[CA] Covered California: which plan actually gets my mom in-network at City of Hope Duarte for cancer treatment?

My mom (64 years old) has stage 4 lung cancer and has been getting treatment at City of Hope in Duarte. We're in Orange County California, looking at 2026 Covered California plans.

An agent quoted us Health Net / Ambetter HMO Silver at about $107/month. But City of Hope's own website lists only Blue Shield of California EPO/PPO as covering the Duarte main campus (Oscar EPO is listed as out-of-network there). Health Net isn't on the list.

The agent then asked me to pick a medical group: Prospect, Regal, Affiliated Doctors of Orange County, or Direct Network Ambetter HMO.

Please advise, thanks in advance.

Are Patagonia pants sizing consistent across styles/years? Thinking about buying a used pair on eBay

If the Patagonia Twill Traveler Chino Pants in size 30 fit great, does that mean buying a used pair (same style/model) on eBay in the same labeled size 30 will fit perfectly?

Is their sizing generally consistent across different pant styles and production years?

Thanks.

One way LAX to Guatemala booked. Recommendations on route for Central & South America

My goal is to visit all 197 UN countries. I've done most of Europe, Asia, North America, so this is the big remaining chunk (besides Africa). I will land in Guatemala in 2 months and head to Antigua for 2 weeks and my plan is to continue south. I plan to stay 2 weeks per country.

Here's what I'm considering:

Guatamala → Belize → El Salvador → Honduras → Nicaragua → Costa Rica → Panama → Colombia → Ecuador → Peru → Bolivia → Chile → Argentina → Uruguay → Paraguay → Brazil → Guyana → Suriname → French Guiana → Venezuela

Just wanted a sanity check since I need to book my flight/bus for after Guatamala.

Thanks in advance.

California DMV: Paid registration after PNO but missed 30-day deadline for smog. What now?

I went to the CA DMV on May 5, 2026 to register my car after it had been on Planned Nonoperation (PNO) so I could start driving it again. I paid the registration fees, but I didn't complete the required smog check because I was out of town and just came back. The car has remained parked ever since and has not been driven.

Is my registration transaction still open? Should I get the smog inspection first, or do I need to go back to the DMV before getting the smog check?

Thank you.

How much RAM for my next MacBook? M1 Air 16GB getting laggy.

My M1 MacBook Air 16GB is getting laggy and I'm planning my next MacBook. I want it to last at least 5 years. Trying to figure out how much RAM I actually need.

My workflow (everything below runs constantly, all day):

  • Brave with 40+ extensions and 15-20 tabs, plus Safari with ~5 tabs
  • 9 Electron apps at once: Spotify, Telegram, Bitwarden, Claude, TickTick, Discord, VS Code, WhatsApp, Signal
  • 20+ utility apps running in background (Dropbox, Little Snitch, Alfred, Keyboard Maestro (75+ macros), etc)
  • Hammerspoon scripts and Hazel file organization running in the background
  • Xcode + iOS Simulator for hobby app development

What I want:

  • No lag
  • Will drive 2 external 4K 32" monitors
  • 5 years minimum of usage

My terminal outputs:

  • PhysMem: 15G used (2359M wired, 5819M compressor), 338M unused
  • Swap: 5185 MB used / 6144 MB total (vm.swapusage)
  • Compressor: ~5.8 GB occupied, ~25.4 GB stored compressed
  • Free pages: ~64 MB

I'm debating between a 32GB MacBook Air and a 64GB MacBook Pro. I love the Air since I travel a lot, but I'm not sure if it'll lag after a couple of years. My hope is that even if I exceed 32GB, swap on the M5 will be fast enough to be unnoticeable.

Thanks in advance.

Paranoid about using my Anker 25,000mAh after Evan Edinger's MacBook story and a Reddit smoking report. What to do?

I bought an Anker Laptop Power Bank, 25,000mAh about a month ago and I recently saw issues online and I'm not sure if I should discard it.

Issue 1: YouTuber Evan Edinger mentions he has an Anker battery bank but the Anker Laptop Power Bank fried his MacBook Pro's logic board (and his friend Luke's MacBook too)

Issue 2: A Reddit post with the same power bank as mine mentioned his M5 Pro was plugged into an Anker 165W power bank that started smoking, and now the Mac always shows a charging icon even when unplugged

I tried posting on r/anker but it keeps getting removed by autobot since it says I am not yet an active member of r/anker and to join in the conversation on other posts before trying to create a new thread. However even after leaving a couple of comments and subscribing to r/anker, I still get that message which is why I'm posting here.

What should I do with my Anker Laptop Power Bank, 25,000mAh since I'm paranoid of using it now.

EDIT: If I buy a USB-C Charge Protection Cable that prevents overcharging, should that be good enough?

Thanks

Two fainting episodes on commercial flights, no clear trigger (possible vasovagal syncope?)

Age: Early 30s Sex: Male Height: 5'8" (173 cm) Weight: 155 lb (70.3 kg) Medical conditions: None Medications: Finasteride/Minoxidil Smoking/Drugs: No

I'm trying to understand the likely cause of two fainting episodes I've had on commercial airline flights.

The first episode occurred around 2015. The second occurred about a year ago. In both cases, the episode happened after I had been in the air for a few hours.

During the 2015 episode, a woman sitting next to me said that I raised my arms to shoulder level, curled my fingers, and then lost consciousness. I have no memory of the event itself.

During the more recent episode last year, I suddenly began sweating profusely and developed black-and-white/tunnel vision. I felt like I was about to faint, but I was able to prevent it by taking slow, deep breaths.

