Orthopedic Knee Doctor Recommendation?

Does anyone have a recommendation of an orthopedic doctor in Brooklyn that looks at the knees?

Cortisone Shot Questions

I am going to see an orthopedic doctor for my arm and shoulder. I am pretty certain I have a torn rotator cuff or labral tear. If I don't, I certainly torn something on my arm.

I have a lot of weakness and numbness on my arm. I know that I will most likely have an MRI for my arm.

I read that people have to get surgery for these things. I do read that a lot of doctors do have you try other things first like PT and other things. Now if you have a torn rotator cuff or labral tear on your shoulder, then surgery is pretty much 100% recommended right?

The thing that I'm curious about is cortisone shots. I read lot of people get these but these are always for pain only? So if you have weakness or shaking or numbness, are cortisone shots ever given?

I read several people mention cortisone shots never fix an issue. Is that true or false? Is it true it's always temporary? The thing is does it ever fix any weakness or numbness or shaking? I assume it never does? I did read a few reviews from patients who saw an orthopedic doctor and said whatever issue they had, they didn't need surgery.

The thing is if the orthopedic doctor suggests cortisone shots, does everyone here do it just to see how it works? One issue with it though is you have bad side effects from it or it make your situation worse? But if it somehow fixes your issue, then it's good?

Health Insurance Vs Self Pay MRI Questions

Assuming you have essentially free health insurance that covers everything like the NY Essential Plan 1 where you only have copays and no deductibles, what happens when you see a doctor and then you are recommended to get an MRI?

  1. The doctor will write you a referral for the MRI after examining you and would most likely pick the MRI location for you correct? But you then have to confirm with billing that the place you are going to get an MRI accepts your insurance right? I know that seems to be the case for people who self pay for their ACA plan but what if it's a plan like the NY Essential Plan 1 which is essentially free except you have copay?
  2. If you are pretty certain you are going to get an MRI or multiple MRI's, can you actually ask the doctor if you can get an MRI at a certain location? Of course for you to even suggest that, you need to have done the research before that this place accepts your health insurance for MRI right? Do doctors have any issue with you choosing which MRI location you choose? As long as it's the right machine and test, that doesn't matter? Of course there is the how soon can you book an MRI. So if you find a location on your own that has good reviews and good waiting times, you can suggest some locations or is that not good? Other reason would be if a location is closer to you.
  3. I'm aware that if you self-pay for an MRI, those usually cost between $300-$650 most of the time at those lower cost self pay places. Average MRI cost I believe is probably $500 or so self pay. But if this is done in a a regular place, it will certainly be $2000 to $5000 or more right with self pay? Does anyone know if the self pay MRI locations founds on radiologyassist only take people who self pay? I had thought this was the case but then someone commented it would be pretty hard to do this as they don't think there is a large enough self pay market for them not to which sounds true. If that is the case, would that mean very few doctors schedule patients to those places even if patient health insurance covers it? So the majority of patients who do MRI's at those locations are self pay but still a decent percentage is from people with health insurance or not?
  4. Assuming it's the same MRI machine, it shouldn't matter whichever MRI location right? I do know that the radiologist results will always be slightly different with the reports.
  5. If you need to get multiple MRI's and don't want a long wait time, does it make sense to find any MRI location that does those specific tests if they have a shorter wait time? So imagine you need several MRI's and you find out that one of those self pay locations have a much shorter wait time than the better ones with better reviews, would it ever make sense to go to those self pay locations that your health insurance covers?

NY Essential Plan 1 Applied At Office - How To Check Account Information?

I recently went to a local Healthfirst/Fidelis office and signed up for the NY Essential Plan 1 at the office. I had brought in my tax return. The facilitated enroller who works at the office helped me with signing up and was entering my information on their computer screen when filing out my details. It was on the NY State of Health signup website.

The enroller did ask me a few questions like what is my estimated income for 2026 and I gave an estimate of it. I did recall there was a section where it asked me what type of income it was and there was a dropdown menu of many options and I picked one of the options. The enroller did not need my NY ID nor my passport nor even a bank account statement showing proof of my address. I brought all those with me and was told that wasn't needed.

