How did you get out of the biggest funk of your life?

TLDR; unemployed woman in existential crisis after long unemployment not seeing any meaning or purpose in anything anymore. Potentially depressed but also just very tired of life.

I am late 39 and wow, the past 2.5 years maybe even longer I am just not excited about life at all anymore. It started with me getting laid off from a very high paying career that I also felt burned out and really didnt enjoy. Luckily, I had quite some savings (a bit more than 600k) and also in my country I got decent unemployment benefits at first. I decided I dont wanna go back into my sales career so I just went and traveled. That was amazing for a year but also felt a bit purposeless connecting with transient people all the time. I than came come almost a year ago and I am ashamed to say this; I have just been hanging out on my couch, watching youtube, reading some books and applied for some random jobs where I after several interview rounds didnt get an offer. I am in Europe btw. I cant believe how quick this year flew by! Before this time I have always been a big traveler and loved that but travel just doesnt spark me as much anymore and I also find it harder to do all this solotravel.

Long story short; i think it must be depression since I have really negative thoughts such as what's the point of all of this, why bother, I hope I dont have to wake up etc... I am not close to my family, since they were alcoholics and would beat me up quite alot. I also realised in this time off work that most friends dont care as much as I thought, they are just busy with their lives.. Obviously i am not dating in this state.

I feel like I dont know what to do with myself. I somehow manage to go to the gym 4 times a week and other days go walking so I dont just ruminate at home but otherwise I have totally withdrawn from social life and just surviving through the day.

Has anyone experienced something similar or has an idea for me what I could do to get back to life somehow again?

THANK YOU

After years of solotravel, has anyone worked as a tour-guide (such as g adventures)?

I am exploring new careers. After 80 countries of solo travel I have been thinking why not be a tour leader?

How is it working for one of those companies? Also, how often do you guide tours? Do you get tired of the guests? How is the pay?

(hope this is the right group to ask!)

thanks

EDIT; i forgot to mention i am native in 3 languages and speak another two pretty fluently, grew up in 2 countries and lived in another 3. Are there any actual g-adventures guides here that i could dm?

Where would you go to just stand still and "do nothing"?

I am not sure this is the right group. I am late 30s, from Europe, I used to travel alot in my 20s and early 30s, mostly backpacking. I lost that version of myself a bit, I guess partner and career etc influenced that. Without wanting to go into all the details; I have a decent amount saved (approx 500k) and I want to opt out of western rat race society but my home country is quite expensive and I dont wanna be here anymore. I often feel like all I want to do is just go on walks, sleep, cook some food, read books and maybe learn a new skill.

Where would you go? I am female btw

I just want to go live somewhere simple, in nature, that doesnt cost a leg. I appreciate warm cultures. I know wherever I go, there I am but I have been really depressed the past few years and no therapy can help. I feel like I need to be somewhere that reminds me while life is worth living (dont worry I am not suicidal).

Can anyone think of a country or place?

My dream would be New Zealand but it is too expensive so I have been contemplating South Africa, Bolivia, Chile or even somewhere in the balkans.

Help me think about this - sold MSFT calls

Hi all,

Pre-earnings I sold a MSFT call for premium 600USD, expiry 5th September, Strike 450. The stock was at 380USD back than. I have 250stocks, I only sold one Call.

Now the stock shot up to my surprise and we are at 490USD. I know people here always just say roll it but does that make sense really? Call is now 48.11USD.

I do want to keep the stock and take gains probably around 550USD a stock, at least for 100 and leave the other 150 units.

Would it make most sense to wait until expiry date before I decide what to do? Theta is at 23.7 atm.

The other option I was thinking is to let them call away and write a Put with strike 450USD, with risk I dont get entry to stock back.

How do you deal with that? I guess I got a bit greedy because the stock wasnt moving anywhere. I bought at 236USD back in 2022 I think. So still a gain but yeah, wanted to ride it out further. Ps no capital gains in my country....

Are people actually enjoying this hot summer?

I used to like summer but it was never this hot... this summer I have been staying indoor alot besides the week I spent in Denmark and another in the mountains. I just cant enjoy the heat in Zurich.... I walk out and I feel like I am in Bangkok (without the aircons). I am also more mindful about my skin the past few years so I dont tan. I often walk in the forest however....

Are people feeling similar or maybe it is more me? I feel almost a bit summer-depressed, which I never felt before.. might also be worse sleep...

Thanks!!

Wanting to be saved / rescued & waiting for someone to come and help

Hi all,

I realised I have this pattern running alot of my life. I subconsciously hope that someone will save me or can help me get my life together and when people dont show up that way, I somehow feel resentful. Ouch. I grew up as the parentified child, protecting my mother from my abusive, alcoholic father. I never got to be a child really, we were war immigrants from the Balkan region. Fast forward to my late 30s; my life has kind of fallen apart in a lot of ways. The high paying career I pursued but kind of hated has collapsed, I cant keep up the stress anymore and I have been laid off. Luckily, I have savings. I have been trying to figure out what I am doing next but somehow I dont really know who I am or what I want and I have been waiting for someone to come and help me, for example my mother or my sibling. This of course is not gonna happen because they dont have the capacity. I also realise I always pick man who can "give me a direction in life".

