Curry Barker [Obession] is a genius director for these subtle easter eggs.
Now that Obsession has crossed the $400 million mark, I wanted to talk about some easter eggs and things we may have missed, that make such a fantastic low budget film even better. For basic context [SPOILER ALERT]
I will refer to Nikki as Wish Nikki whenever I mean the entity possessing and controlling Nikki.
- Wish Nikki is not obsessed with Bear in any human way at all. It is an entity who's sole purpose is to love bear and make sure he loves her unconditionally. It has no grasp of the realities or logic of human love. In the first 2/3rds of the movie, Wish Nikki knows that Bear loves his cat, and in an attempt to gain his love emulates cat like behaviours and movements.
For example - In the 3:45 AM scene where she was watching bear sleep, she moves like a cat. Some people have pointed out that she waits by the door for bear to come back home, literally not moving for hours while he was at work. In her vomit, you can see undigested cat kibble.
Throughout the movie, Barker amply hints that Bear has a true connection with Sarah, one that he never had with either Nikki or Wish Nikki. After Wish Nikki murdered Sarah and was supposed to dump the body, she scalps Sarahs hair and tattoos and wears it to try and win Bear's affection by literally 'becoming' her.
Throughout the movie, Nikki always appears on the right of Bear and Sarah is always on his left. This subtle easter egg became super obvious when Sarah says "You were supposed to kiss me, because I was on your left".
Nikki's last name was Freeman. Ironic since she spent most of the movie a slave to Bear's obsession with her and what he forced her to endure even when he knew it wasn't her.
The creepy Hansel and Gretel inspired monologue by Wish Nikki was Nikki's way of trying to reach out to Bear and her friends by trying to convey that she thought of Bear as a brother and was being twisted and controlled as the verses progressed to be about incestuous, obsessive sexual relationship.
During a brief bedroom scene right after Bear makes his wish, we can see the clock shows 16:55. This wouldn't make sense considering the lighting did not reflect any time similar to that. However, 1655 was the year of the first judicial ruling that legally recognised a person as property for life. It shows up on screen right when Nikki permanently loses herself to Bear's possessiveness.
The customer service worker for the One Wish Willow is actually voiced by Curry Barker himself.