When the enroller was done, I was shown the computer screen and it showed I was eligible for the NY Essential Plan 1. I believe it then showed that I was enrolled in it as well a bit later because it showed the date of the plan? I believe the enroller told me I'm now enrolled but just have to wait until the insurance card comes in the mail. The enroller then went and scanned my tax return and uploaded it on the website. I asked if I could get a temporary card sooner because I would like to book some appointments as soon as possible. I was told I come could back next week to the office and ask someone to print me a temporary card copy which would contain my health insurance id number. Can others here confirm this is what you do if you want the health card id sooner?

The thing that then got me confused was I recall asking if I would receive an update to my email address on this. I had given the enroller my email address and my cell number as that is needed when filling out the form online. I believe I was told you should receive an email the next day on it?

When I got home, I was a bit confused because I was wondering how would I even check my information online since I was never given a username/password for the site. I read online that if you sign up for NY Essential Plan 1 at a local office like I did, the enroller didn't create an account for you but just applied in the marketplace for you?

It seems there are 2 options and there is only one choice. You either go to that website and click on forget username and enter your name and email address and then they give you your username to log in?

Or 2nd option is you go and create a new account? I'm confused because do I already have an account or not? The thing is I contacted the enroller on this and asked and the enroller asked me if I wanted to create an account or not. I wanted to know if an account was already created for me or not. The enroller then sent me an email for it that shows

NY State Of Health -Invitation to create an account on the NY State of Health Marketplace. The email says

Dear XXX,

You have been invited by your rep to create an account on the NY State of Health, office health place. You will be required to enter an invitation code and your birth date to view or make changes to the account that your representative created. You can use the link below to create an account and use the invitation code to access your account.

https://nystateofhealthy.ny.gov/indiviudal

Invitation code: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

So this email appears to be the standard generic one everyone gets from an enroller except it shows my name and their specific invitation code. So I am I supposed to sign up for an account this way but enter that invitation code? I am very confused on this.

Now the next day, I checked my email and then got 3 emails from the NY State of Health. Is this normal especially for people who registered and got approved? Or people who registered but required to send additional information or documents?

Important Information About Your Health Plan Enrollment

A Change Was Made To Your Account

Important Notice About Your Health Plan Enrollment

To summarize quickly, each email mentioned a new notice to my account and to read the inbox. The first email said action may be required on your account. The second email said a change has been made to the account. The last email says a new notice in your account and additional information and/or action may be required on your account. In each of these emails, it does state my account ending in the last 4 digits. So that means an account has already been created and it ends in those last 4 digits and I need to click on forget username and enter my name and email and then I would get this username information? Even if I get it, I still need to click on forget password right since well I never created a password?

I was planning to go next week to that office to print out my temporary card with my healthcard id but most likely I still need to submit additional information? Do I wait till next week and go to that office and ask the enroller this?

Is An Accepted Tax Return In The System?

My accountant had e-filed my tax return and it has been accepted. I read that even if it's accepted, it's not approved, correct? It usually takes a few weeks for it to be looked at and approved?

The thing is what if you now use your tax return to apply for things that you qualify for like health insurance? Would that mean the tax return is not yet in the system for them to check then or it already is there in the system?

I read lot of people ask how soon their tax return is approved or not because they most likely have a refund but what about if you are using your recently filed and accepted tax return to apply for health insurance?

New York Essential Plan 1 Applying In Person Questions

I am going to apply for the New York Essential 1 Plan at a local Healthfirst/Fidelis office. Over a month ago, I went to one of the Healthfirst/Fidelis office carriers and asked someone who works there about applying and they told me as long as my income for 2025 was below $31,300 or so, I would be eligible for it. They did tell me I needed a 2025 tax return which I didn't file yet at the time. For 2026, my income will most likely be around the same or below the amount. I'm self employed and do not have w2's so I self report my income on my tax return. I was told when I have my 2025 tax return, I can go back and that person would help me sign up.

I recently had my 2025 tax return filed and it has been accepted. So my plan is to now print my tax return and bring it to that Healthfirst/Fidelis local office carrier and sign up.