I feel very alone but I at least realised the pattern; hyper independance, exhaustion, collapse, falling back into a child-like state & wanting to be rescued. I guess they would call this the inner child.

I dont know if this resonates with anyone but just wanted to share. Anyone who overcome that pattern? At least I know now what I am working with even though it feels really heavy.

I guess in a way humans were never supposed to navigate this life all on their own but here we are in the modern world.

I also wonder, how much help can we expect from others? Or is this something a therapist/coach would help you with?!

Anyone else just feels indifferent about life? Like your life energy is changing

In my 20s I used to be excited about so many things, I guess because I did them for the first time. I travelled to 70 countries, lived and studied abroad, had alot of flings etc, I loved life but also had alot of moments of insecurity etc. I know these days those were existential fears that are just part of the human experience.

In my early 30s I go super fit and was in a really nice relationship that ended sadly. I than got into a high paying career but that kind of didnt end well. The past 3 years or so (i am 39 now), I just dont feel excited about anything anymore. I just feel like one day I will die anyway and nothing "gives me life sparks" anymore somehow. I find friendships and romantic relationships draining. The thing I still enjoy is working out but even that I see how my body is slowly changing and I know I wont be young forever.

Do you think this is just part of getting older? I wonder if this could also be apathy..

How has your "life energy" changed over the years?

[TW] Anyone else feeling traumatised by hell week (luteal)?

I just had a really rough week pre-period. I haven't had such a bad cycle in ages... I was feeling very negative with SI thoughts and thinking about leaving the country, arguments with my mother and blocking her on whatsapp after she said something insensitive, selling some shares because I was thinking the stock market will go to hell but actually it was just one bad day (lost 3k)... I didnt go to work this week which probably wasnt the best since maybe i could have distracted myself but who knows what would have happened. I also ate a crazy amount of food.....

I realise how traumatising those weeks can be for my overall mental health and just being. I listened to a podcast today (pmdd chick) and she said how sometimes those thoughts can become a self-fulfilling prophecy because sometimes we enhance them by being scared of luteal phase coming up.

This condition is just crazy!! Got my period and feeling relieved... ps advice is OK if you want to share.....

Ladies - how do you ask the "universe/god" for a sign?

I am asking this in particular women who have more life experience than me. I am 39, single. I have been out of work for some time from a high paying career. I feel quite lost and like I dont have a next life goal or how to figure out what to do next with my life which has been making me apathetic. I took a year to travel around the world and loved it but now back home I just dont seem to see a next step somehow. I am not religious but I feel like isnt there a way "for life" to show me the next step? How did you navigate hard decisions in your life? Did you just follow your instincts? What helped you make good decisions?

When I was younger/in my 20s/early 30s, I fell like things just came my way naturally but lately I just feel quite blocked.

I dont know if this is a weird question but I thought I will try and see what comes here...

Thanks! 😄

Deregister (Abmeldung) from Switzerland & not pay taxes anywhere?

I am thinking to go travelling for the next few years and live in different countries for 3-6 months each, maybe longer, depends on visa etc. I have been reading online and my main goal is when leaving Switzerland not to pay taxes and health insurance.

When I was younger I traveled for 15 months and I deregistered at the Gemeinde and they asked me where I am going? I said just backpacking. They said they need an address so I just made up some address in Mexico 😄 They didnt check or anything. I just got international health insurance.

Anyway, now that I am basically FIRE I have an extra issue; what happens with my IBKR account? I mean I dont get mail or anything and I wouldnt care as much to get back my dividend taxes but is it possible just to not register in any country and not pay any taxes anywhere?!

Or does it make sense to register a company somewhere in case I get asked when entering some countries, where my domicile is? Or could I just put in my old address in Zurich? I also have a second European passport besides Swiss so I will research that country too.

I really wonder how that works! Not sure this is the right group but I thought I will start here.

Thanks!

People who were never seen in childhood, how did you figure out what you wanted from your life?

Having lived as an immigrant child, emotionally neglected and abused, I dont truly know who I am. Sometimes I have glimpses and I feel like I am this world traveler free spirit that wants to teach yoga. Next I am back into my corporate lady role. It is confusing!

I have worked in tech, banking and HR. I ended up working there because that's what was best to do to make a living but I always felt miserable and ended up getting fired a few times just for not being great at my job. Now in my late 30s I feel so lost, I cant go back to my old life but I also dont know what to do next?! I somehow have many skills but really dont know who I wanna be. I think part of it is shame and not knowing who I am and showing up with something that I cant control would put me in a certain light where I might be perceived as not good enough. So I go back to old roles and boxes.

Has anyone had this experience? Who are we when we aren't our "survival, role self"?
