Doubt regarding modelling and model is not reflecting in fluent meshing, help in diagnosing this

Guys,

Right now I have geometry like below,

https://preview.redd.it/rk0e98eiyckh1.png?width=1377&format=png&auto=webp&s=2fb849ebec800f3f1a2f4bc65bd1f948fefb184b

The above one is fluid region modelled with pipe+screen.

https://preview.redd.it/tji1t72uyckh1.png?width=1014&format=png&auto=webp&s=55bad0664b98f09fa7138e230cda8e2556271ce4

So right from model shown first, how to start from there to get above one?

Pipe diameter is 50mm.

I tried drawing sketch of circle 56mm diameter and extruding it. And drew a circle of 700mm diameter and extruded. Then I used boolean subtract for these volumes, so that I get void between pipe and big cylinder(note this big cylinder constitutes open ambient fluid). Then I merged all bodies into one fluid body.

But I noticed that screen gaps in the side got absorbed or merged somewhere, it was not showing in meshing tab. See below,

https://preview.redd.it/0nobrebtzckh1.png?width=1393&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb5374709b85ba0db92d9846f6188fb3b4870785

In section view,

https://preview.redd.it/fk5jxzquzckh1.png?width=1428&format=png&auto=webp&s=b695a7d3a6365b94d5179909da3859ed53c703ea

But in meshing,

https://preview.redd.it/6foborrwzckh1.png?width=1912&format=png&auto=webp&s=3fdc2e2f2dc4983c08e213855195e7ca9f7531f3

See above, those small rectangle in side is filled with fluid, I dont want this. In origin wall, it is showing those small rectangle in side indicated by yellow, I dont know what has happened? But if you zoom, fluid is filled there.

https://preview.redd.it/ch61mxv00dkh1.png?width=1897&format=png&auto=webp&s=7e109dd9fc3a3eac7765490d0647d622735eb81b

Why entire fluid is getting selected. I want to select only screen faces for doing separate face sizing and wants to apply inflation on those faces.

So the major problem is in section view of design modeller, I was able to see screen gaps nicely but once I go to meshing , I cant select those screen faces only, I dont want it to be merged with wall or pipe. I dont know whether this issue has occured due to merging or some other wrong operations.

So is there any other method to do this keeping in mind to merge all bodies to have one fluid body and screen gaps should be visible nicely. Please let me know, thanks in advance.

Doubt in design modular within ansys workbench

https://preview.redd.it/2i0w758jl4kh1.png?width=1441&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d00de476c18d9603db522fb6fe930835d285b01

Previously I have modelled big cylinder at end of the pipe or screen. Now I have seen some paper where outlet is at some upstream distance from pipe end, I am doing that now. The problem I am facing is when I drew sketch as above and extrude(add frozen), cylinder is created but there are some overlapping volumes between small and big cylinder. Due to this, when I do setup, I got to know that,

https://preview.redd.it/d40bcaotl4kh1.png?width=1072&format=png&auto=webp&s=0393db163b8cb844da05432397dac18287200b08

This is how outlet should look like, you can see hole in the middle. I hope it is right. If it is right, then see what outlet it was showing for me below,

https://preview.redd.it/vinanzgxl4kh1.png?width=1078&format=png&auto=webp&s=4c265eaf20525c31e2bff3ac79b0b8d5bfbdd3bc

I hope you understood. This blue circle shouldnt come.

One more thing, when I merge these bodies to make it one body, screen gaps are not visible since it got merged into big cylinder body. I dont want this to happen, I need to see screen gaps like below,

https://preview.redd.it/hnh3drrcm4kh1.png?width=1437&format=png&auto=webp&s=b25ceacb77deea54bbf5895b6763f8c0369e7a18

Note all are fluid modelled regions, there is no solid anywhere, so gaps represents walls of distortion screen.

