Two of my regular crows (Sheryl and Butthead) felt safe enough to raise a fledgling in the trees behind my building.

Yesterday he made it up to the top of the fence.

Late this afternoon I could hear crows I recognized making distress noises I didn't. When I walked out my heart sunk.

I could see a black lump. Butthead's wings were flexed over the top, and Sheryl kept pecking at it.

Little dude got hit by a car.

I couldn't let him just sit in the street and risk the crows I'd built up such a relationship risk getting hit. They were trying to protect it from getting hit again despite the fact it was clearly gone so I put on gloves and moved it to the green way next to the sidewalk.

They were obviously stressed by me picking up the body, but I swear they knew I was trying to help. They perched on the power lines above me and it was some of the angriest squawking I'd heard from them until I moved away, but they went into full attack mode on other pedestrians walking nearby.

Momma kept trying to wake her baby up for hours.

I know it's a fledgling who doesn't know how to fly. I know this is an urban area. I still don't think that's an excuse to be so unobservant that you run over an animal.

The fact some uber eats couldn't be arsed to watch what they were doing makes me sad.

Thanks for letting me vent. I need a beer and a cry.

EDIT: Also I hadn't named this little guy yet because I thought I'd have time to watch them grow and base it around their behavior. I'm accepting posthumous suggestions. I know that's weird but I'm sad and want to give them a name when I remember them.

I have no idea if it gets active usage or if someone just set it up as a novelty, but it's there. First one I've ever seen!
