M4 with 24GB RAM vs. Base M5 (16GB)? 💻 First Mac Dilemma
Hey everyone!
I’m about to pull the trigger on my very first MacBook, but I’ve hit a massive fork in the road and could really use some expert eyes on this.
I’m moving over from Windows, so I’m still wrapping my head around how macOS handles resources. I've heard the "M-series efficiency" talk, but I’m not sure where the limit is.
The interesting part is my local dealer is offering both at almost the same price, so this decision got even harder 😭
Main use case will be:
- ML/AI learning projects
- Coding/dev work
- Probably some Docker, VS Code, lots of tabs, maybe light local models later on
What’s confusing me is whether I should prioritize:
- more RAM, or
- the newer M5 chip
People keep saying Apple Silicon handles memory really efficiently, so I’m wondering if 16GB is already enough and the newer processor matters more long term.
At the same time, I also see a lot of developers saying RAM becomes the bottleneck way before the CPU does.
Since this is my first Mac, I genuinely don’t know what difference I’ll actually feel in real-world usage.
Would really appreciate some real-world opinions before I pull the trigger.