  1. Is there an issue since even though my tax return has been filed and accepted... well it isn't processed? So wouldn't that mean my 2025 tax return isn't in the system yet for them to check which would be an issue? I believe it takes a few weeks for a tax return to be processed right? But is my 2025 tax return now in the system for them to check? If not, it would check 2024 then? I am confused because google seems to suggest you don't even need a current tax return when applying? That person at the Healthfirst/Fidelis carrier said to bring in a 2025 tax return and that is good.
  2. What exactly happens when I bring my tax return copy to that Healthfirst/Fidelis office carrier? Are they going to upload my documents on that website for me? Can't imagine they are manually entering many numbers besides the important ones? They are going to create an account for me and need my primary email right when they create an account for me? They are essentially creating an account for me like if I do it myself online or it's a bit different.
  3. Wouldn't I still need to tell them what is my expected 2026 income? I read several people say this is necessary when you apply online especially if you are self employed? That person did tell me about a month ago it wasn't necessary? But since applying for New York Essential Plan 1 is based on current income, wouldn't I need to supply that? The thing is if I have to do this, they are going to ask me when I'm sitting there while they are on the computer? I know my income should be below $31,920 for 2026 but when you give an estimate, is it like $29,000? Or is it like a range of $27,000 to $29,000? How far a range you give it? So you give an exact number but an estimated guess? If you have no w2 or anything like that, no issue? I don't want to delay it and get everything done there.
  4. Am I really going to know before I leave that office if I'm enrolled or not immediately? The person who works there told me I would know pretty much immediately which is something I never heard of. I would thought it still takes a few days to know if you are approved or not? The person who worked there I believe said you could even start booking appointments the next day once you are approved and enrolled in the same visit? That seems way too soon or is that how it works?
  5. How long does it take for you to receive the Healthfirst/Fidelis physical health insurance card in the mail? The thing is assuming it takes over a week which I assume it does, could you still book an appointment and see doctors before receiving the physical card? I read something like you visit the website and download the card or picture from your account of it to your phone or something? So you don't need the physical card?

MRI Question

If you want to get an MRI of your arm/shoulder, there are only 2 types of MRI"s you can get correct? But would this be with or without contrast?

MRI of shoulder

MRI of forearm

So if you are sure you have torn rotator cuff or labral tear or any muscle damage like bicep or tricep or anything on your arm or shoulder and have weakness or shaking on anything like that, have an MRI of your shoulder and forearm is what is needed correct? Do people typically get an MRI for their shoulder or forearm if they have clicking on their shoulder? Should right? But what if weakness or anything is felt on the upper arm? Is it still the shoulder or would that mean you need MRI of both the shoulder and forearm?

However, if you have some pain or weakness at or around your elbow area, you need an MRI for the elbow? I just read that an MRI of the forearm does not include the elbow. For people who lifted something heavy and now have cracking on their arm and cracking sound around that area, is that forearm still or it can be elbow now?

MRI's And Health Insurance Question

I am planning to apply for the New York Essential Plan 1. Then if applied and accepted, I would go and see a doctor and specialists.

I know that for you to get an MRI, the specialist has to approve of it. The thing is what if you need several MRI's for different parts of the body? Can the specialist order several of them at one time so you don't have to go and get 1 MRI done each time?

The thing is if you have New York Essential Plan 1, do they ever reject you for getting any type of MRI? I read if you have a self paying health insurance plans, some companies will deny coverage for procedures for MRI's. But what about New York Essential Plan 1? Or as long as the specialist sees that you need it, they can get one or as many as they think you need? I know that the copay for an MRI is $25 for each.

The other thing is how soon can you get an MRI? I read about places where a doctor can get you an x-ray or MRI immediately. I assume x-ray is so but MRI usually has to wait?

Has anyone here gotten say multiple MRI's in one day and has New York Essential Plan 1 and can give me their experience? Such as someone had 2 or even 3 or more MRI's in a day?

Does Clicking Of Shoulder Always Mean Torn Rotator Cuff Or Labral Tear or Other Damage?

About 7 months ago or so, I carried a small 12 pack of water with my left hand but carrying it in a very uncomfortable position. Imagine how a waiter carries a tray except they did not extend their arm when carrying it.

