(All this is my interpretation of the song and opinion please don’t skin me alive on some Martyrs type shit)

LYRICS

We shall first examine the great lyrics of nothing special. “I think I’m gonna need a new disease. ‘Cause all the blood is bleeding out of me” I believe this is trying to imply that the singer is going through pain, most likely mentally, And an important thing I need to bring up is that jimmy funny Ms. stummy is trans, and the disease aspect is maybe representing how society, especially in the west, has garnered a hateful look or stereotype of trans people, and made multiple trans people hate themselves and or feel outcasted, feeling like they are a “disease” to the world. (or most likely I’m sorry if I offend anybody). After this we hear “thought i heard my body singing organ chords, it was just me talking to myself of course“ now tbh, I don’t really understand the first set of lyrics here, but the second set I believe is to represent someone telling hateful comments about themselves (real ong twin😭🙏) soon after, the lyrics “I think I'm gonna need a new disease
'Cause I'm already sick of selfharming” are spoken, these give the previous lyrics from before a new meaning, as the disease here is something to make the speaker find A new, more powerful stimuli to replace self harming, as the speaker has seemed to become numb to the pain (insert sad Bart Simpson also I started to copy and paste the lyrics so they look a lil weird). Then we get to the main chorus,

”You know, I know
What it's like to be alone
Punch-drunk, sick host
Crawl inside and make a home

Nothing special
Just all that it meant to be
Downward spiral
Suffocating apathy

now I personally don’t a good idea about what this seems to represent, but I can kinda get a message by the second part of the chorus, with the speaker saying “nothing special” which may mean that the speaker is nothing new, a person who provides no gain to anyone or anything, which is connected back to the speaker (potentially) hating themself. The “downward spiral” to me, seems to show the speaker is falling deeper into there self hate and or depression, with the following lyrics, “suffocating apathy“ may symbolize the speaker being consumed by this depression and becoming almost like a husk in their own body’s from their perspective.

After the chorus we hear the lyrics,

“I think I'm gonna need a new disease
'Cause I'm a mother bird regurgitating
Please, no fluffy feelings any more
'Cause it just feels even worse when I get bored”

the mother bird regurgitating may be a reference to purging, the act of forcefully throwing up to avoid calorie loss and is a common symptom in eating disorders, I sadly can’t find more meaning here, but this part is really melancholic is a sorta break from Stummy’s usually very loud instruments.

Soon after we hear,

“I think I'm gonna need a new disease
'Cause I don't know who I'm supposed to be
Hope you love the silhouette I made for you
Only had to cut my face apart to make some room”

The “ I don’t know who I’m supposed to be” may be the speaker feeling So empty emotionally, they Feel like they can’t even remember who they are, and feeling Like they have to put on a persona in public to please those around them, essentially “cutting“ there old self out (this may also be entirely wrong lol😭🙏)

We then hear Alvin and the Chipmunks getting brutally tortured which I think is really funny for some reason.

Then, we hear some crazy bars that only Shakespeare (Aka Kendrick Lamar) can rival,

“ I have enough to eat
When the bugs are crawling around me
Don't need your company
When the bugs are crawling around me“

This may be a crazy airball, but I believe this is supposed to represent an eating disorder, which has already been represented slightly earlier.

“I’ve had enough to eat” may be the speaker trying to wade people away from concern, even If they have barely ate anything, with maybe the bugs crawling around representing food, feeling like simply eating is gross, with the feeling of consuming food being the same as bugs, and the don’t need your company can represent the user pushing food away from them, getting rid of its “company”. All of this may be a reach, but I dunno.

The song concludes repeating the earlier chorus of,

”You know, I know
What it's like to be alone
Punch-drunk, sick host
Crawl inside and make a home

Nothing special
Just all that it meant to be
Downward spiral
Suffocating apathy”

CONCLUSION OF LYRICS

The lyrics of ”Nothing Special” display a lot of self hatred, showing themes of things like depression and eating disorders, but is still able to stay Somewhat catchy, which kinda reminds me of “Hey Ya’s” lyrics but to a much lesser degree. I also love just how the lyrics are able to emotionally display suffering so accurately, feeling much more authentic then most songs focusing on darker aspects, which also makes it a really comforting song strangely.

THE BEATS (aka not lyrics)

“Nothing Special” has an amazing beat, and I LOVE the guitar (I’m pretty sure it’s a guitar) in the back, it’s able to highlight the pain the lyrics brought up, with its very loud sounds that Are able to stay in the mid range of “I’m going insane” and “why do I deserve this”, helping with the melancholic tone of the song, which is able to perfectly represent something like self hate (in my own experiences). also this is more of a aspect of Stummy‘s music in general, but there are so many unique sounds and instruments that are used, which are still kinda silly sounding, but they are used in such a way to maintain the tone of the song. Anyway I don’t have much more to say, the songs background is still able to support the lyrics tones while also still providing a wonderful sound to my eardrums.

OVERALL CONCLUSION

”Nothing Special” is an amazing song that is able to display human suffering and pain, but also has A wonderful backing sound that is able to set it apart from other pieces of music, And it also just sounds good lol:)

now, I already take antidepressants for another disorder I have and my mom doesn’t know about me cutting, but I think due to this I kinda just feel empty, like i can be happy and stuff, but not sad to often and due to this I feel like I’m just Cutting myself to be different or quirky and I’m just a faker trying to be seen as different, and because of that I cut myself again because I think I’m a horrible person, then feel like a faker and its a cycle.
