The state of Asian American fine dining in the US.

So, I hope you guys are all familiar with the Michelin star rating system (separate from the guide recommended ones), that in the US specifically are mostly fine dining. There’s a high emphasis on decorative food, high quality ingredients, taste, service, and ambiance of the restaurant for the dining experience.

most Asian Michelin starred restaurants in the US are Japanese. French cuisine is also popular for Michelin stars (Michelin came from France). Japanese cuisine and French cuisine shares a lot of cooking and culinary values which explains why they are over represented. there’s also quite a lot of Korean restaurants with stars in the US too. Some of the Korean and Japanese ones are considered fusion technically.

On the other hand, there’s only two Chinese Michelin star restaurants in the US both with one star: Mister Jiu’s in SF Chinatown and Yingtao in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen. both are fusion cuisine (but Yingtao is much more expensive).

I’ve been to Mister Jiu and basically sampled all their dishes including their signature Peking duck (it’s more of a roast Peking hybrid than a traditional Peking duck). I also had wine and dessert too. it was very good food and experience and definitely a special occasion visit for family celebrations, receiving friends from abroad, and date nights for couples. the view from the window was also very pretty. some people on yelp criticized the Peking duck because it wasn’t traditional but I still thought it was very strong and since it’s a fusion restaurant it shouldn’t be compared with traditional recipes.

It is very evident that this restaurant doesn’t target the Chinatown locals and is geared towards a wealthier clientele from elsewhere who uber in, eat, and leave. (I’m also not a local and we also drove in, ate, and left right afterwards). Most of the customers were non East Asian (lots of south Asian and white customers). We weren’t the only East Asians though, just a couple other tables. This is very unimportant for me, but important for a few of you here, but most of the staff are also not East Asian. we did see the owner in the open concept kitchen though cooking up food.

i also did some research and found a lack of Indian Michelin star restaurants in the US, I think there are theee: Semma in NYC, Indienne in Chicago, and Rania in Washington DC. there are only a couple Southeast Asian ones I know of: Camille in Orlando and Nari in SF.

So, what are the reasons behind the overrepresentation of Japanese and Korean restaurants for Michelin stars and the underrepresentation of Chinese, south Asian, and southeast Asian cuisine? And thoughts of mostly fusion Asian cuisine being elevated to michelin star status over traditional cuisine (even if restaurants are owned and led by Asian American chefs)?

Full disclosure, I’ve had traditional style Chinese Michelin star restaurants in Asia. So, traditional Chinese restaurants CAN get Michelin stars even as fine dining. The difference from what I experienced is tea paring over wine pairing, a very formal Chinese style service, and very very fancy traditional Chinese food. otherwise similar focus on ambiance being comfortable and fancy but in the chinese sense rather than the usual western style dimmed and a bit echoey ambiance with candle lights.

Ultimately I don’t know if the situation in America is a bit of cultural issues (Chinese immigrant and Indian immigrant children not pursuing culinary careers), Americans and immigrants themselves expecting Chinese and Indian food to be cheap and for the economic masses, or the tastes, ingredients, and styles of the food aren’t considered the most top tier for western tastes since I presume Michelin reviewers in U.S. are of western cooking backgrounds compared to Michelin reviewers in china who are more likely to have chinese culinary backgrounds.

I had an interview yesterday, tomorrow is Juneteenth so it’s a holiday. how long would it take to hear back with an offer? what about a rejection?

When cultural sensitivity in healthcare goes wrong

My Chinese grandmother who lives with us has dementia and is advancing pretty fast so shes forgetting everything and how to function.

so over two years ago we this Geriatric Psychiatrist who was Chinese and she was trying to be cultural sensitive and “respect the elder” so she refused to diagnose my grandmother formally with Alzheimer’s because my grandmother refuses the diagnosis. It prevented us from getting her the treatment she needed and getting her on the waitlist to a nursing home since shes just getting worse. when my mom brought up bringing her to a nursing home, the doctor was against sending my grandmother to a nursing home saying it would go against my grandmothers cultural values even though it was increasingly debilitating having my grandmother at home where we can’t take care of her as she declines even more.

We switched her to a non Asian geriatric psychiatrist half an year later and she quickly diagnosed her with Alzheimer’s and we were finally able to get her some medical treatment and a slot on a waitlist for the nursing home.

My mom says she distrusts doctors trying to be “culturally sensitive” and would rather have doctors be direct and diagnose and give treatment even if the diagnosis is bad and they have to deliver bad news.

i get the first psychiatrist was trying to be helpful, but it wasn’t helpful at all and wasted months of time our grandmother could have been treated.

