R/CharacterOptimization

Hi! I’m looking for some build advice. I’m currently playing a level 5 Astral Self Monk (Gem Dragonborn Amethyst ) with the Mobile feat and the Sailor background.I’m trying to decide what to take next: another feat or an ASI. I’m also planning to take my next three levels in Twilight Cleric. The campaign is using the 2024 rules, and I’m open to both official 5e and homebrew suggestions. What would you recommend for my next step in the build? “My Party Might Be Turning Into Murderhobos and I Don’t Know How to Handle It”

So I’m in a D&D group with a mix of experienced and brand‑new players. We have six PCs:

- two monks (a dragonborn and a wood elf),

- three spellcasters (a shadow sorcerer fairy, a human druid, and a deep gnome illusion wizard),

- and finally a human fighter.

The Campaign Setup

We’re in a new campaign where a devil has tasked the party with investigating a forgotten kingdom ruled by corrupted dukes. Right now we’re in Gluttony’s domain.

Our investigation started in the slums and a food storage warehouse.

Incident #1 — The Slums

We met starving townsfolk acting strangely. The dragonborn monk tried to give them food (he’s genuinely a good guy), but they attacked him. The DM said their bite causes necrotic damage and gives a “hunger craving” level that disrupts concentration and spellcasting. Because he’s a monk, he resisted it.

He told the party to knock people out, not kill them.

He knocked out three.

Most of the rest of the party killed everyone except the other monk and the druid (they were split from the group).

Later we learned from an NPC druid that the townsfolk were showing early signs of ghoul fever, and he’s working on a cure. So the dragonborn’s instinct to spare them was correct.

Incident #2 — The Murderhobo Red Flags

After regrouping, we went to report to the town guard captain on the wealthy side of town.

On the way, three players (fighter, fairy sorcerer, and druid) started talking about killing rich people and taking their stuff.

The rest of us shut that down immediately.

Incident #3 — The Docks Fight

At the docks, the guard captain and his deckhand summoned animated armor and flying coins to attack us.

Three party members were surrounded by guards and armor. The other three were in danger but had a clear view of the enemies.

Here’s where things went off the rails:

- The fairy player (a 65‑year‑old woman IRL, new to D&D) was told clearly by the wood elf monk which enemies were hostile.

- Instead of attacking the animated armor or coins, she attacked a guard.

- The DM asked if she was sure.

She said yes, claiming “that’ll teach you to be specific,” even though the monk was specific.

- She doubled down and attacked the guard again.

This caused all the guards to turn hostile.

Then it escalated:

- The druid (in tiger form) killed and ate a guard.

- The fighter also started killing guards.

- The monks tried to de‑escalate but had disadvantage and low social skills.

Eventually the captain fled, saying he’d report us to the duke.

Aftermath

The wood elf chewed out the fairy for endangering the party.

The dragonborn backed him up, pointing out:

- These guards were commoners, not soldiers.

- They likely had families.

- The party has now lost the element of surprise.

- The duke will see us as a threat.

- The military (200 years old) is now hostile.

- The townsfolk will refuse to talk to us.

- Our favorite inn and an allied NPC are now in danger.

- The duke may hire adventurers to kill us.

And while the dragonborn is giving this lecture, the druid is still casually chewing on the guard he ate earlier — which only makes the whole situation feel even more unhinged.

The fairy suggested running away.

The DM shut that down by showing what happened to former PCs who quit the mission: they became mind‑controlled thralls of the devil.

So now the party realizes:

Fight the duke or die. Those are the only options left.

---

My Question

How should players or DMs deal with this kind of situation?

Is this something that needs addressing out‑of‑game, or is it just part of the story now?
