Finished the game a few days ago. Incredible.

As a lifelong JRPG guy, I've dabbled in it all. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Tales, Trails, Lunar, SMT/Persona, Nier, Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default, Golden Sun, Atelier, etc. Every notable game or series. Eclectic stuff like Blue Reflection and Arc Rise Fantasia. Xenosaga and Xenoblade too.

I love Xenogears, and I'm sure that love will only grow with time. Fei is one of my favorite characters ever, now, and a top tier protagonist. How do I describe his character succinctly? I can't, but you understand what I love about him and his relationship with Elly.

Should note that the Evangelion manga (NOT the anime) is my favorite story of all time. No waffling about that because I'm sure the sub is sick of it, but I will bring up one similarity that has nothing to do with actual subject matter: that these are complex stories told simply. Past the sci-fi and philosophy, these are stories about people learning to love themselves and carve a place to belong with their loved ones. The scenes of Fei floating in the void, the 'coward,' the reconciliation with Id, all of it is so vivid. Despite the game's problems during development, what we got was already so well-presented.

Battles became repetitive and the dungeons became a slog. The classic JRPG problem where half the cast simply stops mattering after their introductory story arc rears its head, once again. Never want to do a second playthrough, truth be told. But what a fantastic game.

But I know the story of Fei and Elly will stick with me for the rest of my days. Just thinking about the return after the final boss bring a tear to my eye. Lots of stream of consciousness without too much depth, I know, as part of me is still processing the chunky plot, but the infatuation was boiling over. I don't want any rerelease; I want a full-length novel. A manga, if a good adaptation doesn't already exist. I've seen a light I didn't know I was searching for on an already sunny day. What an unforgettable experience. I'm a convert.

Why I love handhelds

Nothing like some Sekiro in the car to relax after a long day... my base Ally X with grips from Comfort Grips. I love being in my car so native installations are a must. Even seven years ago when Sekiro came out, if you said I could chill in my third space with it I'd have called you insane.

Saber of Twin Tides mod

Gives >!The Tracker's!< moveset to the Two Dragons Sword. After every R2 parry, normal R2 backstep (now has i-frames) and Link Emergency Dodge (now has attacks), you can launch up to four Wind of Swords at the cost of a fable bar each, and it can perfect guard. New handle fable art Tidal Shift immediately pulls out your second weapon and does its blade fable art.

Carved case "Siobhan"

Incredible case from Carved. Had my S24 Ultra for two years and this is not only the prettiest case but is incredibly protective - it's their own branded TPU and there's a suede backing. Smoother than I thought it'd be but it's real wood.

Laxative crushed

Difficulty 5 hitless, Two Dragons Sword.

She is so punishable with Falcon Eyes, especially in Phase 2 when she lands. You can do the sword parry on her final aura blast when she's staggered, but I didn't want to risk it. As much of a Pale Knight fan I may be, nailing the R2 parry is the best feeling in Soulslikes, and I've played most. What great design.

Swamp Moster is peak?

Always was.

Difficulty 5 hitless, Two Dragons Sword. Mastering him made me love him. Arena size also seems fine to me? I never got the hate.

Hardest challenge of my gaming career

Arlecchino hitless, Two Dragons Sword, Difficulty 5 NG+2.

Phase 1 was like playing whack-a-mole, deciding on the fly which quick combo starters and finishers were possible to parry with the R2. Phase 2 meanwhile was like balancing on a wire, focusing on perfect timing to match his slower attacks, almost watching in slow motion his blades and claws form to strike. I'm lucky he didn't do his leaping fury attack with the homing sawblades.

Orphan and Promised Consort were hard but didn't drive me to master them, especially when their games lack an excellent boss rematch feature like Lies of P and Sekiro. Arlecchino beats them as a boss anyway and is hands-down the greatest in the genre - the perfect trinity of difficulty, readability, and fairness.

Weeks of learning the Two Dragons Sword to master the parry made an already tough challenge like scaling a mountain. Easily the most thrilling experience I've had with the medium. I feel like Ongbal. Thank you Neowiz and Round 8 Studios.

I'm an official convert to the Two Dragons Sword

I like to swap to the Rose Sword for By the Name of the Rose. Nothing like wielding the blades of two heroes.

"For Alidoro"

They were right, just learn the Two Dragons Sword.

In remembrance of a great hero. I only wish >!you could prevent his death and he'd replace Parrot at the hotel, finally able to watch over his sister.!<

R2 never felt so good.

Using the Pale Knight is actually the end point for unga bunga builds, but it's so much cooler than big swords or clubs because it's a goddamn gunblade. My first hitless too.
