“Bunuel & Dali’s Un Chien Andalou (1929) is not ‘meaningless’ in the conventional sense.” Discuss

Obviously it’s made by Bunuel & Dali and is therefore full of surrealistic dream imagery and seemingly disconnected scenes but, at about the fourth time of watching last year (each time separated by many years), it seemed like a relatively straightforward representation of the various stages of a long relationship. Admittedly ‘relatively’ is doing a lot of work but still… it made a sort of sense I hadn’t really noticed before, one I’m not even convinced the directors / writers were aware of. Thoughts?

Why is so much hauntological music TRYING to be eerie & ‘hauntological’?

I know lots of people are copying early Ghost Box (not very well), BoC (quite well; they’re even copying themselves quite well), The Caretaker, Burial etc but, in the UK at least, the endless sampling of scary Public Info. films or Threads or Sapphire and Steel or Rabies warnings etc etc seems to be missing the point a little. And is getting really boring. There’s plenty of accidentally eerie stuff in 70s / 80s TV… maybe we could lend the new generation of hauntologists a hand at suggesting some new avenues…

Any female-fronted / dominated post rock bands I should be aware of?

Obviously I know that a lot of the bands in here are instrumental but I was thinking of something like Gregor Samsa…

Maldoror & A Rebours - is there anything else that scratches that weird itch?

Any decadent surrealism or surrealist decadence that I’m missing? Doesn’t have to be French or fin de siécle …

Are most of the ‘weird girls’ just, er, girls?

Been reading and enjoying a lot of ‘weird girl’ literature & appreciate the category to a certain extent but, ones where they are murderers etc excepted, a lot of the main characters just seem like an unfiltered take on what girls are often actually like?

CAVEAT: Maybe I need to get some better friends…

We should be talking much more about great Teams than great Players

Football is a team game & discussions should be centred around that. With the possible exception of players like Maradona, who seemed to be able to ‘carry’ mediocre teams, ‘great’ players are great because they play in teams and systems that suit them, and ultimately rely on other ‘great’ players who play other, less glamorous, roles.

A ‘great’ player sometimes might only pass sideways, or only ever intercept, or only ever run into space, or be able to play as a super sub etc etc - all these are essential components in a great team and yet only some of these players are discussed as ‘great’ players.

Which one next?

Bought a lot of books this Summer on my travels. Not sure which one I should read next. Narrowed it down to these. Might leave the massive Jonathan Meades one for the winter since it hardly fits in my bag for on the go reading.

Possibly popular opinion: most ‘psychedelic’ music isn’t psychedelic

I’m thinking particularly of Psychedelic Music Festivals here in the UK, where vaguely acidic electronic whooshes or fuzz guitar seem to dominate. To me, these lack the essential qualities of psychedelic music and fail to dance in the the playful grey-area between abstract existential fear and intense joy and absurdity and despair and silliness and cosmic irrelevance.

Might be just me but, to my (possibly damaged) ears, music that DOES feel psychedelic includes:

Nurse With Wound, Coil, France, Gnod, Faust, Can, Spacemen 3, Global Communications, the Anticon hiphop stuff like Clouddead, the Wyrd Wild West scene including people like Kemper Norton, IX Tab and Rapid Eye Electronics Ltd., some bits of Aphex Twin, Master Musicians of Joujouka in all their iterations, Catherine Ribeiro, hyper-pop ‘rappers’ like Ashnikko, Smote, Marina Herlop, Ginevra Nervi, Unicazurn, Lucretia Dalt, Holden and Zimpel, Swans, The United States of America and spin-offs, Ukaea…

I could go on. There’s lots out there but maybe others could offer some up for consideration?

What book would complete the summer reading quartet?

Maldoror’s a re-read because it obscurely reminds me of the Summer but the other two are new to me & they’re in the suitcase as well… just need one more, I think…
