I hate performative hatred towards Americans
Maybe this is coming from the fact my household is multi-ethnic (Dads side is Romanian/Hungarian, Moms side is Polish) yet I was born in America, and ive never really felt like I 'fit' anywhere. But I really, really despise performative hatred against Americans.
Im not saying that the 'annoying American' thing isnt real, there definitely is quite a number of American tourists that are not respectful towards other countries, it definitely exists.
But im just, so, so tired of people overperforming or just finding and nitpicking ANY excuse to hate on Americans as a whole, especially people going out of their way to dogpile on Americans online and blowing situations way out of proportions.
For example, a lot of instances I can think of (and the more stereotypical one) is some American online saying a harmless joke about another's culture or food item, or whatever really, and then someone instantly swoops in with 'well! At least our schools aren't COD lobbies!!' or something equally as disproportionate. And for what? Claiming moral superiority by shoving an ongoing, heartbreaking real issue into someones face over a mild joke??
Hell, ive even seen a video a European posted, recording themselves at a restaurant (sitting outdoors) with the caption 'Americans are so loud, gosh.', and the people talking in the background- yes, they had american accents, but they were quite literally talking at a normal conversation volume, and would be utterly indistinct if more people were in the area.
It's not just that, but theres also quite a few younger Europeans (not all) that genuinely do seem to think of *all* Americans as some lesser species.
I moved to Europe a few years ago with my parents, and I made a friend here who's made..a lot of icky comments about me being an American, like 'oh you're less fat than I imagined', 'have you been in a sh00ting before?', and other comments like, 'Youre the only American I like', as if thats supposed to be a title to carry with pride? A lot of my closest friends, some of the nicest people ive ever met, are all back in America. It's honestly disgusting to see people act like this, and it was incredibly weird to see someone IN REAL LIFE act like this.
Again, maybe im just over sensitive because ive struggled VERY hard in the past with ED and insecurity due to having unrestricted internet access from a young age and stumbling across so many people on the grand net hate what I am for an overblown stereotype. I don't know, for me it just feels like sometimes the jokes go WAY too far.
^^ Also, i'm not talking about politics here just general attitude I keep on witnessing, which largely keeps being unprovoked. Like, okay, I get it if it was provoked but in general online-interactions quite a large portion is just..eh..
Tldr; I really, really hate overblown, performative 'jokes' that are just poorly concealed xenophobia against Americans. This might be a little poorly worded as im posting this at 12AM so im quite tired, and im also sick, sorry :')