  1. I have tried one more thing, I have created small cylinder in that same plane and tried "Boolean subtract" and got outlet face like below,

https://preview.redd.it/kitliwmjm4kh1.png?width=1037&format=png&auto=webp&s=704e836c1b757cb4061eb46751f406e8285b266d

But I got to have 3 different bodies as shown below, and when I merge them together, then I cant find screen walls since it got merged into big cylinder volume. I need screen walls so that I can apply inflation and face sizing in that region particularly.

https://preview.redd.it/tk1wj1zqm4kh1.png?width=1195&format=png&auto=webp&s=5cb1e71f7fecad7c1b2d66ebc8dcf50cfd21eb2a

Keeping all these in mind, any other alternative or better way to model this big outer cylinder and merge. Any suggestions would help, thanks in advance.

See below single body merged together when big cylinder was drawn at end of the screen, screen gaps are visible here,

Planning a PhD abroad – questions about research and lab support

Hi everyone,

I’m currently doing my MTech at IIT in India, and I’m planning to pursue a PhD abroad. My MTech thesis is mainly computational work in fluid dynamics, but I’m interested in doing experimental research during my PhD.

Since I have very little experience with experimental work, I’m a bit worried about the transition. How much initial support can I normally expect from the supervisor and other lab members when learning experimental setups, equipment, and procedures? Could starting from scratch affect my research progress or PhD completion time?

I’d also like to know how doing a PhD abroad compares with India in terms of supervisor guidance, lab support, workload, and research environment. I’m mainly interested in research and would prefer a PhD with little or no coursework.

I haven’t decided on a country or university yet. Once I shortlist professors, is it normal to email them directly about PhD opportunities? Is it also okay to contact their current students and ask about supervisor interaction, lab support, research environment, and whether students generally graduate on time?

Finally, if I get an interview with a professor, how deeply should I prepare their research and recent papers? What should I generally be prepared to discuss in a PhD interview?

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has done or is currently doing a PhD abroad, especially in experimental fluid dynamics. I have done b.tech in mechanical engineering and doing M.Tech thermal engineering in IIT now.

Help regarding solution convergence

Hi all

I have now used fluent meshing which has organised workflow and convenient to use. Quality is much better compared to tetra, it has maximum skewness of 0.84 and minimum orthogonal quality is 0.15. See mesh below,

https://preview.redd.it/ywihz933kkjh1.png?width=935&format=png&auto=webp&s=d3804c3510cae43c19c94d10dbd27b23461b5c56

I have tried two cases

  1. Incompressible case- velocity inlet and pressure outlet

  2. Subsonic compressible case- total pressure inlet and static pressure outlet

See below, flow goes via pipe and screen is there and then it expands into ambient air. Downstream length is 15D, bigger cylinder diameter is 14D, where D is diameter of smaller pipe.

https://preview.redd.it/nqie3678kkjh1.png?width=1229&format=png&auto=webp&s=15121000fc24c33bf19edca3794e72a2487c2cb5

  1. For incompressible case with velocity inlet of 1m/s and outlet absolute pressure as 101325Pa, see residuals below,

I used coupled solver with second order upwind for all turbulence, pressure and momentum and reduced URF for pressure with 0.3 and 0.5 for momentum. Note energy equation is turned off and constant fluid properties were used. I am doing it for steady RANS simulation, k-e realizable is used.

https://preview.redd.it/kx8kaw0dmkjh1.png?width=1298&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab4522d8bdc11642f0703f11282468054a8c47e8

It was good upto 200 iterations but later it got diverged. I dont know why.

  1. For subsonic compressible case,

I used total pressure of 110250Pa and pressure at outlet is same 101325Pa. Residual are even more high here, energy equation is turned on, density is ideal gas, viscosity follows sutherland law, k-e is used. I used coupler solver here also.

https://preview.redd.it/0qrp0yjumkjh1.png?width=1148&format=png&auto=webp&s=229f003facea6dcba3719ddf3f0add743017ce15

For 2nd case, I just tried finding velocity range or statistics using cell register, it was showing literally all cells having very high unrealistic values, I dont know why it is happening. See below for example,

https://preview.redd.it/j602koe0nkjh1.png?width=653&format=png&auto=webp&s=e4306db2f1bd309c4424f360303b0a36aaccc4de

So my question what is the actual problem here?

