Coach Worth Certification

I’m working to become a fencing coach. I’m considering applying a holistic approach to my students with the ability to not only talk about fencing but also personal training and possibly nutrition down the road. My students are ages 10 to 60. I’m also getting ready to start a Masters program in coaching.

My biggest concerns for my people are avoiding injury, encouraging and maintaining mental health, and being successful without losing the wonder of the sport.

To just provide sport specific training advice to my students, is independent study sufficient or should I aim for a program like NSCA-CSCS? I have an unrelated doctorate, and the masters in coaching should play into that, I think.

Also, what study materials would you recommend to get started in general. I have a library replete with sport psychology and youth sport psychology books, but would take additional recommendations for those as well.

Thank you!

Alternative to Freestate

So, I've been going to Freestate for about 10 years. Did all my training there, purchased all my handguns there, and became a gold member as soon as it was offered. After the last 24 hours, I'm ready to investigate other options and perhaps cancel my membership.

Are there other ranges in the area with similar offerings? By similar offerings I mean with range, quality training, FFL, and firearm and silencer purchases.

Thank you.

Edit: I'm not posting to badmouth Freestate. I am simply looking for other options at this point. There are people there I like and respect a lot. It might just no longer be for me.

Beginning GM for Gaming

Hey, I'm looking to start up an inclusive, no-drama, roleplaying group. I am happy to GM and want to do so. However, I haven't really roleplayed regularly since the 80's, so this will require a bit of patience. The games I am focusing on are:

Lancer
Traveller
Starfinder
Pathfinder

I am open to other games as well but these are the ones I'm reading up on now.

My thoughts were to start with a late afternoon Saturday at a gaming store. Once everything is finalized, I am able to host in Baltimore, in Federal Hill. I do have pets; two large, friendly dogs, and a cat (announcing for allergy purposes).

First Hammer

So, my son had a great time at our first blacksmithing class and is looking for more classes to sign us up for ASAP. We are in Maryland. I would like to encourage him. So, I thought getting him his own hammer and gloves for these classes would be a good start. So, I am looking at cross peen hammers and gloves. I am here to ask for either 1. Recommendations on those items (hammer and gloves), or 2. Better ways to encourage him.

Feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you

It Begins - Maybe

My adult son and I are taking a blacksmithing course tonight. He has been talking about it for a while and it was something I wanted to do since way before I was his age. Thank you all for making this seem accessible. We live downtown in a major city and so cannot set up a home forge, but we are both eager to discover the next possible steps tonight.

Texas Case

I just wanted to point out that Mr. Wang, of Mahdavi Bacon Halfhill & Young PLLC, the firm that has entered its appearance in the majority of these recent cases against USA Fencing, withdrew his appearance from the Texas case. As for background, on June 3, 2026, the United States District Court for the District of Colorado in another case issued an Order stating:

Mr. Wang's affidavit, submitted with Plaintiffs' Response, confirms rather than rebuts the basis for revocation. He now concedes that paragraph 3 of his verified pro hac vice motion was "inaccurate" (Wang Aff. ¶ 3); that his suspension arose from registration failures beginning in 2016, not during the "COVID period" as the verified motion claimed (Wang Aff. ¶ 5(1)"(6)); that when he represented to this Court in June 2025 that he was "in the process of being reinstated," the only reinstatement motion he had filed was rejected and returned to him in 2024 (Wang Aff. ¶ 5(10)"(11)); and the emergency room visit at which the dictation-error defense relies did not occur until September 2025, three months after the verified motion was signed (Wang Aff. ¶ 5(13)). Mr. Wang also asserts he has since refiled the reinstatement motion (Wang Aff. ¶ 5(15)), but provides no filing date, case number, receipt, or copy of the refiled motion. Plaintiffs' single defense " blaming his wife for a dictation error during illness" fails for three reasons grounded in Mr. Wang's own sworn statements. First, the affidavit's chronology defeats the defense. The hospitalization it invokes occurred in September 2025, three months after the June 17, 2025, verified motion. Wang Aff. ¶ 5(13). And to the extent Mr. Wang claims he was symptomatic earlier (Wang Aff. ¶ 5(12)), an attorney who knows he cannot read what he signs has an obligation not to verify it. Colo. RPC 3.3(a)(1).

Second, the affidavit confirms that Mr. Wang was in the United States, not China as previously stated, throughout the COVID period. He now swears he returned to the U.S. at "the end of 2019" and "have stayed in the U.S. since then." Wang Aff. ¶ 5(5). The verified motion's representation that he was "experiencing infirmity in China . . . during the COVID period" is therefore false on both location and cause.

Third, the "in the process of being reinstated" representation was false when made. Mr. Wang concedes his June 2023 motion for reinstatement was returned in 2024 and that he did not refile until "recently" (Wang Aff. ¶ 5(10), (11), (15)).1 For nearly two years between the rejected application and the verified motion, no reinstatement proceeding existed. C.R.C.P. 205.3(2)(b)(iii) requires accurate disclosure of "the date of the action, the nature of the violation, and the penalty imposed." Mr. Wang's verified motion misstated the cause, the timing, and the status. Revocation is the proportionate response under these facts. Wherefore the request to revoke pro hac vice admission of Xiaolin Wang is GRANTED.

This Order and all the associated paperwork was filed in the case in Texas. Local counsel filed to withdraw Mr. Wang's appearance the very next day on June 17, 2026.

Newbie

So, I took my kids to the VA Ren Fest recently and they took issue with my not dressing up. They wanted to see the blacksmith performance. So, I sat them down there, and went all in. They are teenagers and respectful and appreciative of other’s efforts. I haven’t done this before. So, how did I do and what am I missing? I got a rapier as well. Yes, I know the sunglasses are not period appropriate, but there are reasons.

What Can I Do?

I'm interested in starting to learn longsword. The group I'm looking at doesn't have an available beginners session until October. There are barriers to every sport, and I guess space and popularity is the barrier to this one. Assuming I decide to sign up for the October session, in 4.5 months and my interest does not wane in that time, is there anything I can do on my own to start? I don't mean standing in my back yard and developing foolish habits that would have to be broken, but rather, study, buy gear or wait until being recommended gear by the beginners session folk, or other things?

Thanks

Vincenti and Hughes Suit Dismissed

The federal court dismissed the case yesterday. In my opinion, the decision dismissing the case is exactly the type of decision that anyone with legal training would expect in all these cases brought by FFO attorneys and members like Jason Liu.