For context, I have taken hundreds of flights and have only had 2 episodes while flying. I have never fainted outside of flying, with the exception of blood draws.

What confuses me is that during the airline episodes I do not recall being dehydrated, anxious, stressed, overheated, or fatigued. I typically drink plenty of water and get up periodically to stretch during flights.

Outside of airplanes and blood draws, I have never fainted during normal daily activities. I exercise regularly, drive, work, and function normally.

I had routine blood work done a few months ago, and everything was normal.

For additional context, I was considering learning to fly a small Cessna aircraft and eventually pursuing a private pilot license as a hobby. Tomorrow I have a discovery flight (test trial) with a pilot.

My concern is that a doctor may not be able to determine the exact cause of these episodes. If the medical evaluation is unrevealing and no definitive cause is found, would that generally be considered a reason to stop pursuing flight training due to the risk of fainting while flying?

Thanks.

California: setting up a special needs trust and conservatorship for my brother, want to make sure I'm not missing anything

My mom has cancer and I'm trying to get the legal and financial side sorted while she's still able to. My brother is an adult with developmental disabilities. He cannot understand or sign legal documents, and he relies on government assistance.

My mom's life insurance is currently split 50/50 between me and my brother. The concern is that if my brother receives his half directly, it would put him over the asset limits and cost him his benefits. I've been told to get a third-party special needs trust.

Lastly I want to verify I need to get a limited conservatorship for my brother since he can't understand or sign anything.

Is that basically all the legal actions I need?

Thanks in advance.

Fainted twice on commercial airline flights. Concern before starting PPL training?

I'm in my early 30s and am seriously considering starting PPL training. I already scheduled my discovery flight for this week. I'm fit, active, and healthy.

One thing that's been on my mind is that I've fainted twice on commercial airline flights. The first time was around 2015, and the second was about a year ago. Other than those two incidents (and fainting during blood draws), I have never passed out, and I've been on hundreds of commercial airline flights throughout my life. As for the reason why I passed out twice, I'm not sure. I woke up 15 minutes later and was perfectly fine.

I haven't started flight training yet, and before I commit the time and money, I'm trying to determine if this will prevent me from getting my PPL.

Thanks in advance.

Is a PPL worth it if I'll realistically only fly once every month or two?

I'm in my 30's in Southern California considering getting my PPL as a hobby since it was something I always wanted to do when I was a kid.

The local flight schools I've looked at estimate around $15k–$25k to earn a PPL and my concern isn't the training cost as much as whether I'll actually use the license enough afterward.

Realistically, I think I'd only fly about once a month, and sometimes maybe only once every other month. Another factor is that I travel a lot. I spend several months at a time outside the states (mostly around Asia and Europe) for a total of to 6-8 months per year. That means there may be long periods where I don't fly at all for a few months.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: To be even more realistic I’ll most likely fly once every 2-3 months.

Need reliable Wi-Fi for a 2-hour video call near City of Ten Thousand Buddhas (tomorrow 10 AM - 12 PM)

My mom and I are visiting the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas and I need a reliable internet connection for a video call tomorrow from 10 AM to noon.
The temple’s Wi-Fi isn’t accessible to the public, my phone’s hotspot is getting under 10 Mbps, and the nearby Starbucks Wi-Fi is also under 10 Mbps. None of these are reliable enough for a video call.
Does anyone know a nearby spot with fast, stable Wi-Fi I could use for just those two hours? I want to avoid using library Wi-Fi because I don’t want to disturb anyone during my video meeting. Thank you in advance.

LOT Airlines in Krakow asked me for a second form of ID beyond my passport. Is this normal?

I'm a US citizen and was checking in at the LOT Airlines counter at Krakow Airport. The agent asked me for a second form of ID in addition to my passport. I happened to have my driver's license on me, which I almost never travel with since I usually just carry my passport.

I've been to 40+ countries and this is the first time I've ever been asked for this. My passport has always been sufficient everywhere else.

Why would an airline ask for a second ID when a passport is already sufficent? And my name on my ticket matches my passport.

In addition, If I hadn't had my driver's license with me, what would have actually happened?

Thanks.

Traveling 9 months/year - what's the best US plan to keep active while abroad and still cover ~50GB/month when home

TLDR: Traveling ~9 months/year internationally (using local eSIMs abroad), home in USA 2-3 months/year needing ~50GB/month domestic data, and must keep a real US number active for SMS verification. Best plan?

Currently on Mint Mobile but I'm reconsidering my options. I travel internationally ~9 months out of the year, so I rely on eSIMs abroad, but every now and then I'm home for 2-3 months and actually need a solid domestic plan. But when I am home (USA) I need an esim that will allow me to use ~50 GB a month.

Keep in mind I need to keep a real US number active for SMS verification (not everyone accepts Google Voice for SMS verification).

Any recommendations?

edit: I forgot to mention, I would like to be able to downgrade the plan to save money while I am abroad.

Thank you in advance.

I'm getting my roof replaced and called a few roofers, all with 5-star ratings on Google and Yelp.

During one of the calls, I mentioned that my garage was converted to an ADU and I wasn't sure if it had a permit, so I asked if the roof replacement could be done without pulling a permit. The roofer said he'd need one but would make sure not to mention the ADU to the inspector.

For context, my mom was the one who did the conversion years ago, so I honestly don't know the full history of what was or wasn't permitted. I inherited this situation.

There's another roofer I'd rather hire since he's $3,000 cheaper and has equally good reviews. My concern is that the first roofer, knowing about my unpermitted ADU, might report it to the county out of spite if I don't go with him.

For peace of mind, should I just hire the first roofer who is more expensive since he already knows about the situation? Or am I overthinking this?

Thanks.
