A crack in the joint introduces excessive resistance, which causes heat, which further deteriorates the joint, causing more resistance and more heat, resulting in a runaway thermal/degredation process that gets worse over time until the joint burns through entirely and causes an open circuit, which is what happened here.

Got this beast up on the bench and started digging into it. Right off the bat I find a burnt pad at the small toroidal transformer on the top board that feeds power to basically the entire preamp and control circuits, relays etc, everything but the output stage. I suspect a cold solder joint caused the burn, especially looking at the joint next to it, which is also cold and cracked, with inadequate solder. A manufacturing defect. Probably been deteriorating for years. I’ll do the repair tomorrow and fingers crossed that’s the end of it and it comes back to life.

Last pic is the main toroidal transformer, for those who are curious. It’s 5” tall by 8” diameter and makes up probably half the weight of this 120lb behemoth!

EDIT: It’s fixed!

Came home to my amp not powering on. Checked the external fuse and an internal one on the top board and they’re both good. I’m absolutely devastated as I’m going through a rough patch and can’t afford to repair or replace it right now.

Hooray TV speakers. Just venting. This fucking sucks.

Turns out funk just isn’t my thing, and now I’ve got these bottles to work through.

Looking for suggestions for drinks I can try with these bottles where funk isn’t the main character, or maybe drinks where any of these particular rums shine in a way that makes it worth keeping that bottle around?

Edit: TBF, I haven’t fully explored tiki drinks yet. I’ve always been under the impression that they’re all funk-centric, and I might be wrong. In reflecting on my post, maybe that’s what I need to be asking - where to start exploring tiki drinks if I’m not fond of funk?

What an incredible pairing! The intense and complex fruit flavors of the Magisterium plays off the orange and dark chocolate wonderfully!

Just moved and getting settled in. I finally got my display shelves set up and trains unpacked. Thought I’d share!

Each model in here has a special place in some way or another, but a couple noteworthy ones are:

The UP Challenger in pic 14, I bought that line drawing at an antique market and then a few years later bought the model at a swap meet. Didn’t notice ‘till I got home, they happen to be the same road number! These get displayed together!

The fireless cooker in pic 15 came from Dick Truesdale’s (the owner of Westside Model Co.) personal layout, the Halfhollow and Hutchinson. Picked it up at a swap meet, one of my prized possessions. So awesome to own a piece of model railroading history.

The Amtrak Superliners: a very special core memory of traveling by myself on the Empire Builder during the phase III era as an impressionable young teen who was SUPER into trains. This specific train holds a special place in my heart. Of course, I have the rest of it; 10 superliner cars total, consisted like the prototype. All are PFM plated brass + a plated brass heritage baggage car, a painted brass Material Handling Car and a pair of FP40 locos from Rapido, all absolutely gorgeous models, I just wish I had the space to display the entire train - it’s like 20 feet long!

There’s more, in boxes, this is about 3/4 of the collection. Just not enough room to display it all!

An orange-forward tropical cocktail with a whisper of coconut and warm cinnamon depth.

Ingredients:

• 1.5 oz Plantaray 3-Star White Rum
• 1 oz Plantaray Cut & Dry Coconut Rum
• 3/4 oz Cointreau
• 1/2 oz lime juice
• 1/4 oz cinnamon syrup
• 1 barspoon demerara syrup

Instructions:

Shake all ingredients with ice. Strain into a chilled coupe.
Garnish with an orange peel or wheel

Polished these four off this weekend. I’ll miss each and every one. Whatever will I do, now that they’ve discontinued the ECS line? I have another bottle of Convocation plus a bottle of Penultimus on the way, but still, I’ll be sad when I run out of ECS

My signal chain: iPad Pro via ApplePlayII to Cambridge CXNv2 > Schitt Freya+ > Classé CA-5200 bi-amped to Legacy Audio Focus HD speakers.

I feel like the Cambridge CXNv2 is the weak link here. Any recommendations for an upgrade?