▲ 2 r/Chase

Torn between working at Chase as a relationship banker or a BofA Financial solutions advisor

Chase pros: it is a financial center location, manager seems very pleasant and really nice. cons: only series 6 and 63 and state insurance. longer path to fully licensed. I don’t want to work in retail long term

B of a pros: series 7 and 66, much higher pay, easier exit opportunities. cons: the negative reviews on Glassdoor, it’s further from where I live

my goal is to enter wealth management in the future. I already have the series 65 and 63. I really don’t want my series 65 to expire and have to take the exam all over again. once is already enough. I also have the SIE. I did this all prior to any job offer.

I’ve passed both Series 65 and 63 both first try

If you saw my post from a few weeks ago I passed the series 65. Today I passed the series 63. I used achievable for 65 and Kaplan for 63. I felt like achievable wasn’t enough for me for 65 but Kaplan was great for 63. My only regret was not choosing Kaplan on series 65 and I had to rely on a lot of intuition and logic for series 65 when I encountered unknown questions. I’m self sponsored for both but I have a finance undergrad background. Currently looking for employment in wealth management.

Fellow Americans, are you guys following the World Cup?

I’ll just admit I’m not. Im following the NBA playoffs and Stanley cup, since basketball and hockey are the two sports I follow that are in season right now. the other is football. I didn’t see any advertisement about the World Cup whatsoever on tv or on billboards even though I live very close to one of the stadiums games will be held at. the only time I see anything on mainstream discourse are people complaining about the ridiculous prices of tickets especially for resells.

So if you guys aren’t following, why? and also what are your reasons for the general lack of attention to the World Cup here in the us even though we are one of the hosts.

EDIT: by football, I meant NFL

How ready am I to pass the Series 63?

I just wrapped up using Kaplan which was my only resource and followed the entire study plan. I did 6 simulated exams which were 87.69%, 76.92%, 93.85%, 86.15%, 86.15%, and 89.23%. this was an average of 85.17%. I also had another separate additional practice exam where I got 75.83% (I had a rough day since I got unrelated bad news before taking it). my qbank average for normal q bank was 85.26%. My exam is on 5/8 and I’m considering doing one last practice exam tomorrow, although I don’t know if that is really necessary.

Why aren’t there a lot of east Asian Americans eating at Din Tai Fung in the US?

Din Tai Fung dumplings are where it’s at imo. But every U.S. location I’ve been to (Seattle, Santa Clara, LA, and NYC) are mostly non East Asian customers (~75%) every time I went. Do asian Americans just prefer other places instead? also I’ve been to multiple din tai Fung locations in Taipei.

EDIT: just to clarify I only go to din tai fung in the U.S. once or twice a year. In Taipei, I’d go like every other day if I could

Whats the best study tool for Series 63?

I am planning on starting to study for Series 63 just less than a week after passing Series 65. What are the best study tools for Series 63? I’m also annoyed Kaplan requires a shipping of a physical book though that costs like $20 extra

I just passed the Series 65 exam today!!

I used achievable as my sole study resource. I took 5 practice exams from achievable all within a 7 day period leading to the exam. My scores for my practice exams on achievable in order from earliest to most recent are 90%, 88%, 94%, 92%, 97%. My achievable readiness score was 100% after my last practice exam. I had 110 hours and 30 minutes of studying. I started studying on April 9 and my test was May 18. I did just get a bachelors degree in finance but I’m currently not employed yet post grad.

EDIT: this was my first try

Should Democrats enforcement stricter e verify laws and prosecute corporations hiring undocumented workers? Can Medicare for all be framed as a progress of national unity? Like Medicare for all but only for US citizens to enroll so it’s like a special citizen privilege? Can there be something to be learned from Democrat’s social democrats? Can we return to how Obama handled undocumented immigration in the first term? And a little more broad, how can we nation build and unify the country while keeping our civil liberties? Just to be clear, the way ICE is going around is clearly a non starter and deeply unpopular. And also trump’s showy authoritarianism is very bad.

From: my memory, a charter civilian airliner jet crashed in the east coast in the summer (I think). and most of the passengers wear military members. it was a wide body jet and I remember a woman opened her home to help the survivors after it crashed in her neighborhood. That’s all I can remember from that episode and I couldn’t find it

I’m currently getting low 90s and high 80s on my practice exams. hopefully, that’s enough to pass the actual exam. I’m using only achievable and have an educational background in finance. I’ve followed the pre set learning plan to a T
