Prof banned all laptops, tablets, phones, virtually any tech in lectures for an upcoming course
Hey guys,
Just got a message on Quercus, and our prof banned all tech in lectures. It was pretty funny and also surprising. He did say there is a 0 AI policy in our class, and that makes sense.
But I don't get why no tech is allowed in the lecture. I mean, some students probably cheat and use AI for assignments, and AI use in student work is prohibited 99.9% of the time. All that is justified in academia. However, I don't get how AI can be used during a lecture since the professor's reasoning for no tech in lecture is AI use...
Lack of laptops, tablets, and phones in class doesn't bother me much, but for note-taking, not having a laptop is counterintuitive. A lot of us annotate the lecture slides and take notes that way. And typing is always faster than handwritten notes.
Now, before I get comments saying handwritten notes are better for comprehension. I know, and I agree. I don't even take that many notes anyways and just listen during lectures.
UofT Law also banned laptops in some classes. Seems like drastic changes are coming to Uoft. I wouldn't be surprised if we have to submit handwritten essays in 1-2 years.
But I wanted to know your opinions.