(i) Mesh quality is good here-I used polyhexa in fluent meshing, it is much better than tetra, max skewness is 0.84 and min orthogonal quality is 0.15.

(ii) I tried reducing URF, then also it is not working.

(iii) Initially I tried with very less downstream length and radius, now I have increased that- I have referred paper for this.

What else are there to try? I cant find correct reason why solution is not converging and residuals are highly unstable. Is there anything wrong with boundary conditions and schemes. I hope there is no problem with mesh, since I have good quality mesh. It was any way diverging for both tetra also before. But current mesh quality is much better than tetra one. Thanks in advance. I hope I told all information required to diagnose this issue!

Query regarding sphere of influence and reduction of max skewness in Fluent Meshing

Hi all,

I have posted about same geometry many days before. Now I have tried fluent meshing instead of regular workbench meshing, it has much better workflow and very convenient to use. I have some doubts in that, please help me in that. See mesh settings below, I have shown complete mesh with cell count, skewness range and orthogonal quality.

https://preview.redd.it/7xstx00u6cjh1.png?width=1851&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4f75e762118607742493e013308df15d095f5a8

My doubts are:

  1. I need to know how can I reduce this max skewness?

  2. Previously, in workbench meshing, I used sphere of influence to refine the mesh near to screen in all directions. But I cant find sphere of influence here, what other alternative I have to refine the mesh near to screen.

See sphere of influence done in workbench meshing below, I want to do similar here also.

Doubt regarding wall functions

I have one small doubt

I understood that with wall functions you can use coarse mesh near wall and it uses some empirical relation to determine reasonable wall shear stress right? If you know velocity for first cell from wall from solving momentum equation, you can find friction velocity and then you can find wall shear stress. I hope calculation goes around like this?

This is the way it calculates instead of doing with velocity gradient(for this you need finer mesh). Correct me if I am wrong.

Do these wall functions applicable only for k-epsilon or for k-w models also?

They say under k-e, for standard wall functions , y+>30. But when you see those empirical relations there are some two functions defined one for y+<11.25 and y+>11.25, my simple doubt is when y+>30, definitely one function out of two will be used right, then why to define function like this? Do anytime it uses y+<11.25, is there any possibility that we model y+<11.25 even though we know y+ should be more than 30?

For enhanced wall treatment they say y+<5, then mesh would be finer near to wall right, then the purpose of using wall functions will be lost na? Please correct my understanding and thanks in advance.

.How scalable wall functions are different from enhanced wall treatment and standard wall functions?

How to figure it out which wall functions we should use depending upon flow- whether it is wall bounded flow, or free shear flow or low Re flow and for flows with strong adverse gradient?

Fluent Convergence Issues- Case Study

I am working on a simple CFD test case in ANSYS Fluent with velocity inlet of 1m/s and pressure outlet of ambient pressure. See geometry below, I tried 3 cases, I will mention along with residual plots, give me some ideas what can be done or what settings can be changed so that solution might converge?

For all three cases, I kept the physical setup the same:

  • k−ϵ turbulence model
  • Constant fluid properties
  • Energy equation OFF
  • Velocity inlet = 1 m/s
  • Pressure outlet = ambient pressure
  • Same geometry and boundary condition

I am also using a Cell Register to monitor the maximum velocity in the domain because I want to identify any unrealistic velocity spikes.

Case 1:
I used an 8.8 million cell mesh with:

  • SIMPLE
  • Green-Gauss Cell Based
  • First-order turbulent scheme, second order upwind for momentum and pressure.
  • Momentum under-relaxation factor = 0.4

https://preview.redd.it/uvg97yi51pih1.png?width=1092&format=png&auto=webp&s=968e256cecc1fcba0ef01e4de62459d886887c8c

When I checked maximum velocity in Cell register, it was showing around 150m/s, I found the location also which is there in screen face(between small and bigger cylinder- geometry will be attached down)

Case 2:

I used the same 8.8 million cell mesh, but changed the numerical settings to:

