I'm building a survival colony RPG

Hello all, I'm making a colony survival RPG game called Colony of the Forsaken.

A bit of the game backstory, I wanted to create a mix of RPG game like Diablo, survival game like Project Zomboid (even though there are no zombies :D) and colony sim like Rim World. My main focus was on trying to add multiple survivals into the game with their own spells, skills and stats, something similar to Warcraft 3 heroes and units. I also tried to mimic Warcraft 3 unit movement system (although I need to work on it a lot more). I released a demo on Itch and created a Steam page which you can check, I hope you will like the game concept! If you have any feedback I would really appreciate it since this is my first game and I would really like to get some guidance.

Thanks!

Should I quit game dev?

Hello all,

Over the past year, I've been working on a survival colony RPG game in my spare time. Last month, I created a Steam page and uploaded a demo to Itch.io.

Since then, I've honestly felt a bit discouraged. I keep seeing posts from other developers talking about hundreds or even thousands of wishlists, while my game currently sits at 43 wishlists and there are days when I get 0 wishlists.

According to Steam's data, I've had 1,314 visits to my store page (excluding bots and my own visits) and 41 wishlists (yesterday report), which works out to a 3.12% wishlist conversion rate. I've read that this isn't necessarily bad and may indicate that the Steam page is doing its job, but that I simply need more traffic.

I've been posting content on Instagram, YouTube, X, and TikTok, but I haven't had any viral success so far. My best-performing post reached around 5.8k views on Instagram, but it only resulted in 1–2 wishlists.

I also uploaded a demo to Itch.io. People are definitely trying the game, but most players drop out after the first day/night cycle. So far, only 3 players have completed the entire 40-minute demo out of 275 total players.

I'd really appreciate feedback from more experienced indie developers.

If you were in my position, what would you focus on next?

  • Keep trying to create viral content?
  • Polish the demo as much as possible to improve retention?
  • Improve the Steam page?
  • Continue development and stay the course?
  • Or move on and start a different project?

I'm genuinely unsure where my time would be best spent.

If anyone wants to take a look at the game or Steam page, I'll post the links in the comments.

Thanks!

I released a demo - Colony of the Forsaken

Playable Link (demo): https://build-and-dominate.itch.io/colony-of-the-forsaken

Description:
Colony of the Forsaken is survival colony-sim RPG game.

I was inspired by Diablo, Warcraft and Project zomboid and I wanted to merge them together so I got some kind of survival colony-sim RPG game.

I want to know whether the core loop is okay and whether should I continue building the game.
I would appreciate any feedback!

Free to play Status: Demo available for free.

My first Phaser game ever released on Steam

Hello all! In the past year I was working on a survival strategy RPG game using Phaser.

My main idea was to combine spellcasting from Warcraft with survival game aspects, the concept evolved into a survival strategy RPG where players build a colony, recruit survivors, explore a dangerous world, and fight to survive each night.

I wanted to hear your thoughts on this game and the Steam page itself, since this is the first Steam page I've ever created.

Colony of the Forsaken - Phaser survival colony demo

I’ve been working on a survival colony game in Phaser for about a year and a half, and I finally put together a playable demo on itch.io.

It’s a colony survival game where you manage villagers, gather resources, build defenses, and survive night attacks and disasters.

I’d really love to hear your thoughts and impressions - especially on performance, gameplay feel, and overall clarity.
