ESFJs, I need you to explain yourselves. Is this normal ESFJ behavior?

Okay, ESFJs, I come in peace.
I’m dating/getting to know an ESFJ guy and I’m trying to figure out how much of what I’m seeing is actually “ESFJ” and how much is just… him.
First: how quickly do you guys catch feelings?!
This man has known me for a relatively short amount of time and is already saying things like I’m his main source of happiness and that I’m basically the best thing that’s happened to him this year.
He’s genuinely very sweet and caring, so I don’t think he’s being manipulative or love-bombing me. He seems to sincerely feel things very intensely. But I’m sitting here thinking:
SIR. WE JUST MET.
So ESFJs: do you tend to get emotionally attached very quickly when you really like someone? And when you say very intense romantic things early on, do you mean them literally, or is that simply how you naturally express excitement/affection?
Second: HOW DO I GET YOU TO TALK ABOUT THINGS?
He’s fantastic at talking about people, relationships, experiences, everyday life, things that happened during the day, etc. He’s also incredibly attentive — he remembers tiny details I’ve mentioned and seems genuinely interested in me.
But I’m a person who LOVES going down random intellectual rabbit holes.
Give me philosophy, psychology, evolution, religion, morality, consciousness, weird hypothetical scenarios, “what do you think about X?”, controversial ideas, etc. and I could talk for three hours.
With him, I’ll sometimes bring up something like:
“Do you think there’s an objective morality?”
And I’ll get:
“Hmm, I don’t know. What do you think?”
And then I’ll give him my argument and he’ll basically agree/disagree but doesn’t really develop his own position.
So now I’m genuinely curious:
Do ESFJs enjoy deep/intellectual conversations?
Or is “deep conversation” for you usually more like:
“Tell me about your childhood, your feelings, your relationships, what you’re going through, what happened to you…”
rather than:
“Let’s spend two hours arguing about whether free will exists.”
I’d especially love to hear from ESFJs who are dating/married to people who are very analytical or abstract.
Do you enjoy debating ideas?
Do you tend to have strong opinions about abstract subjects?
If you don’t have an opinion, do you usually just not care about the topic, or do you need time to form one?
What kinds of questions actually make you excited to talk?
Can you have extremely intellectual conversations with someone, or does that just not feel particularly rewarding?
And how do you personally distinguish “I don’t have an opinion” from “I don’t feel like discussing this”?
Basically, I’m trying to understand whether I’m accidentally expecting an ESFJ to communicate like an ENTP.
Because I really, really like how this guy treats me. He’s affectionate, attentive, emotionally open, and makes a genuine effort to understand me.
I’m just trying to figure out whether our difference in conversation style is something that can naturally complement each other… or whether I’m looking for a type of intellectual connection that simply isn’t how he connects with people.
So, ESFJs: roast me, educate me, tell me I’m completely misunderstanding you. 😂
What do you wish people understood about how you connect with someone when you REALLY like them?

What I’m I?

The strange girl loved thinking that she was different from everyone else. She was also a fervent defender of the idea that there was nothing wrong with her, that she was exactly like everyone else.
While other people simply lived naturally and effortlessly, she watched her own mind at work and spent hours taking it apart piece by piece, trying to understand every detail of how it functioned.
She tried to think about the reasons and the whys, the intentions behind simple words, the reason for love, distance, lies, or the need to be seen. But that was what everyone did, wasn’t it?
For her, things were rarely simple. She analyzed everything, dissected every detail. She hated staying on the surface and constantly thought about how to become the best version of herself. Conversations were never just conversations, feelings were never simply feelings; everything always came with a need to understand them completely.
But that was completely normal, wasn’t it?
Sometimes she liked it. She lived more deeply, and sometimes she even felt special.
But most of the time, she simply felt out of place, as if she lived on a different frequency from everyone else.
She liked so many things. Too many things, perhaps. She loved reading about different subjects, watching TV shows, cooking, writing, going to parties, visiting her family, taking care of her body, exercising, researching solutions to random problems at two in the morning.
In a single week, she could fall in love with completely different subjects, study them obsessively until she understood every detail, abandon them for a while after discovering a new interest, and then feel guilty about the dozens of unfinished things she had left behind.
But normal people had hobbies too, right?
The strange girl desperately wanted to believe that other people also acted, thought, and behaved the way she did.
Because there was something lonely about seeing the world that way.
And yet, she wasn’t unhappy.
In fact, there were days when she loved being who she was. She loved her own curiosity, the ease with which she became interested in and learned new things, the way she found beauty in details that seemed invisible to everyone else.
People seemed to like her too, especially because she could talk about almost anything and make even ordinary conversations feel deeper than they actually were.
But thinking too much comes at a price that few people notice.
While others feel, she watches herself feel. While others simply live, she is constantly aware that she is living.
Sometimes, the strange girl watches other people simply existing, talking about trivial things and complaining about mundane problems, and she feels envious.
Not of their happiness, but of their lightness.
Of the simplicity of existing without turning the mind into such a crowded place. Of the naturalness of feeling without having to think about it.
Deep down, she doesn’t want to stop seeing the depth of the world. She just wants to understand how people live without thinking so much about living.
No. Maybe it is more than that.
Maybe what she really wants is to be like the people who never had to think about any of these things.