  • Coupled solver
  • Green-Gauss Node Based(this is better for unstructured mesh)
  • Second-order schemes

In this case, the maximum velocity dropped significantly to around 1.7 m/s. The residuals also look much better.

https://preview.redd.it/gvboep5k1pih1.png?width=1132&format=png&auto=webp&s=607e3df989b3ee26eec78e24348311ea418f94ac

Case 3:

I refined the mesh around the screen, increasing the mesh size from about 8.8 million to 15 million cells. I then used:

  • SIMPLE
  • Green-Gauss Node Based
  • Second-order schemes
  • Reduced under-relaxation

The maximum velocity became around 22.5 m/s, which is lower than Case 1 but still much higher than Case 2.

https://preview.redd.it/k53hspix1pih1.png?width=1464&format=png&auto=webp&s=3259fa8047a1b99ecce9eb4c7fe2805dd6d155d9

https://preview.redd.it/yuvgu0ny1pih1.png?width=1455&format=png&auto=webp&s=1abc30521e74a266d68289df88f49b3f0da29705

In all these 3 cases, mass flow is balanced. What observations we can make from these and what can be done further to make it converged??

  1. High velocity or convergence problem is due to numerical or mesh issue?

  2. I feel coupled works better ig, but it become flat very soon, it is trying to converge faster I guess as shown in 2nd case. But in 3rd case, residual are even lower compared to 2nd case, I think refining mesh also helped here. Should I try coupled solver with 15 million count mesh cell? This is the only idea I have got as of now. Which is major contributor here, change in numerical schemes or refined mesh?

  3. Actual boundary conditions are different, I am just trying this to check whether mesh could produce reliable results or not, which case out of these 3 are reliable as of now, and is it good or worth enough to run even more iterations in these 3 cases??

What would you recommend I try next to obtain a stable and physically reasonable converged solution? Any opinions would help here. Thanks in advance.

Doubt in convergence

Guys
Generally what is the acceptable value of residuals for continuity and velocities for convergence. What can be done even after 5000 iterations it is not converged but residuals are low i.e 10^-3 for continuity and 10^-6 for velocity, it is oscillating around this but not steadily converging. If mass flow between inlet and outlet is balanced, is it a good solution even though it is not converged. What other criteria is there to check??
Also, how to judge or determine that if we run for further more iterations it is more likely to converge from current situation??

Fluent residuals become unstable after 2000 iterations – high velocity spikes in a few cells

As a simple test case, I used a velocity inlet of 1 m/s and a pressure outlet. After some iterations, I noticed that the residuals became unstable. To improve the stability, I reduced the under-relaxation factor (URF) for momentum from 0.7 to 0.4 and for pressure from 0.3 to 0.2. I am using the SIMPLE scheme, with first-order discretization for the turbulence equations.

Initially, the solution behaved well up to around 2000 iterations. The continuity residual reached around 10⁻³, while the velocity residuals reached around 10⁻⁶. However, after that, the residuals started becoming unstable and increasing again.

https://preview.redd.it/3vvxf3kkazhh1.png?width=1426&format=png&auto=webp&s=5d123d8e769ade1275bd018fc0d042ccaf915a04

https://preview.redd.it/px0n8eulazhh1.png?width=1421&format=png&auto=webp&s=324768208c4b4cdadea40658e55b205ec3026f13

See below for cells with high velocity spikes,

https://preview.redd.it/hbzk971pazhh1.png?width=1564&format=png&auto=webp&s=617c4414f475c13ef1453b2dc740eecde25fc7a3

It was showing cells in outer cylinder region indicated in blue.

https://preview.redd.it/5212mo8razhh1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=2feaf5b02185063104a66985b7d6fdb26aa37664

You can see cells indicated in yellow in screen faces.

I then checked the solution to identify where the unusually high velocity values were occurring and found that the velocity spikes were concentrated in the cells shown in the attached snapshot. What should I check next? What could be causing these velocity spikes in these particular cells, and what changes should I make to the mesh or solver settings to obtain a stable and converged solution?

