is this just what web development have become now?

been freelancing for about 2 years and hit this weird plateau

every project starts feeling identical... user auth, crud operations, maybe stripe integration, some file uploads

then lately every client wants "ai features" so now i'm also wiring up llm apis for chatbots or content generation

honestly the business logic changes but the actual code structure is basically copy paste at this point

started tracking my api costs across projects recently and realized i was bleeding money on markup fees from aggregator platforms... switched to something with zero fees and it made a noticeable difference

but like the bigger thing is... is this just what web dev becomes? you learn the patterns once (how frontend talks to backend, how to call third party apis, database design) and then it's just variations forever?

not complaining about the work just feels weird when clients think they're getting something custom but really 80% of the codebase could've been a template

does this change at bigger companies or is senior dev work just being really efficient at these repeating patterns

curious if anyone else hit this point or if i'm missing something

Unpopular opinion: Most devs optimize the wrong LLM metrics

7 years in tech. Hot take: EVERYONE OBSESSES OVER: Model benchmarks (useless), Token cost (vanity). WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS: Reliability/Uptime, Latency under load, Fallback speed. CMOs: Stop asking for cheaper models. Ask "are we routing smartly?" Am I crazy?

Caught an OpenAI outage 4 hours before it hit Twitter

This saved my app last month. Consumer AI tool, 5M users. 3pm: Alert flagged latency spike. 3:15pm: Automatic routing switched to Anthropic. 4pm: OpenAI goes down completely. By 7pm outage was over, but our app stayed up. Real-time routing isn't paranoia, it's insurance. The 4-hour window is everything.
