The law of superposition: rock layers are deposited on top of older ones

The law of original horizontality: Rock layers are deposited horizontally, so if they aren't flat it must be from some other factor (such as tectonic movement)

The law of lateral continuity: Sediment layers spread out in all directions unless they change type or hit a wall. Therefore rocks that are similar except for being separated by a valley can be assumed to have been originally continuous l.

Law of cross cutting relationships: If a geologic feature cuts across other rock layers, we can assume that it is younger than all of the rock layers it cuts across