For outer big cylinder, I didnt use any sizing, global element size is 5mm, in screen faces face sizing with element size of 0.5mm is used, and body sizing with 0.5mm(sphere of influence) is used for refinement around the screen. Now what things to change? Mesh or solver setttings?

Solution is diverging and unstable!!

I am simulating subsonic compressible flow through a pipe and a distortion screen, followed by discharge into a still ambient environment. The computational fluid regions are shown in the attached images; the gaps between the internal fluid blocks represent the solid portions of the distortion screen. The flow passes through the pipe and screen and then expands into the larger cylindrical fluid domain. Experimentally, I know the inlet total pressure and the ambient static pressure.

https://preview.redd.it/vad115syq5hh1.png?width=1096&format=png&auto=webp&s=3d7bf4306bb8008598cedf980a9e819da9f53a1e

https://preview.redd.it/6v65yctzq5hh1.png?width=1298&format=png&auto=webp&s=b04fe1382750c627392791ddad70d7362da42aa1

I specified faces 1 and 2 to walls and kept only face 3 as a pressure outlet at ambient pressure. This case initially behaved much better and the solution appeared to converge for several hundred iterations. However, reversed flow eventually developed at the rear pressure outlet and increased significantly.
Initially it was behaving better, but later reversed flow at outlet started increasing. final residuals are approximately 10^5 for continuity and 10^7 for velocities, mass balance was not satisfied. I ran upto 2000 iterations.

Why this happens like this. See fluent console messages below(see residual values and reversed flow message),

https://preview.redd.it/8gs33b2nr5hh1.png?width=1412&format=png&auto=webp&s=04198b244b40680e40a85c591fb1ea1a3e38e4df

Regarding mesh quality, see below

https://preview.redd.it/g8ehf0nzr5hh1.png?width=1421&format=png&auto=webp&s=5a2c11514a4e079461e207fa3d3786dadb1d4e7c

Please tell me why solution is diverging or unstable, residual are high. It is allowing reverse flow at outlet also, it is okay if flow demands but why solution is unstable even though mesh quality is decent or not bad.

Help in deciding boundary conditions in Fluent

I'm simulating a subsonic compressible flow in ANSYS Fluent where air enters through a pipe with a known total pressure at the inlet, passes through a distortion screen, and then expands into an open ambient region. The large outer cylinder in my model is not a physical wall; it is only the computational domain representing the surrounding atmosphere.

I have done named selection as below,

https://preview.redd.it/cjht3uyj7lgh1.png?width=1703&format=png&auto=webp&s=867a9e697c3c4ca5171b6d2d8e167f91b3fa6815

Inlet- pressure inlet since I know total pressure

Far free stream- Pressure outlet- Ambient pressure is known obviously.

My doubt is about the upstream annular face of the outer domain (see red cylinder). Since this face also represents open ambient air and not a physical wall, should it also be assigned as a Pressure Outlet, or should it be excluded and treated differently?

When I include this annular face as a Pressure Outlet, Fluent displays arrows on that face pointing outward, which made me wonder if I have defined the boundary incorrectly. I understand this may simply indicate that backflow is allowed at a pressure outlet, but I want to confirm whether this setup is physically correct. Is this thing normal?

Whether this upstream annular face should be included in the Pressure Outlet boundary. If the answer is yes, is it normal that Fluent shows outward-pointing arrows on this face just because it is defined as a Pressure Outlet, even though physically I do not expect any reverse flow through that boundary???

Did I chose correct boundary conditions and done named selection correctly or not? If it is wrong, what changes can be done??

Doubt regarding pressure inlet boundary conditions

Guys, I recently watched Fluid mechanics 101 channel. I will attach some screenshots from that video below.

So they are telling when velocity is not known, then we can use stagnation pressure at the inlet.

But the point is still we don't know velocity right, then how can we calculate stagnation pressure. I didnt understand what they are trying to say, can anyone please help me understand how this thing works??

Another question is if we have experimental data where we know inlet mach no , can we use that to find inlet stagnation pressure and back calculate or compute inlet mach no to verify it?

