24, freshly graduated in marketing, paralyzed between the "rat race" and a Working Holiday year in Japan. Looking for perspective.
Hey everyone,
I’m 24, and I honestly feel completely stuck. I recently graduated with a double degree in Advertising, Public Relations, and Marketing Direction. On paper, it sounds great, but the reality of trying to land an entry level job right now is brutal. I’ve been applying everywhere, and I'm getting nowhere. I'm just receiving the "Unfortunately" emails all the time and it's drowning me even tho I consider myself a very strong man mentally. This is killing me, killing my joy, killing my passion for making music, killing my relationship with my family and friends...
Because of this, I’m torn between two paths, and both of them terrify me for completely different reasons:
- The "Rat Race" Path (Master’s + Job Hunt): The pressure is telling me to immediately dive into a digital traffic/marketing master's degree and force my way into the job market in Madrid(Spain). My fear here is getting sucked straight into the corporate/agency grind, burning out before I even properly start, and feeling trapped in a routine I’m not sure I want yet.
- The "Gap Year" Path (Working Holiday in Japan): I’ve been studying Japanese for the past 6 months (I'm at a basic level right now), and I’ve been seriously considering using a Working Holiday visa to move to Japan for a year. It would be an amazing chance to live abroad, clear my head, and experience something totally different. My fear here? That I’m "wasting" a year, falling behind my peers, and that it will be even harder to break into the marketing industry when I come back at 25/26.
It feels like a massive irony: I'm terrified of wasting my life away in a cubicle doing marketing campaigns I don't care about, but I'm equally terrified of throwing away my career momentum and ruining my future employability. What an ironic problem.
Has anyone been in a similar crossroads at 24? How did you deal with the fear of "falling behind" if you took time off, versus the dread of jumping straight into a saturated entry level job market? Any advice or perspective would be hugely appreciated. Thank you guys.
P.S. I’m also a musician it’s my true passion, but trying to stand out online when everyone else is doing the exact same thing is brutally hard. Because of that, I keep it as a hobby rather than treating it as a career path.