I really like this guy, but something about this situation feels unusual. Am I overthinking it?

I (mid-20s F) recently started talking to a guy I met online. We live in different cities, and things progressed surprisingly quickly considering we hadn’t known each other for very long.
He made a significant effort to meet me in person, which I appreciated. I also made it clear from the beginning that I’m not someone who gets physical quickly. I don’t kiss or sleep with someone on a first date, and he knew that before we met. He was completely fine with it and has actually told me that he doesn’t expect anything physical from our next date either — he says he just wants to spend time together and get to know me.
So far, so good.
The first thing that made me pause was actually his manner of speaking. Before meeting him, we’d only communicated through text. When I finally heard his voice and the way he talks, I had a very strong instinctive thought that he might be gay.
I know that’s not evidence of anything. I’m not trying to stereotype him, and there really aren’t many other things I can point to. If I listed his interests, appearance, personality, etc., there isn’t some obvious collection of “gay signs.” It was just a very strong first impression.
Normally I’d completely ignore that thought. But the rest of the situation has made me wonder about him in general.
He also recently ended a very long-term relationship. They had been together for many years and were engaged at one point. From what he initially told me, the relationship had supposedly been emotionally over for quite some time and the breakup was largely a consequence of circumstances and distance.
However, later on, he gave me a somewhat different version of the story. He admitted that the breakup wasn’t really as mutual as he had initially made it sound and that he still has complicated feelings about some of the decisions that led to the relationship ending.
I’m not necessarily assuming he still wants his ex back. But it did make me wonder whether he has actually had enough time to process the end of such a long relationship.
Because here’s the other strange part:
He seems VERY interested in me.
We’ve only gone out once, but he’s already made some pretty intense statements about how much he likes me and how he doesn’t feel the need to pursue anyone else. He’s talked about us having an unusual connection and has used language that I personally find quite intense for such an early stage.
I like him too. We have a lot in common, conversation comes easily, and I genuinely enjoyed our date.
But I am much slower emotionally than he is.
I don’t think I could possibly know after one date that someone is my soulmate. I barely know this person yet.
He’s also extremely attentive. He remembers things I mention, takes an interest in the things I like, and seems to genuinely enjoy making me happy. He has gone out of his way to accommodate my preferences and has been very thoughtful.
Again, none of this is inherently bad. In fact, most of it is lovely.
It’s just… a lot.
There are also a few things he’s done that made me wonder whether he tends to become emotionally invested very quickly. For example, he’s already shown interest in becoming more involved in my life and meeting people close to me, despite us still being at a very early stage.
And that’s where my concern about his previous relationship comes in.
I’ve never been in a serious relationship myself, so I don’t have much experience figuring out whether someone is genuinely ready for something new versus unconsciously using a new relationship to fill the space left by an old one.
I also don’t know how much weight I should give my initial impression about his sexuality.
I don’t want to ask him, “Are you gay?” because that would obviously be an incredibly strange conversation based primarily on a feeling I had from hearing his voice.
At the same time, I don’t want to ignore something important just because it feels awkward to talk about.
And I don’t think asking him whether he’s over his ex would necessarily tell me much either. Most people would probably say yes, even if the reality is more complicated.
So I’m trying to figure out what I should actually look at.
For people who have been in similar situations:

  1. Are there any genuinely meaningful behavioral signs that someone might be closeted, as opposed to stereotypes that don’t actually tell you anything?
  2. How can you tell whether someone is emotionally available after leaving a very long relationship?
  3. Is intense interest very early on usually a good sign, a red flag, or simply a personality trait?
  4. What behaviors would make you think someone is moving too quickly emotionally?
  5. If you were me, would you simply slow things down and see what happens rather than trying to figure everything out right now?
I’m not looking for anyone to diagnose this guy’s sexuality or tell me what he “must” be feeling.
I’m mostly trying to understand whether I’m picking up on legitimate inconsistencies or whether I’m just inexperienced and overanalyzing a situation because everything is happening unusually fast.