Then have extreme weakness on their upper left arm. Then months later noticed there is clicking on the left shoulder especially when you lift it up. Not sure if there was clicking of the left shoulder when it happened for the first few months.

About 1.5 months ago, lifted a heavy travel bag with each of the two arms at different times for quite a while as I didn't want to carry it on my left or right shoulder. Didn't want to do this on the left shoulder for my earlier issue and didn't want to on my right shoulder.

A bit later on as I got home, I notice there is like a strain on both my left and right arm. I have a lot of weakness around the left elbow and opposite the left elbow on my left arm. I notice when I turn my left arm around, there is lot of cracking sound which I did not have before all this.

I then noticed I have a similar issue on my right arm as well but there isn't that weakness feeling like on the left arm. There is a cracking sound on my right shoulder now though that was never there before this.

I am pretty certain I have either a torn rotator cuff or labral tear on my left shoulder or a type of injury to my upper left arm from what happened over 7 months ago carrying water with my left hand. This time, I'm concerned I injured my left arm since there is a ton of weakness in the middle part of my area that was never there before and the clicking of my right shoulder and some clicking sound on my right arm.

I know I have to see an orthopedic doctor for this. The thing is my left arm not only feels weak, it shakes a bit especially like if I carry anything even like a glass of water. It's like a shaking feeling when you hold something and it's happening quite a bit. Is there a term for it if it's like shaking at times?

Does anyone have advice on this? I originally had one issue but now more issues due to me carrying a heavy travel bag each with of my arms for a long distance. I like to know... does clicking of the shoulder always indicate a torn rotator cuff or labral tear or some other type of tear? As for me lifting the heavy travel bag each time with each arm, did I most likely tore a bicep or tricep? What about the cracking sound that I have now immediately after carrying the travel bag? I know the cracking sound I have on my both arms and now the clicking on my right shoulder showed up immediately after carrying the large travel bag.

Rotator Cuff Or Labral Tear And Now Another Injury?

Looking for advice here. A bit over 6 months ago I was carrying a small 12 pack of water with my left hand in a very awkward position. I was carrying it like imagine how a waiter carries a tray except I did not extend my left arm. I walked like this for 7 blocks or so and had to stop multiple times. The thing is I was carrying a grocery bag full of groceries with my right arm so that is why I did this. When I got back to my apartment, the top part of my left arm was extremely weak. I had this issue for 2 weeks or so. Then one day the weakness went away for a short time but then came back. It has been back ever since. I believe 2 to 3 months ago is when I noticed I have a clicking sound on my left shoulder. I have no idea if it was clicking for the first few months though. To me, it feels like a dead arm. It feels very weak as well. For many months I thought I pulled a muscle but thought it was a nerve issue. It wasn't until a bit later I read it's possible I torn my rotator cuff or it's a labral tear. The thing is this feeling initially was in the upper left arm and wasn't felt in the shoulder in the beginning.

I also am pretty sure I injured my both my knees during this time as well but that isn't related to this but wanted to mention this.

Now about 1.5 months ago, I was carrying luggage and walking. So imagine how someone carries a briefcase but it's very heavy. I was carrying a heavy travel bag like how you carry a briefcase and didn't want to carry it on my left shoulder. I also didn't want to carry it on my right shoulder because I didn't want to hurt my right arm/shoulder. Well later on as I got home, I i notice I have pain in both my left and my right arm. It's like the elbow and opposite elbow area. The issue is this is on both arms but this very weak feeling is very noticeable on the left middle arm.

Not only that, I notice my right shoulder clicks as well. I had no clicking on my right shoulder before this. Even when I turn my right arm around, there is clicking.

So previously my concern was I most likely got a torn rotator cuff or labral tear. Now because I was carrying something heavy with both arms and now have clicking in areas I never had clicking before this, did I injure something else? Is it possible now I have a torn rotator cuff or labral tear on my right shoulder as well? Did I tear a bicep or tricep? I am so frustrated at myself for this.

