Are Meiji era industrialist families in Japan still extremely wealthy?

Zaibatsu families like Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, Mitsui, Mori, etc. don’t appear on Forbes richest rankings, but do many still retain a sizable fraction of their massive wealth? What are they up to nowadays, and what is their life like? Do they try to gain leadership positions at their former companies? What is Japanese high society like?

In America, a few industrialist families like the Rockefellers and DuPont are still extremely wealthy (billionaire on a clan level).

Does New York help you mature faster?

I just moved to New York, and I’m starting to notice a maturity gap between me and my peers from NY. I’m originally from CA, and I grew up a bit more sheltered, so when I moved to NY, one of the first things I noticed was how people my age seem to act alot older (+5) than me (mid 20s). My coworkers mistaken me as 20 years old. They seem to have more life skills, know what they want, and hustle a lot more. Whereas, I feel like CA is slower and there’s more time for “self discovery”.

Does anyone else relate to this?

Do uber wealthy Japanese families live in luxury mansions?

Japan is known for elegance in simplicity, but I’m wondering if the uber rich live luxuriously. In the US, you can easily find celebrities and billionaires living in vast estates such as Bel Air or Beverly Hills.

Do the uber wealthy in Japan live in the same way though more privately?

How do I be an interesting and confident conversationalist/person?

I realized my problems are when I struggle to talk about a topic deeply and when I lack banter around my coworkers. My social anxiety makes me stay safe/neutral by talking about things very surface level based, having trouble talking deeply b/c of vocabulary and recall/referencing issues, and overall lacking in opinion. I want to be well liked and a social butterfly, but I end up being a people pleaser—positive, but bubbly/self deprecating person.

I often resort to “how’s your week, any plans coming up, did you see X this week” questions, and I have trouble forming comebacks to jokes/roasts, and trouble talking concisely or back and forth banter. Often I say or ask something then comment, then I respond “oh cool”. I also realize I learn a lot from others but ppl don’t rlly learn from me.

How do I be an interesting and confident conversationalist?

I realized my problems is when I struggle to talk about a topic deeply (I’m very surface level and extends to interview), talk rambling (not concise) when I noticed coworkers often cutting me off or looking away in the middle of talking, lack bantering back and forth, lacking referencing, lacking opinions or a strong belief, lacking aura and self confidence; hence, I feel like coworkers think I’m nice, friendly, approachable, but not someone who’s necessarily respected or someone they’d want to have conversations or go to a bar with.

Do you think UCLA’s rank will rise with the new Dean Garth James?

Potentially back to T15? What factors you think need to improve?

How are UCLA and Berkeley viewed in the East Coast?

Wondering if the prestige in the West Coast and International carries over to the East Coast, where it is a lot more preppy and focused on Ivies/elite LAC’s. Has perception evolved over time? Are they popular schools to apply to?

Does elitism and wealthy enclaves exist in Taiwan?

When I last visited Taiwan several years ago, all I remembered was how old every building looked. Unlike major cities like Shanghai, Seoul, Singapore, & Hong Kong, Taipei seems a lot more “egalitarian”, relaxed, and almost over-casual.

This makes me wonder if there are noticeable class or social distinctions in Taiwanese society, and whether wealthy enclaves exist in Taiwan. Is it less of a thing in Taiwan? Do ultra wealthy people like living in Taiwan?

UC STEM faculty's open letter to reinstate SAT

Over 500 STEM faculty at the University of California (UC) have signed an open letter exposing the profusion of UC undergrads unprepared for basic instruction in calculus, criticizing the waste of talent it entails, and calling on the Board of Regents to reinstate standardized testing in STEM admissions.

UC (and Cal State) are the last "SAT denier" holdouts in the country. I am glad to see some common sense returning. Notably, they addressed the open letter not only to UC officials but also to "the people of California". Apparently, they doubt this issue can be resolved internally.

Do mixed-race Asians tend to identify as “mixed race” rather than “Asian”?

This is simply an observation (I’m full Asian), but I noticed a lot of mixed race Asians tend to identify more as “mixed race” than simply “Asian”—whether if it’s due to external or internal factors.

This seems to contrast mixed Black ppl, who (also observation) seem to really wear their Black pride on their sleeve and just identify as Black. Is it cultural and identity differences? Asian Americans also don’t seem to have such Asian pride & discourse until recently.
