Help finding a vest pattern with steeking but no colorwork

I have found that I much prefer knitting in the round to flat and would like to try to knit a vest completely in the round. My understanding is that this would require steeking. On ravelry at least, almost every steeked vest is a (n absolutely beautiful) Shetland style with tons of color work which is a bit advanced for me. 😅 I was wondering if (a) there are any single color patterns you would recommend for beginners to steeking and/or (b) if I could follow one of the color work patterns but do it without the colorwork. Would that mess with the tension ?

Thanks ! ❤️❤️

How many stitches to pick up for a panel with bind off in the first row ?

Hi ! I am a relatively new knitter working on my first vest and could use some help counting stitches to pick up for a panel 😅😅

I am knitting Charissa Lam’s bottom up Arcuate Vest and have finished the left panel and am picking up stitches I moved to barber cord for the right panel. The pattern (I think she kept all her in the round work on the needles) says to pick up at the V center on a right side row and to “BO 1 stitch and continue working in pattern for 59 stitches”.

I am struggling with the right count of stitches to move off barber cord back onto my needles for this. Does the second stitch used for the bind off count towards that 59 stitches or no? In other words: Should I pick up 60 or 61 stitches off the barber cord? I was thinking it doesn’t count (pick up 61), but then the end panel doesn’t match in cable placement with the other side where as it does match with 60.

Sorry for the probably silly question. Thanks for your help!

How to knit with less pain? my tension is very tight but I meet gauge

Hello,

I am struggling with pain while knitting and I think the problem is that my tension is too tight. I meet gauge for patterns and know how to adjust if I need to but the stitches just feel tight on the needles and I literally cannot use wooden needles because the friction is too high. I am a continental knitter, but I can flick knit as well. I feel like flicking is even tighter 😅. I’ve also tried Norwegian purling and attempted Portuguese knitting but just couldn’t get it to feel comfortable. With the Norwegian purling I surprisingly found that more hard on my hands than Continental purl. Continental feels the most normal / natural to me especially coming from crochet, but I am open to other styles just haven’t found one that feels right.

Really just looking for any mechanics advice for decreasing knitting pain and/or loosening tension. I have already incorporated more breaks, rest and stretching into my practice and am working on improve my posture but it’s really the wrist pain and elbow pain that is a struggle. Idk if it matters but I mainly knit with wool and cotton.

Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated ❤️❤️❤️

Merci d’avance 🙏🙏

Does anyone else have a time eating while binding?

Title edit: a _hard_ time eating

I have noticed that while binding can reduce my dysphoria, it also makes somethings harder, notably eating. I always find myself 1) wanting to take off my bind while eating, 2) just not eating because I have it on, or 3) not enjoying my meal because I feel weird and borderline lightheaded. I have a pretty small chest and am maybe slightly underweight. Idk I did the measuring and think it’s the right size (confirmed with the company / their suggestions over email). For the first few hours it feels not so bad if I’m hydrated, but I never got that like “its just like a hug!” feeling. Does anyone else have a hard time with eating food while binding?

How do some people practice their craft for (what seems like) hours and hours everyday ?

I am in my mid twenties and I love knitting and crocheting (particularly Tunisian!! ;) ), however it can cause my wrists, hands, arms, and elbows to hurt quite a bit if I’m doing it for several hours a day for even a few days. I see so many creators showing off all their amazing makes on YouTube and here on Reddit, and I want to know the secrets to being able to create that type of volume without crippling pain!

What do you do that keeps you able to knit and crochet as much as you like? How and how long do you rest when feeling pain without loosing your crojo / groove / excitement for projects ?

Sort of free handing a balaclava and want to add knit ribbing, does anyone combine knit and Tunisian crochet and have suggestions?

I am freehanding a balaclava and have done the hood portion in Tunisian crochet. For that stretch classic with knit ribbing, I’d like to knit the front/face edge and neck portion (see yellow areas) in 1x1 or 2x2 rib. I already knit but haven’t tried putting them together.
I crocheted the hood in DK yarn with a 6mm hook. I also did a bit of swatching for the neck doing a couple of rows of Tunisian simple stitch (TSS) as a mock bit of hood and knitting off the other end of the TSS cast on. I found it to be really holey even with 4mm needles. I don’t mind if the knit portion is thinner but I would like the stitches to not seem super wide/holey or the transition really holey.

Has anyone else worked something like this? I would love any suggestions (particularly about finding the right hook/needle combination 😅)!

Thanks in advance ! :)

How easy is it to modify a pattern like with / add vertical 3x3 to 5x5 cables?

I would like to try knitting a vest m, and I was suggested this great beginner pattern. I would like to modify it by adding either 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5 cables. Is this something I can reasonably do with some math? How could I determine if this is possible / will mess up the fit / gauge / etc.? And how can I avoid messing up the gauge when making this kind of adjustment?

I have tried just looking for cabled patterns on Ravelry but everyone that fits what I’m looking for is paid, and the PayPal checkout (the only option) is not working for me.

❤️