But my previous questions is about when we don't know inlet mach no or velocity at all? I hope you understood my question. Explain the process please??

Need help in meshing

https://preview.redd.it/tto3enc33leh1.png?width=1332&format=png&auto=webp&s=8073d59c8f84f1fac49360c03fa6ad74e9745675

The above one is my computational domain, it consists of pipe upstream, screen(thats why you can see holes because I have modeled fluid regions) and open fluid volume. All are merged into one body.

I have used tetrahedrons method- patch conforming method, it was giving good quality mesh. The moment I introduced inflation for boundary layer, mesh quality got poor. I will attach below image, please let me know what can be done. My global element size is 3mm and I have used 20 no of divisions with growth rate 1.2.

https://preview.redd.it/bho7aopv3leh1.png?width=1918&format=png&auto=webp&s=89b56c9cae82e132ba8d395bf5ccd758fa34237d

Check generated mesh below,

https://preview.redd.it/sf9nrkpa4leh1.png?width=1432&format=png&auto=webp&s=356144e124e15fb454d3f1672c3125bf890231ef

When I looked at bad cells, most of the cells are from screen region. Please tell me how to improve mesh quality from here. See below

https://preview.redd.it/7w2mmgze4leh1.png?width=1742&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab188a64c2a0c4d56a76d8cfce21224d575653ea

Any help would be useful. I have tried both edge sizing and face sizing on screen, it is taking lot of time to mesh, way longer time, it shouldnt take much time. There is a problem but I cant identify where it is.

Mismatch between design modular and meshing tab

Hello guys,

I cant able to find why there is extra edge appearing in meshing tab shown in 1st picture, see 2nd picture of geometry in design modular, I hope you can find the difference, that extra edge is not coming in design modular, I dont know why. Can anyone help me in this please? How to get rid of this?? This is appearing only in downstream section where there is big cylindrical open fluid volume, no such edges are visible in upstream part.

Movies suggestion

Can you suggest some underrated feel good and crime thriller movies in Tamil and malaylam??

Don't suggest movies which are famous and popular, I might have watched. I recently watched pannaiyarum padminiyum, aadavan kattalai, I really feel these movies deserve more appreciation than they actually got. Tell movies which fall in this category.

Hostel Query

I will be moving from hall 14 to hall 10 soon. I have just looked around hall 10 yesterday. Obviously many of the rooms are locked. I was lucky to see one room opened, but things are scattered there, it was not at all clean including cupboards, it was dirty, there was no hanger in the room. So my doubt do the rooms here get cleaned or not?? Is these things common in all rooms?
which block or any specific room is good in hall 10, please mention that?

Also I couldn't able to find western toilets in any of the floors? Is it true? Where I can find it?

Multizone not Working!

https://preview.redd.it/yxni2n56s5dh1.png?width=1448&format=png&auto=webp&s=8ebb564223d9777138c5b891cb355d566a84c78f

I have generated mesh for above bodies. Now when I try to add outer body, multizone is getting failed. I dont know why.

https://preview.redd.it/4n31xn5bs5dh1.png?width=1420&format=png&auto=webp&s=60ca2c94211cd1c55ecc3f50fca80e7661f3f9f6

It is failing even though each face has 4 vertices, and given same edge sizing to parallel edges. One thing to note is , in the front it is having a flat face whereas in the back, it is contact with screen or any body which is decomposed into multiple bodies. Both are not identical but since in the back, I could able to generate structured mesh, if we give multizone for this body, it should be able to sweep it right? But it is not coming. I am getting below error. What this means?

https://preview.redd.it/xx3isgpos5dh1.png?width=1371&format=png&auto=webp&s=800ac8cb6f69fd3334b7d3f5251f07ab2f8828bf

Any other idea apart from dividing the faces once again exactly replicating what is there in the back? This might work, but this is exhaustive and cumbersome process. What do you think, what can be done??

https://preview.redd.it/ieluklyat5dh1.png?width=1415&format=png&auto=webp&s=67a0246e9bdf80e638cadbc11f10a1e2d67720bd

Any suggestions would help, thanks in advance.