I know I have to see an orthopedic doctor soon for this. I went from having 2 knee issues and 1 arm/shoulder issue to now 2 knee issues and now 2 arm and 2 shoulder issues. The thing is when I was lifting up my heavy travel bag with each arm, I would compare it to lifting heavy weights in a way though I haven't done this ever. My big concern is I have a lot of arm weakness on my left arm throughout most of the day. Before lifting the heavy travel bag, my right arm had no issue and my left arm had weakness but it wasn't throughout the day.

How Long Does It Take For An Accepted Tax Return To Be Shown In The System?

My tax return for last year has been e-filed for 2025 by my accountant. I am currently waiting for it to be accepted.

I am going to apply for health insurance with my tax return as my income is low enough to qualify. I know that I have to print a copy of my tax return to apply for this.

However, I read that once your tax accept has been accepted, it still takes 4-5 business days until it shows up in the system. Is that true or false? Or once it's accepted, it's in the system? I was going to apply for health insurance once I get a copy of my tax return but the issue is when I apply, my tax return wouldn't be in the system yet? Does anyone know the answer or have experience with this?

How Long Does It Take For Tax Return To Be Shown On The System When Applying For New York Essential Plan 1?

I mentioned earlier that I'm planning to apply for the New York Essential Plan 1 since my income for 2025 is below the amount allowed. My issue is I didn't have my previous year's tax return as I didn't file it yet when I asked this question a while back. My tax return has been filed online but I'm still waiting for tax return copy from my accountant. I also have to wait until the return gets accepted.

My plan was once I get the tax return copies from my accountant, I would print it out and then bring it to a local health insurance office carrier to apply for it. This would be at a Healthfirst/Fidelis office where they sign people up. I had went to this office a while back and asked questions. Yes I'm aware people said you can do it online but I rather have someone help me with it at the office and they told me a while back they can do that for me as long as I bring last year's tax return.

The thing is I read that once your tax return gets filed online and accepted, it still takes 4-5 business days until the tax return shows in the system? Is that true? I thought once a tax return is accepted, it's in the system? I thought once my tax return is filed and accepted, then I bring my tax return copy pages that are necessary to that Healthfirst/Fidelis office which signs people up, then that was enough. But the issue is my tax return isn't going to be on the system until 4-5 days later which means it won't get accepted? Does anyone know about this?

The thing that has me confused is the person who works at the Healthfirst/Fidelis office a while back told me the necessary pages they needed for my 1040 tax return so I will print that out to bring to them. I did ask them if they needed me to write down my estimated 2026 income and they said it wasn't necessary. I read other people said they do? The thing is I'm self employed and do not have any w2's and things like that and the representative there told me no issue. The rep even told me that during the visit, I would know if I'm accepted or not which surprised me because I thought it still takes at least a few days?

The thing is once my tax return is accepted and I get a copy of it to print out, can I go and sign up at that local health insurance office carrier the next day? Or I have to wait longer? Because it might not see my tax return in the system yet? Then will there be a delay if they do ask you write down your estimated yearly income for 2026? Does anyone know how long this whole process will take?

Has anyone here enrolled at a local Healthfirst/Fidelis office and gave the person there their tax return and any necessary documents and once they were done, they were told on the spot... you are accepted and enrolled? Because that is what the person who works at the office told me last time when I went there and asked questions.

Tax Return Taking Longer To Be Accepted When E-Filing?

I had my taxes efiled recently by my accountant. My accountant has been e-filing my tax return for years. They would usually let me know 1 day later once my return has been accepted. It's taking a bit longer than usual now and I want to know if this is normal? I'm from New York. Is it taking longer for it to get accepted? Normally it's usually the next business day correct?

General Doctor For Doing Tests?

Does anyone have recommendation on doctor or clinic to get tests done? By tests I mean blood and urine tests done. Also to check on things like heart rate and diabetes.

I assume most doctors would send you to a testing location to get it done and then you go back to them to discuss results? Or some doctors actually do everything in their office and you go back to them days or a week later for results?

Does anyone have a doctor or location they can recommend? Would prefer anywhere in Manhattan or Brooklyn.

Orthopedic Doctor or Surgeon For Shoulder and Knee?

Does anyone have any recommendations? I find that it's hard to find a doctor online that specializes in several areas. Usually they specialize in one or two areas.
